This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

This black beer is a Bohemian Pilsner gone dark. German malts, noble hops, and lager yeast combine for our take on this traditional beer style. 28.1 IBU

Served cold at 45º into a large tapered mug.

Frothy, creamy tan cap of foam, with sticky coating lace in the glass. A drippy crown encircles the inside rim. Black body with some copper ruby highlights in direct light.

Soft roasty aroma, light and muted, fairly dry. Some yeast there, but no detectable hop presence. The light roast takes on a bit of coffee character as it warms.

Earthy roast, dry bittersweet bakers chocolate, minor dried plum, again dry not sweet. Lingering mild earthy bitterness, nothing harsh, well integrated. Pleasant and easygoing, understated and not extreme in the least. No problem finishing the bomber. Would be a great option to contrast with heartier food. Hope to see this around town on draft... there just aren't enough Schwarzbiers out there.

A unique and worthy interpretation of a Schwarzbier style, which I love. Malty upfront, then delightfully dry with a crisp hop bitterness in the finish. There is a roasted coffee quality, but it's restrained and smoothed out...this is a lager, after all. Highly recommended.

A schwarzbier from my own state? Happy to see it on principle. Had at Binny's south Loop.

A // Lives up to that Schwarz (black) in the style name. Nice and very dark with good clarity and a bubbly lager sort of head which is off-white to light tan.

S // I smell hops a lot more than I should in this. Low hop aroma is a great kick, but the hops in this smell a bit too pronounced, and possibly the wrong sort. But it does have both a nice roastiness and a nice sweetness in there.

T // There's some sweetness in here, fairly caramel by nature, and the experience is augmented by a roasted character. Again the hops are a little much, and I think this beer would be better with less, but on the palate I taste it less than I'd smelled it. The roast and toasted tastes both do a lot for this beer, and its (fairly) clean finish.

M // This is where it loses me. This is heavier than I want a black lager, and it doesn't feel nearly as clean and light as I would like. By the end of the glass, it feels medium-heavy. Which loses some drinkability.

I enjoyed my glass, but next to another Schwarz, specifically the German-made ones, it doesn't hold up all so well.

Was able to try this at the release party last night as well. Good food, good people and a nice little documentary too...

A - a nice roasty darkness with a light layer of brown foam ringing around the plastic cup it was served in...

S - Some roasted malts, a hint of smokiness going on...nothing too over powering..

T - Pleasent..Malty, a touch sweet with a dash of smoke swirled in... went well with the dumplins' being served...

M - soft, creamy... a nice velvet touch..

O - not bad... draft only for now, with a limited set of bottles coming out soon I believe.. Be an interesting pick up..

Served on-tap at the release party at the brewery. Nearly black with garnet highlights, topped with a caramel-colored head that fades to a thin but persistent ring. Aroma is finely balanced between the roast grain and rich toasted malt. Hops do not make an appearance yet.

Flavor is first dominated by the substantial, but not overpowering, roasted malt, perhaps a bit more than a classic German rendition, but not trespassing into acridity or harshness. The flavor transitions into a slightly sweet malt body, once again pushing the envelope of the classic schwarzbier, but staying within the bounds and striking a nice balance with more prominent roast flavors. Hop bitterness is detectable but not not a primary flavor. The body of this beer is a little on the heavy side for the style, though expected from the degree of malt presence. A malt body like this also is pretty much a trademark feature for Two Brothers.

All in all a high quality and interesting rendition of a too-infrequently brewed style in the repertoire of most craft breweries. Worth seeking out.
