12.7 fl oz bottle poured into a Founders snifter.

Appearance: pours a hazy copper color with a thin white head.

Smell: very pungent acidity, bready malt undertones

Taste: acidity is much more restrained than expected. Very balanced, apple cider with a clean light malt profile with a hint of caramel malt with a very clean acidity on the finish. Mellow, clean flavor. If you noticed, I used the word clean 3 times. Very clean.

Mouthfeel: crisp, and...clean. Low carbonation gives it a very smooth feel.

Overall: extremely drinkable, refreshing.

Received 3x years ago (almost to the day) from Benpopper in a fantastic trade... Thanks Ben. Shared tonight with COOPMatt and Buckeyeboy. Pours a slightly hazed orange with a short-lived white head... still provides decent lacing.

Nose is big juicy and sour... a tiny bit acetic, but not bad given the age and the time spent in foudre... a bit of red wine and the brett really opened up on a later pour.

Flavor is sour, but not face-melting... surprisingly balanced... something that I associate with tannic pie cherries.. a touch acetic on the back-end and perhaps something that I associate with acetone, but I think Matt poisoned my well with that.

Nice body and carbonation... has held up surprisingly well... Thanks again Ben, we should hook up again some time.

Poured a clean orange/amber with a thick and creamy long lasting tan head, good carbonation running throughout the beer for a good long while.

The nose is very tart and a bit cidery, lightly sweet with some touches of tropical fruit mixing in with the funky bretty charachter.

The flavor is mildy sweet with a bit of apple and pear and a touch of white cheese, finishes with a dry tart funky basement quality, has just a bit of sourness at the very end.

The mouthfeel is creamy with a dry finish.

Very nice wild ale, nice combination of fruit notes and sour qualities.

Two Brothers Askew. No bottle dating. Acquired in the summer of 2012. 12.7oz bottle split into Duchesse de Bourgogne goblets.

Pours a lovely color. It's like a sepiated rose or a pinkish cider. Some yeasty haze found its way into the beer at the end of my pour, but most was choked back. Hardly any head formed, and nothing but a very thin ring remains. This beer is simply pretty.

Super sour nose for a Flanders-style wild ale. Big imploding funk-rot from the combination of Saccharo- and Brettanomyces. Brightly woody. Sour fruit aromas include strawberry and apple. Maybe a bit of raspberry.

Big smack of fruit sour with a yield of green strawberry, unripe raspberry, and tart apple. Woody, vinegary, and decently funky. Tastes like a soured and unsweetened currant jam. I love the berry notes. This is a well-defined sour, if I may say so.

There is a hot sour burn in the throat that is an aspect to struggle through, drinkibility-wise. Otherwise, the body is pretty average for the style. Carbonation is medium.

Askew is a bright and wonderful sour ale. My girlfriend really took to it, as well. Time to seek out another bottle. Recommended.

Pours surprisingly clear and orange, with a very small head. Smells like a pleasantly aged blend of oak, sour yeast, and fruit. Nothing too horribly complex or astounding, but a nice, solid blend.

Tastes about how it smells. Good fruit complexities balanced out well by the yeast--not punishingly sour, but still not so dulled that it seems like a cop out. There's a very nicely dulled, almost chocolately end to the sour, and this falls in to a really nice, yeasty finish.

Imma fucking with the rating system here, because this isn't quite as good as a 4.5 flavor so I'm saying it's 4.5 overall. Not quite, but still good.

Served in a snifter, beer is amber and clear with a lazy head of small bubbles, some lacing, low retention though.

Aroma is lactic and bright, succinic acid maybe.

Beer is flavorful with a nice finish, light and effervescent on the palate, a good finish. Overall I did enjoy this beer and I'd have it again.

(Aged for 1+ year)

Dark amber, nearly ruby, with an off-white ring of foam atop, eventually leaving irregular lines of stick down the glass.

An enjoyable, complex, evolving aroma: vinous red wine notes, lots of oak, some vinegar, and a bit of berry character as well. The funky Brett yeast makes itself more and more present as the beer warms.

The flavor follows the aroma, with vinous notes, lots of oak, some vinegar, and berry character shining through, along with a very mild funky barnyaryd yeast character.

Medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation.

Very enjoyable sour.

Rich coppery amber color with impressive creamy and tightly-knit head. It has uncharacteristic lasting power for a sour and stands strong until the last sip. Aroma is funk-forward with a hint of sweetness, tart cherry, Tylenol chewables (in a good way), and a complex layer of all kinds of fruit. Smells like a cross between a gueuze and a Flanders red.

