Appearance: This beer pours a beautiful mahogany brown with garnet highlights. There is a slight but present fluffy white head that settles to a nice thin lacing.
Smell: This beer has a pleasant rich brown sugar sweetness that is forward on the nose followed by a mellow floral spice. I smell fresh cut grass, fresh zested oranges along with earth components like tree bark and moss. There is a definite bready, grainy malt character hiding in the background. It reminds me of fresh cooked waffles on Sunday morning.
Taste: This beer is forward with a nice chewy bread crust and cereal grain flavors. This malt is paired with a slightly fruit sweetness like fresh boiled cranberries, apricot and tart grapefruit. This is followed by a combo of peppery spice from the rye and floral, citrusy (lemon, orange) spice from traditional American hops. There is definitely a lingering bitterness, but it is not shocking to your palette or overpowering at all.
Mouthfeel: This beer has a medium body, but a wonderfully dry finish making it both bold and fantastically thirst quenching.
Drinkability: I could easily sit back and drink many of these throughout the evening either paired with food or on it's own. At 68 IBU's and 7 ABV it could definitely get me in trouble. ;)
OVERALL IMPRESSION: This beer is definitely my favorite that Two Brother's has to offer. It has a uniqueness from the Rye and Palm sugar that is showcased in the beer. It's really a unique take on an American Rye Ale by blending the peppery spicyness of Rye with the sweet citrus spice of American hops. It's a definite must try beer in my opinion.
