Relatively recently at the Coppermine Pub in North Arlington, NJ, a fellow patron walked in with this bottle. Into a tulip, it poured a cloudy reddish brown, with a very thin off-white head, poor retention and lacing, and little visible carbonation. Smelled of plum, raisin, sour cherry, and various spices. The taste certainly revealed plum, raisin, and spices, with a sour finish. Very thin, with no carbonation, yet smooth. Nothing about this beer really jumped out at me; not bad, but not great.

Not much pop when the cork is pulled. Deep clear dark garnet pour with only a few bubbles on top that becomes a ring quickly. Aromas of semi sweet caramel malts and toasty accents. Cherries and fruit with a very mild oaky backbone. Toffee flirts in as well.

First sip brings sweet malts upfront with toffee and bready notes. Fruit flavors with some cherry and grape. No real oak or tartness in the flavor at all. Tastes more like an amber to me than anything. The only differential is the fruitiness. Finishes with a mellow sweetness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and a bit slick. Mellow carbonation. Overall it was a bit hard for me to finish. A bit of a mess and not near what I want in a Flemish red.

Appearance: dark amber in color, minimal head and carbonation head, clear

Smell: granny smith apple, dark fruit, and sour mix

Taste: granny smith apple, dark fruit, and sour mix, a touch of oak towards the end

Mouthfeel: smooth, no carbonation, semi-sour

Drinkability: This is a light intro sour which I could have several of. There is a nice fruity mix with the touch of sour. I get a good sour sensation throughout, but not enough to pucker.

Poured into a Tulip Glass

Appearance - Deep burnt red brass, pours with mild carbonation accumulating a dense khaki head with mediocre retention.

Smell - Fruity like a sour green apple with a hint of banana.

Taste - The initial touch of the tongue immediately reminds me of a lambic but the finish is sweeter with more malt than tart.

Mouthfeel - mild and smooth with minimal carbonation

Drinkability - Very nice beer that would accompany many meals and snacks well without being overpowering. A nice subtle sour that keeps it from being too sweet for my tastes.

Appears a deep ruby mahogany brownish red hue with a light off white khaki head, the lacing is fine and even a magnificent peace of work. Aroma has tart cherries dark malts in the background, but it's pretty subtle not too funky in the grand scheme of sour red ales. Flavor has a rounded tart brown slash red ale the flavors are ridden of funk but lack the sour puckering mouthfeel that should come with the mouthfeel, I've loved brews from both of these brewers so that's why I've decided to pick up a bottle of their collaboration ale. I love Flemish style sour ales but this one doesn't hit the acidity. Mouthfeel is clean bodied but the overall carbonation level leaves a smooth semi sweet flavor that doesn't bring a dry mouth puckering sour ale note. Drinkability overall was fine but it didn't bring the experience that I equate to as a sour red Flemish ale, it was way too subdued but good in it's own right, if that makes sense.

A- This beer pours a deep brown body with a red hint which is clear but dense. There is a thin wisp of head that swirls around the glass and is supported by a gentle carbonation.
S- The soft hint of fruity tartness turns more cidery when warm and it is otherwise pretty clean.
T- The soft apple tartness hint has some faint malt notes underneath and is well blended with a soft brie rind to follow. There is a nice tart soft bite in the finish that grows a bit as the beer warms.
M- This beer has a medium light mouthfeel with no alcohol heat at all.
D- This beer has more apple qualities than any funk or depth of flavor or aroma.

12.7oz corked-bottle...served in a Duvel tulip

A - pours with about a half inch of frothy light tan foam...sitting atop a clear, dark ruby/brownish/purpley colored beer. very minor active bubbling. eventually settles to a thin layer of film and bubbly ring around the outside.

S - lots of minerals, grain here. only a slight twinge of cherries, vanilla, soap. just a tiny hint of sourness that mostly gets lost in everything else.