Much of the same on the palate, but lacks the complexity of the nose. Well-balanced tartness that's in the middle of the range. Some vanilla pops up as it warms.

Carbonation is medium. The body is pushed to the lower end of medium by some lingering acidity that coats the mouth on the finish. On the whole, this is an excellent offering from Two Brothers, maybe the best beer I've had from them.

Pours dark orange with a small white creamy head. Decent retention and lacing.

Lots of lemon and a bit of cherry in the nose. Heavy funk with a little horse blanket.

Some apple and lemon up front. A little bit of cherry and a ton of bretty funk. Sourness grips the back of the tongue and finishes oaky and dry.

Medium to light bodied with good carbonation.

A pleasant American sour. I like dry oaky sours and this one fits the bill. I can feel the enamel ripping off my teeth, but it doesn't taste over vinegary. Glad we have a midwest brewery doing good sours.

Shared by aasher. 375ml poured into a Hill Farmstead tulip.

A - Bright orange with a nice white and bubbly head, turning slowly into lacing.

S - Funky lemongrass, notes of brett and vinegar. What I would describe as vinegar reminds me of some very sour cherries as well. In your face.

T - Light vinegar, tart lemon, light notes of cherries. The sour notes stick around a bit; I can feel it eating away after each sip.

M - Lighter to medium, carbonation level is medium. Nice.

O - This beer seems underrated. Pretty good overall, I could drink this regularly.

375 ml bottle into tulip, no bottle date, but picked this up when it was released in 2011. Pours slightly hazy pale orange color with a nice 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention that reduces to a thin cap. Spotty lacing on the glass, and a good amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of big tart apple, cherry, cider vinegar, spiciness, hay, grape, lemon, oak, and funk. Very nice aromas with great balance of everything. Nothing is too overpowering. Taste of big tart apple, cherry, grape, lemon, pear, spiciness, grass, earthiness, light vinegar, and oak. Nice tart and sour finish; with some lingering notes of apple, grape, vinegar, spiciness, and earthiness. Very nice balance of sweetness with the acidity. Medium carbonation and body; with a nice crisp and acidic mouthfeel. No alcohol noticed at all as expected from the style. Overall this is an outstanding and well balanced American wild ale. Very complex and smooth drinking despite the acidity.

Review from Blind BIF 6, bottle # 5 Cork and Caged 500ml Poured into my Half Acre Tulip
Ive had the cage off for about 10 minutes while finishing up an email and cork has nearly worked its way out. Fantastic "POP" as the cork relieves itself of it's duties.

A Pours a slightly straw but burnt orange color. About a finger and half of a creamy white head, not quite the brilliant head your find with Brett but close, it could be the light. The head has receded back to about a finger of fizzy foam. No noted dregs. As i swirl this gorgeous liquid, the head instantly reappears and then receded back to about a finger. Plenty of little effervescent bubbles coming from the bottom of this one. 4.5

S I am immediately aware this is either a Gueuze or Lambic. The stable "acidic" smells associated with a sour are screaming at my nose. The smell of soured grapes, funk, wine & musk are all present. 4.5

T Fantastic! The flavor lends to quite a bit to the nose and I convinced this is a Gueuze or unblended Lambic. Wine barrel, brett, lactic acid, pedio funk, lemons, soured cherries, oranges and a bit of leather. At the end, just after the sour begins to fade I pick up more plum and a bit of apple. 5

M This is exactly how this beer should be and the effervescent bubbles dance on the tongue making my mouth happy. light, crisp and creamy all at the same time. 5

O I love this beer. This is something i would normally take to a tasting to share with friends and only get a couple ounces of. Having a full glass is great! Time to find out what it is i'm about to propose to. 4.75 should be an option

Big thanks goes out to my boy aasher for giving me this one a semi-recent MASSIVE in-person trade when he came down to visit! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured a hazy golden orange with a one finger pure white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, vinegar, dark fruit, and wood. The flavor was of sweet malt, tart cherry, wood, and fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. When I smelled the vinegar in the nose I was a little concerned at how this one was going to turn out. However, it was not present in the flavor which was nice. What I did find in the flavor was a very nicely balanced sweetness and tartness that made this one very easy to drink and quite enjoyable. My first brew from this brewery that I know of, and I hope it won't be my last. A very solid brew here.

Thanks to spycow for sharing this one. Getting local beers around here is getting more and more annoying.

A - Golden-orange beer that has a bit of a haze. Finger of white foam that left some random spots and lace on the glass.

