Dry, but with a creamy touch of Thai Palm Sugar and the spicy tang of Rye, all balanced by loads of the wackiest new Hops we could lay our hands on. Yep, it’s an Orignal. And that’s no Sin.

Best by 7/11/14 so a little past expiration, which I will take into account when scoring.

Appearance: Very dark rust color and pretty much opaque due to the darkness but red when held up to the light. Poured a one-finger off-white head that has quickly dissipated, leaving thick lacing.

Aroma: Caramelized orange, barleywine-esque. Sweet but not too sweet.

Taste: The very first thing I noticed is the incredible balance. The label states "a hopped up red rye ale" so I was expecting a lot of bitterness combined with a peppery flavor from the rye. However, the flavor, while robust, is much more restrained than the hops and rye would suggest. Cane and Ebel starts with a nice bouquet of caramel malt and a stone fruit flavor that may be a result of the addition of palm sugar. A moderate hop bitterness develops about mid-way through. The finish is quite smooth with a malt sweetness creeping in and then the peppery rye comes through in the aftertaste where it lingers. Sort of an orchestra of flavors all coming in at just the right times. 68 IBUs almost seems like an overstatement but at 7% ABV it may be that the malt is covering up a lot of the bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Just above medium in body but never too heavy. About average carbonation for the style and decently smooth. Good drinkability but unfortunately not a session option.

Final Thoughts: Really pleasantly surprised by this one. Picked it up for a buck, which was a very good deal. I'm typically not a rye beer fan but Two Brothers Brewing Co definitely knows how to work their malt bill to strike a great balance. Would I drink it again? Yes.