T - odd. a bit funky, not typical Belgian yeast funk but more cheese or mold like. some vanilla like sweetness, joined by a bit of cherries, vinegar. on a scale of 1-10, sour/tartness is about a 2. dominated by a bland bread malt bed. ive had this one before and can remember it being a bit better.

M - slightly creamy and medium bodied...kind of chalky. carbonation is on the lighter side.

D - not good. struggling to make it halfway through the bottle. just uninteresting, bland, and weird. hopefully my drain likes this better than i do.

A: A hazy amber body, with a thin foamy head is left. Fluffy lacing.
S: A red aroma, one of cherry and spices. A bit subtle. A Belgian from the aroma.
T/M: A nice sour on the front, finishing with a mild red, amber finish. Slight oak notes as the brew warms. A silky mouthfeel.
D: A very nice and drinkable sour, smooth on the palate and a well hidden ABV.

corked and caged green bottle, Two Brothers / Urthel collaboration

appearance: served in my hopleaf tulip, dull pink-red body, light beige ring, mostly clear

smell: you can really tell that Urthel is involved - their token yeast strains are very evident in the aroma...acidic, doughy, beets, herbal...odd stuff

taste: kind of a bad version of furthermore thermo refur...some cloying sweetness, grain, dough, beets and other misplaced vegetables, the "oak aged" effect isnt very well pronounced. overpriced for this one - not one of two brother finest moments

mouthfeel: acidic, a bit sweet

drinkability: ok

Thanks to Keith for sharing. I have to say, this is no Flanders Red Ale. It's not bad beer, but it's bad for the style. There's just a dry, slightly sour note and a sauerkraut aroma. There's a touch or caramel and cocoa notes, not very fruity. I'm not sure what's going on here, but it just comes off like a dry amber ale with a little Belgian influence.

A: Cherry red with a touch of brownish hue; a thin tan head that collects more to the side; fairly bubbly and the lacing is good

S: Tart cherries and lemon juice pervade the aromas; there is also a subtle vinegar quality that sits on top of a grainy funk

T: Not as sour/tart as I hoped; actually it has a funky-bad sour quality--like old lemon juice; all of the promising characteristics from the aroma fall flat

F: Quite thin and watery; carbonation seems off too

D: Although not what I hoped for, it still is somewhat refreshing on a hot day, but the staleness does wear on you

Bottle via trade thanks to deliriumfest.

Pours clear deep red with a small off-white head and good lacing.

Aroma is a little weak with tart cherries, grainy notes, and some oak.

Flavor is a bit weird and not very sour at all. Sweet cherries, grain, spices, oak, and some cardboardy oxidation.

Not great on the palate - fairly light and not at all acidic.

Drinkability is average. Overall, this is not awful, but it's really not to style.

Drank this camping, poured into plastic cups.

Looks teh part, reddish brown with almost no head. The aroma is cooked cherry, no characteristic funk to speak of. On teh palate a thin dry cherry, not bad, but lacking the sour funkiness expected of the style. Not bad but not very interesting. Nice try, need to refine the effort.

I'll start by saying I'm not versed in the style, but this was an enjoyable beer. I understand from other reviews this may not be a good representation of the style.

Pours a mohagany color with a one finger head despite an aggressive pour.

There's a strong malt presence in the smell that gives way to a combonation of cherry and a belgian yeast.

The taste is slightly tannic and tart, but I was expecting more of a sourness. The predominant tastes are a fruity ester of dark cherries and a yeast twang. The malt has a heafty presence, too. There's a subtle wood taste from the oak, but it's very light.

Mouthfeel is slightly acidic and well carbonated. Finish is crisp.

Good flavor and I was not picking up much alcohol. I enjoyed drinking this and found it easy to consume.

Kudos to the bros for exploring new styles and being creative. I wish I had a baseline to compare it to. I understand from others this may not be an accurate representation of a Flanders Red, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Randomly found at a store (looks like they found a lost case) and picked up only because I’d heard how bad it was. Split with my brother-in-law.