S - Lots of acetobacter on the nose with this one. Pretty sharp, almost hurt the nose a bit but it smells nice with some grapes.

T - A very nice tartness here. It's quite sharp, with a touch of fruity sweetness. I'm surprised at how good this is, it's a very solid tasting American Wild Ale. Bit of wood.

M - Medium bodied, lower carbonation, very dry and tannic.

O - Very nice beer, it's a good example of the style and I enjoyed drinking it. Unfortunately can't find any anywhere, so odds of me getting more are slim.

Bottle shared by Chris (spycow). I skipped this one after being burned by too many mediocre Two Brothers offerings, and by the time I saw the positive reviews it was too late. Served in a Hill Farmstead wine glass.

A - A finger of white foam settles to a thick collar showing solid retention, some wisps and negligible lace. Transparent dark golden body.

S - Huge grape and red wine vinegar flavors mingle with massive acetobacter, and a touch of light oak. As the beer warms up there's a light plastic note, but on the whole this is pretty good, if not nostril-singing.

T - Again, very grape-heavy with vinous oak, dry oak, and some light funk in the finish. There's a vague popcorn note that I get from some of the Santa Fe wild ales, but it's not as intense as those. Not as impressive as the aroma unfortunately.

M - Medium bodied, moderate-to-low carbonation level, and an extremely dry and tannic texture. No obvious alcohol, but I wasn't really expecting any.

D - This was pretty decent, albeit too pricey at $10 for a 375ml bottle. Still it's another step in the right direction for Two Brothers' sour program - I think I liked Hoodwinked a little better but this was enjoyable as well.

Very funky and complex with aromas of bruised apples, pears, funky aromas and some spice with a bit of tart citrus aromas as well

really good feel and medium bodied with a good amount of sour apple and funk flavors

this was a lot more funky than I remembered it to be. if I didn't see this, I'd actually thought it was a flemish red. This is a real quality sour and another real great job from two brothers

Light peach, mildly clear, and bulbous. There is good carbonation flowing and a line of white head.
Great sour smell of salt, earth, honey notes, and aged cheese rind.
Smooth and creamy with less bite than the smell. Quite good saltiness, sour honey hints with the sour candied lemon peel.
This has a solid tang and zest with excellent flavor that is not mouth puckering and not too creamy. Askew shows a nice body and is really quality work on the wild/sours style.

I was able to have this on draft during craft beer week in chicago. I have since had it several times from a bottle poured into a tulip glass.

The fact that it took three years to brew this opus shows the amount of craftsmanship the brothers put into their beers. Much respect.

This beer is one of the best sours I have ever had. Pours a golden haze. Very little head.

The aroma is vinegar/sour with hints of funk and vanilla. Very subtle notes of white grape.

High level of astringency. Very sour. Not much carbonation. The vanilla and grape come through nicely. There is alot going on with this beer. It really plays on the tongue. My palate grabs something different each time I drink this. I find it very enjoyable. I love this brewery.

Thanks to lurchingbeast for sending this to me recently.

Pours a dark golden orange/copper color with a one finger white foam head that quickly settles into a thick lasting ring.  Sporadic spots of lacing left behind.  

Slightly funky aroma with lots of earthy oak and barnyard character.  Vinous with some lactic funk, acetic vinegar and tart dark fruits.  Hints of grape, dark cherry, etc.

Medium bodied with a tart, dry/funky presence that lingers over the sweeter vinous notes into a tart dry finish.  Puckering and sour without being harsh or acidic.  Lots of earthy oak and dry musty funk up front with brett and other bugs.  This is countered by the sweet vinous fruit notes, mostly dark cherry, grape and plun.  lingering acetic vinegar presence that makes me thirst for more.  Well balanced and pretty sour/funky without being overdone.  Pretty complex and easy to drink.

375ml bottle green corked and caged bottle.

It pours a nice color, a clear amber-orange with a nice head that quickly dissipates with some lacing.

My nose is clogged for some reason, but one nostril works, all I can say it is is very wine-like with a lot of oak.

Flavor is nice. Has a good cherry tartness, some funk, a lot of oak, and some grains.

I wish my nose didn't suddenly plug up right when I went to drink this one, oh well.

Cork and caged bottle into a Duvel Tulip.

A: Pours a light amber/goldish orange with a decent off white head, head settles to a small cap and leaves decent lacing. Nice.

S: Lemon, acidity, vinegar, slight cherry, white pepper, and and a lightly funky, oaky, wine like character.

