Notes/Commercial Description:
Dry, but with a creamy touch of Thai Palm Sugar and the spicy tang of Rye, all balanced by loads of the wackiest new Hops we could lay our hands on. Yep, it’s an Orignal. And that’s no Sin.

The beer pours a reddish color with an off-white head. The aroma is full of rye and pine, two qualities that I think go quite well together. The flavor is more of the same, with a lot of rye and pine and not too much else. Low to medium bitterness, with a medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Fairly straightforward, but also very good.

Cane and Ebel is very, very reminiscent of Founders Red’s Rye, especially when you read the label descriptions: this one reads “a hopped up red rye ale,” while the Founders label read “hopped-up and brewed with rye.” With that kind of similarity, there’s only one thing to hope for now: taste that’s on-par with Red’s Rye.

About a month or so before the enjoy by date (“BEST BY 7/7/12”).

A: Dark and brooding, a deep red color mixed with a muddy brown. A thin head appears, so fizzy it’s nearly creamy; a sandy retention of light tan encircles the glass, leaving full chains of lacing here and there.

S: Bold, with rye everywhere…finally! I feel like the last umpteen rye beers I’ve had have been a little lax on the pumpernickel aromas, but this one is all about that dark spice. Caramel, light milk chocolate, and a sugary, honey grassiness also pop up from the rye and palm sugar – the perfect setup for the moderate-strength hop aromas of pine, juicy citrus, and cherry.

T: Now THAT is a rye palate – the spice of this red grain comes screaming up on first sip, so spiced and bready that it is, undoubtedly, the main flavor of this beer. What a superb realization of an American rye, abounding with more complex flavors of toffee, pumpernickel, toast crusts, and brown sugar; lots of bread in there. As for the hops, I’m getting a bold pine and lemon candy taste, only adding to the bitter-sweetness of the palate. Finishes with a hint of dark alcohol and grassy, natural sweetness. Very balanced, this is a rye beer that has a remarkably sweet taste to it – in the end, though, it’s balanced with a hefty amount of hops and spice.

M: Luscious is the only word I can say here. It hits all the right notes when it comes to a rye, shuffling the palate along with carbonation while remaining slick throughout. Properly chewy at times, to boot.

O: A beer that I WILL buy I again; I’m promising myself that. Today, even. Yes, it is quite sweet, and sweet is one of my least favorite qualities in a pale ale – Cane and Ebel, though, has the biggest rye bite I’ve tasted since Bear Republic’s Hop Rod Rye. And that, my friends, is something to admire.