Appearance – Pours into a matching pair of tulips with a reddish brown, mahogany color. About half finger of slight white fizzy head is achieved with a moderate pour.

Smell – Literally nothing. There is almost zero aroma, and what I do get does not remind one of a flanders. Slight fruity aroma and sweet malts – that’s it.

Taste – Yikes. I went in here knowing this wasn’t the best but I was not expecting it to be this bad. Just a hint of cherry flavor, and heavy sweetness. Literally no tart or sour characteristics.

Mouthfeel – Lighter bodied, fizzy.

Overall – We drain poured this. I was at least hoping it would have been drinkable but it really was just horrible. Avoid.

Purrs into a Duvel tulip with a finger of off white latte foam. A broken skim appears on the surface after a couple minutes. First whiff from the bottle was a minerally wet stone smell, now it's just a nondescript Belgian brown ale aroma, nothing especially funky or sour about it.

Taste is estery from the yeast, some weak cherry, both hefty malt and yeast presence. Malt flavor has a bit of stale graininess to it. Watery and thin... Maybe .02% sour. It's more of a cherry Belgian Brown Ale than Flanders Red. Maybe it needs more time in the barrel...the Opus 10 was barrel-aged and one of my favorite 2 Bros. brews, but "Oak Aged Sour" on the label is misleading.

This is the biggest "unsour" sour ale letdown since Dark Kriek from New Belgium. Not worth trying again, unless they put out a truly sour batch.

tstaste - ? i guess this is a flanders red because the label says so? - but to me it tases like a light hefe with cherries???

mouthfeel is thin watery - the cabonation was right though

drinikability is low - price is too high and the flavor sucks

this beer = epic fail

12.7 corked bottle poured into a Unibroue Tulip. No date or info to be seen.

A - This clear ruby brown ale poured moderately only produced a one-finger head. Creamy and pale tan, it had so-so retention but left a thin layer throughout and small spots of lacing.

S - An acidic and sour yeasty aroma pours out with lots of nuances to be discovered. A very fruity background slight off-sets the sour aroma. Pale malts and light wheat in the grist. Plum and light peach with a dark cherry are muted coming out more after some agitation. Light woody and earth tones with a bit of dry straw and horseblanket.

T - On a deep first gulp it brought instant acidity and sourness to the table but it's complexities run much deeper. Dark cherries and plums, like the aroma, are there with a yeasty lightly buttery, dough malt backbone. It's not as sour as I was expecting for my first Flanders but it's definitely different. Based on style guidelines, it's incredibly solid.

M - Creamy as churned butter and smooth as velvet, this beer goes down very nicely and does a nice throat-coating. The acidity gives it a sour finish.

D - If you can get passed the light sour flavor (which isn't bad at all) it's a very good and drinkable beer with great complexities woven in the background. Great collaboration brew!

Saw this one meandering around in my fridge and wanted to try something a but different last night so grabbed it out. Corked and caged 375 were served chilled in an oversized wine glass, consumed on 12/09/2009.
The pour was nice, rich dark brown and reddish in color with a decent head of brown on top that settled in very nicely, but did not leave much in the way of side lacing. Aroma showed no signs of sourness at all. Lots of maple sugar like aromas mixed with hints of prunes and a touch of grape skin as it warms, but where is the sour? As I take the first sip I am left confused by the style here. It is a wonderful brown ale, nice sweetness and a good use of dark fruit flavor here, and the grapes are coming in nicely now, but I just don't see it. Its missing a punch or a kick to it. Subtle, dry finish with a nice melding of flavors that leaves a bit of a sweet touch on the back of the tongue, but nothing else really exciting. Smooth, and easily session able, but just a miss for the style.

Overall I really liked this, but I am not sure on the labeling though. It was a quality offering, but at times I am just unsure of where it was supposed to go.