T: Starts out very tart and acidic, lemon, white grape, a little musty funk, lightly sweet, and very dry, especially going into the finish. Acidity and Brett suck the moisture out of your mouth and pucker you up at the same time. Slight funky cheese notes every once in a while. Doesn't detract, but still noteworthy. Not something I've encountered outside an older Cantillon. Alcohol is non existant.

M: Light body, medium carbonation, slick on the palate, dry from the Brett.

O: Very nice. This is the second bottle I have drank, the first was a bit fruitier and not nearly as acidic or dry. The extra time has made a huge difference. If I see that last bottle hanging around the next time I'm at the store I bought this one from, I will snag it up. Very solid and under the radars. Probably a good thing for those able to get it. Try one, no disappointments here.

Bottle into a tulip.

A -- Nice pop when the cork js removed. Pours light copper in color with almost two fingers of off-white head. Head fades rather quickly and doesn't leave much lacing. Initially a big stream of carbonation slows down after a few minutes.

S -- White grapes and a bit of lemon tartness with a mild yeast funk. Some tart apple as well.

T -- Nice tart of tart white grapes and sour apple up front. Not much earthy funk really, but a small yeast presence. Faint oak notes. Middle seems to fall a bit flat. Finish is tart with a bit more funk coming through.

M -- Medium crisp mouthfeel that finishes with a pleasant but not overwhelming dryness.

O -- This definitely has a white wine character to it. More earthy funk would be welcome, but still a pretty good sour. Just lacking some complexity.

Poured from a heavy 375 mL caged and corked green bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: Askew is quite hazy out of the bottle, with a dark orange peach hue and a small fizzy off-white cap.

Smell: The aroma has a strong acidity with acetic undertones. Tart cherry and citrus are more prominant than the hidden brown malts. Some oak and tannic notes in the back. Slightly funky.

Taste: The flavor already has very little sweetness in either fruit or malt form. Light cherry and malt notes are barely noticeable before a very strong tartness comes over the tongue. Tart cherries and even more sour lemon, orange, and grapefruit flavors dominate. A tannic oakiness and a bit of biting pure acidity come in at the end along with a little bit of Bretty funk, eventually leaving my mouth with a fairly tart aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is crisp yet stays out of the way. Much more noticeable is the acetic acid feel and the pungent funkiness that makes this two parts sour, one part wild.

Overall: Based on my recollection of this beer from when it first came out, it seems like it is already beginning to develop nicely. The fruit and malt are fading into the sour and the effects of the Brettanomyces and Saccharomyces are growing. This is a very nice sour that seems to be flying under the radar right now.

A: Cork kind of, um, slips out more than anything. I'm apprehensive; perhaps this beer isn't carbonated. At least we didn't have to fight the cork like the infamous Koopa's Birthday Blend tasting of 2009, where we blended several fine Flat Abbey beverages. But I digress. The pour allays my fears; it is lightly carbed, producing a small film of beige bubbles on top of the beer. The body itself is a golden amber color, slightly hazy upon pouring, but becoming a bit clearer later.

S: White grape, tannins (oak) -- my initial impression is that this is strongly reminiscent of Russian River Temptation. But it's a bit sweeter on the nose, with more pronounced vanilla and apricot. It is also more pronounced on the acetic acid (vinegar) side with an element of moldy mushroom that RR's wild ales have never captured.

T: White grape leads the flavor, segueing into a strong presence of sweet vanilla, tart apricot, green apple, and a touch of lemon. The beer becomes unabashedly sour (vinegar) afterward; it's not irredeemable, but it is a bit out of balance and I find that a flaw. Tannins give the beer a very light astringency.

M: More sour than tannic in the finish, with an after-burn that betrays the imbalanced sourness of the beer. Good carbonation and heft.

O: This is a solid beer; there are some better examples of the style, and quite a few worse ones, but it delivered all the basic expectations for a wild ale.

Another big thanks goes out to thewimperoo for sending this as an extra in a trade. Very intrigued to try this wild ale.

Appearance: Pours a very hazy golden color with light orange highlights. About 1/2" of pure white head forms, which has nice retention. Lacing is fairly limited.

Smell: White grape skins, some sweetness, and a lot of woodiness and vanilla. Some nice funk on the back end, and a hint of sourness.

Taste: Quite a bit of sweetness up front, with some hints of white grape as well. Some woodiness and vanilla emerges. Funk on the back end, without much acidity.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Light bodied with a good deal of fine carbonation. Great mouthfeel. Overall, a pretty nice wild ale. Would probably be a good candidate for aging so the brett can do some work, and diminish the sweetness a bit. Otherwise I was pretty impressed.
