's Bier of the Day: Two Brothers "Pāhoehoe" Coconut Ale: Pours a HUGE, dense, white head. Soft malt aroma, and if I work at it, I can find a hint of coconut. Once the head subsides, the coconut aroma becomes noticeable. Golden. Taste is slightly bitter and a touch of sweet. Moves into a low hop bitterness, flashes metallic, then is just malt. After a minute or so, I get a spectre of coconut. Very little coconut present.
This tastes mostly just like an all-malt lager, actually. The coconut is VERY subtle, and even though this is only 16 IBU's, the hops still drown out the coconut.

This beer, an interesting enough concept given that most breweries would tend toward using a maltier, more robust porter or stout as the base for a coconut beer and this one goes in the opposite direction, is in fact a mildly hazy medium yellow-gold color. It forms a small white head with decent retention and enough spotty lacing to show some depth.
There's a good coconut presence, albeit somewhat raw in an otherwise light beer that also offers a touch of grains. The rawness of the coconut is countered by a sweet lactic note. Malts are also a little biscuit-like underneath. The grains come off more wheat-like as it goes and adds to a toastiness in the overall profile.
The coconut taste makes more sense when I notice that, along with flesh, coconut milk/coconut water were main ingredients. I get much more of that, noticeably so, in the flavor. It also gets a little tangy as fruity notes mingle.
The body feels very light, but here's where it makes sense for the brewers not to include too much flesh and to incorporate the liquid essence of coconut; it works in this beer. Granted, I'd like a bit more to it, possibly a smoother flow underneath the carbonation and crispness, but it's not bad.

A pale gold color that's clear. Average stark white head.
Smells like coconut milk and sweet malt.
The cocnut is there, but not overwhelming. It does taste like fresh coconut milk right out of the nut.
Mouthfeel is light and clean.
It a decent beer, but nothing about it is well pronounced. Despite the novel approach with coconut it's still pretty accessible to those that aren't deep into craft beer.

Had on tap at Two Brothers and whoa, this is a different one. A light body, somewhere between tannish yellow to light brown with a white two finger head. It smells of coconut right away, which is a good thing to me considering my love of the fruit. As for the taste, it was very smooth and mellow, an upfront coconut flavor hits with almost no hop bitterness save for an extremely light hint at the finish. The more I drank it the more it started tasting like sun tan lotion and then back to coconut and then back to sun tan lotion.
It's hard to say if I truly enjoyed it but it's innovation and changing flavor has brought me back to it a few times now.

Recently had a pint of this on tap, and it was probably among the least memorable Two Brothers beers of all time.
Bright gold color with streams of carbonation visible, a thin feeble cap of foam that broke apart after the first sip or two. A thin ring of foam remained and some random flecks of lace on one side of the glass.
Aroma was mild and nondescript, more of a funky lager-like yeast with basic grains than anything. No coconut toastiness or sweetness whatsoever in the nose.
Tastes like a bland base beer, again with no coconut toastiness or sweetness whatsoever. A big disappointment. Minor graininess and a yeast strain that overshadowed it. Kind of limp feeling on the palate. Tried to pawn off the last half of the pint before we left the bar, and it was chugged to get rid of it. Definitely skipped buying a bottle to compare, waste of money unfortunately. Toasted coconut can be a great addition to the right beer (see Three Hour Tour) but with this batch it just seemed like a poor attempt all around.

Served in a pint glass at Two Brothers Taphouse 2/17/11.
A: Served a bright, glowing, straw-gold color with a puffly little plop of bright white head on top. Retention was good and some random specks of lace were left behind.
S: Smells of fresh toasted coconut. Some sweet navel orange and/or tangerines and puffed rice, as well.
T: See above. The coconut is obviously the main thing going on here but at no time does it come off as phony or overbearing. Very high quality coconut was used as this does not taste like they dumped a bunch of Torani coconut syrup into the beer.
M: Mild sweetness that compliments the toasty dryness. Finish is rather short.
D: Not sure if I'd want a growler of this, but this one pint was the perfect serving size and quite refreshing.

Served in a tall pokal at The Firkin.
From the notes on the Firk's menu, this thing was brewed with toasted coconut and coconut water, then was "dry coconut-ed". Wow. Plenty o' coconut, right? It pours a clear pale-ish straw topped by a finger of cream-white froth. The nose comprises cream soda, vanilla, coconut (no way!), and wheat. The taste holds notes of coconut, papaya, mandarin oranges, wheat, rice, pineapple, and white grapes. The toasted coconut comes in in the middle and lingers 'til the end. The coconut is palpable. Trust me. The body straddles the line between heavy-leaning light and rather light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a decidedly interesting brew, a bit heavy on the coconut for my preferences, but it somehow holds itself back from going completely overboard.

Imbibed at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL on 03/11/2011.
Note: Listed on the menu as a golden ale.
Appearance -- Pours a bright golden hue with a finger width of creamy lily-white head. Very photogenic.
Smell -- Husky grain, coconut water, macaroons, spring flowers and prairie grass. Overall: definitely coconut-infused, slightly sweet, mildly reminiscent of tanning lotion.
Taste -- Quite sweet up front with coconut water and macaroons. Floral hops don't lend much in balancing hop bitterness, but the aromatic flavors do compliment the coconut. Husky grain character is perceptible mid-palate. Mild grassy bitterness toward finish. Lingering flavor of, you guessed it, coconut.
Mouthfeel -- medium-bodied with low, creamy carbonation. Feels a little syrupy.
Drinkability -- Interesting, but weird. Definitely on the sweet side with all of that coconut water. Over time the beer becomes cloying and a bit too reminiscent of suntan lotion. At least it wasn't boring.

Poured from a bomber into a half-pint chalice.
A: Slightly hazy, pale golden color with less than one finger of diminishing white foam head. Scant lacing remains on the glass.
S: Slightly fruity; grain is represented by a fair amount of cracker and untoasted bread. The quality of coconut is present, but comes across as very young and green.
T: Begins off-dry, with chewy--even pasty--light malt that shows an early burst of restrained lychee fruit. The green coconut from the smell reveals itself here toward the middle. Bitterness is mild but sharp amidst a whiff of honey in the finish. The coconut quality has an additive effect on the palate over time.
M: Medium viscosity, somewhat wet on the palate yet also syrupy, with moderate carbonation.
D/O: This beer exhibits one of the more subtle applications of coconut yet encountered--but is totally honest in the final tally. It is a unique and experimental beer, but not in an attention-getting, headline-grabbing sort of way.