A: The beer is very cloudy red in color and has some yeast particles floating near the bottom of the glass. It poured with a finger high off white head that has excellent retention properties and left a thick head covering the surface and thick lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are light to moderately strong aromas of sour cherries in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has sour flavors of cherries along with notes of oak. The sourness is not very strong.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a bit acidic on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is not as sour and acidic compared to other beers in the style and could make for a nice selection on a summer day.

A - Pours a hazy rusty brown body with a thin layer of off-white head that quickly recedes to the edges.

S - Oaky vanilla, cherry, brown sugar, musty wild-yeast funk, apple cider vinegar, musky sweat, and old leather. Pleasant, dirty, and dark. Develops a spicy profile as it warms.

T - The attack is well-balanced between tart and sweet, but the finish has a clumsy, lingering sweetness. The oak flavors are subtle but pleasing - vanilla, cherry, and caramelized sugar all make their quiet presence felt.

M - I know that Flanders reds generally don't have effervescent carbonation, but this could use a slight increase in its carbonation - as it is, the brew feels sticky and cloying, and could use some carbonation to lift this feeling off of the palate.

D - Fans of Flanders red ales might not find anything terrifically exciting here, but still a very respectable and drinkable brew. I'd pair this brew with a hunk of Stichelton to help bring out some of the musty and spicy flavors in the brew.

Poured into a St. Louis Gueuze glass.

Pours a deep garnet red with a two fingered white head that drops very quickly, leaving a wisp of foam and some light lacing.

Aromas of dark cherries, some lactic sourness. But any aroma is very faint.

Flavors of dark cherries, watered down, some lactic sourness. This is a flanders red that has been diluted down about three or four times. Not much flavor to stand out. Finish is short and unremarkable.

Mouthfeel is light, watery, some sour puckering.

Overall, this is a disappointment. The Ebel brothers got their sour training wheels on this beer. Let's all forget it and move on. I think I'll try Askew next.

Poured from a cork and caged bottle into a Chimay goblet.

Appearance: Pours a clear dark red/amber color with a layer of off white head. Some lacing remains after the pour.

Smell: There is a sour note in the smell, but I'm picking up more sweet fruit. It kind of smells like mildly sour apple juice.

Taste: This beer is hardly sour at all. There is a very mild acidic taste, but it is not the dominant taste. There is some sweet dark fruit, think brown sugar, cherries, and raisins. I pick up some oak as well. Overall I think the taste is watery and not nearly sour enough.

Mouthfeel: The body is a bit think and although it feels like this beer wants to have a dry finish, it never gets there. It could use some more carbonation as well.

Drinkability: This beer is too watery and not very sour at all. I definitely won't be going back for another bottle.

A-Dark ruby. Big tan head. Fairly clear

S-Metalic. Wet Hay. No hops. Medicinal. Some toast.

T-Toasty malts. Munichy. Saccarine sweet. Not at all sour. Not even like an oud bruin with sweet sour. Just nothing. Maybe a little skittle flavor from some lacto but not much.

M- Medium bodied. A little tanic but ok. Medium carbonation.

D-While I wouldn't call this beer awful, it definetly isn't a (according to the label) oak-aged sour flemish style red ale. The fake sweetness/wortiness is already getting on my nerves (4 sips in).

Shame, I love most 2 brothers and urthel beers.

Appears a murky, dark brown with a red hue. Spotty bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell...meh. Kind of bland stuff, here. No funk detected. Very mild traces of steeped grain, and a touch of fruit if anything.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas. Perhaps some very, very mild cherry detected in the flavor but not what I was expecting when manning up the $10 for this brew.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with some light fruitiness lingering. As a hge fan of this style, I am sad to report that I was let down. It didn't even really scratch the surface of funkiness that is expected with some of the bigger boys from this genre, ala Rodenbach. It's ok for a beer but not on par with anything spectacular. If there are any left, do yourself a favor...uncork it, give a pinch of sugar in there, add lactobaccilus, and brett lambicus, re-cap, age. Hopefully, you'll have a genuine Flemish Red in about a year.
