Moaten is a disappointing Flemish Red ale from Two Brothers and Urthel. The ale features very, very little of the cherry or raspberry fruitiness that one would expect from the style, and virtually no tartness. Instead, it features a fairly uninspired brown malt base with little else to note. Compared to an ale like Duchesse De Bourgogne or Cuvee Des Jacobins Rouge, this is a fairly poor representation of the style.
Pours a 1cm head of off-white bubbles, ranging in size from small to large, with a chunky appearance. Foam retention is about average, descending over a minute to a thick ring around the glass with some sparse islands of foam atop the body. Lacing exists, and is prominent, leaving all manner of streaks and dots on the sides of the glass. Body is a rather dark brown for the style with few hints of red. Beer is also transparent, with light bringing out reddish hues and making some modest carbonation visible.
Aroma is of minerals in water, modest raspberry esters, tomato juice, and some brown malt base. The minerals and tomato stand out the most, with raspberry esters needing to be searched for. There is no detectable tartness. Rather disappointed, and the vague tomato aroma is off-putting.
Opens with bland, brown malt base alongside some very subdued raspberry esters and very, very slight tartness. Mid-palate is largely consumed by the soggy brown malt base and slight tomato juice, with little increase in the fruit esters or tartness to perk it up. Back of palate notes slight oak character and some continued mild tartness, with modest cocoa and raspberry flavors as well. Aftertaste is of brown malt sweetness, slight fruit esters and subtle tartness.
The beer's body is medium to medium-light in weight, with very low levels of carbonation. Even with this lighter body, the beer feels smooth, sluggish, and uninspired across the palate. Minimal tartness contributes to a boring experience. Closes out dry and slightly sticky across the palate.

Sampling this brew at home at cellar temp poured into a snifter. The beer pours a clear chestnut with bright ruby highlights, or maybe flipped with a bright ruby and chestnut highlights? its not just red.
I get a fizzy 1cm off white head that fades rapidly to nothing. Aroma is some acidic sour cherry and a bit of biscuity malt. Not too complex and not quite as strong as I anticipated.
First sip reveals a crisp texture with fine fizzy carbonation and an average to light body.
Flavor is tart cherries with some acidic notes and not a lot of anything else. I get a little bit of sugary fruit notes as the beer warms up a little, but this is certainly not as tart or interesting as anticipated.
The beer is easy to drink but not very interesting, could be a portal ? intro beer to the style, but it is a little lacking as a solid example of the style.
Im left with an empty bottle and a sense of disappointment.

A: Pours a cloudy garnet red with two fingers of bright white foamy head. Moderate head retention and moderate lacing.
S: Aromas are of sour cherry though far more intense than the flavor.
T: Flavors are light sour cherry with hints of oak. I prefer a little more sourness and funkiness in this style so I felt this was a little light on flavor. Overall a very well balanced taste.
M: Light to medium bodied with heavy carbonation and a dry finish.
O: Could be a very refreshing beer in the summer... It would pair very nicely with some freshly grilled meats as it would cut through the fattiness. Easy to drink.

A: The beer is very cloudy red in color and has some yeast particles floating near the bottom of the glass. It poured with a finger high off white head that has excellent retention properties and left a thick head covering the surface and thick lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are light to moderately strong aromas of sour cherries in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has sour flavors of cherries along with notes of oak. The sourness is not very strong.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a bit acidic on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is not as sour and acidic compared to other beers in the style and could make for a nice selection on a summer day.
