Beers this strong should not be this drinkable- can we write a law already?! The truth is that its strong taste and balanced flavors exceed Red Ales and extends into American Strong Ale territory- with the likes of Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale.

Even as the beer pours, it separates to reveal a deep crimson redish-brown color with absolute dark clarity. Above the beer, its creamy froth is long-lived with sandy-tan foam and its trailing lace is strong with well defined rings and intricately woven patterns. It's a delight of a beer even to the eye.

Pine needles strike first, and the the citrus peels- the beer is certainly hop-centric to the nose. But a quick rebuttal of malt reveals supporting scents of bread crust, toast, deeply caramelized grain, and toffee. It gives me the sense of "Cracker Jacks" ballpark candies. Clean and pure in its aroma, the beer has not yeast fruit, spice, or distractions that pull it from the dialogue of malt and hops.

To taste, its the malt that strikes first: burnt caramel, toffee, sorghum, and maple offer boldly sweet flavors a split second ahead of the piney, gin-like, grassy, and lemony taste of hops. Citrus peels, pith, and resins seep into its taste and begin to govern the taste thereafter. The beer's incredible balance is remarkably even, as each alternating sip bring citrusy hop in one draw and then sweet malt the next.

I absolutely love this beer- but I do so with the appreciation that I do with those Stone Brewing beers that staddle this like so well. Two Brothers as captured this taste with magistracy and yearning.

A: The beer is crystal clear dark garnet red in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high light beige head that gradually died down, leaving a very thin head covering the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of citrusy hops are present in the nose along with notes of pine resin. As the beer warms up, notes of alcohol also become apparent and somewhat mask the hops.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has flavors of citrusy and pine resin hops along with some notes of caramel from the underlying malts and faint amounts of initial sweetness. Moderate to strong amounts of bitterness are present, which intensify and linger through the finish. Some hints of alcohol become perceptible as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation and hints of warming from the alcohol.
O: Although the alcohol is relatively well masked from the taste (particularly before it warms up), the strong amount of bitterness makes this a beer that needs to be slowly sipped. It is a good beer for a cold winter night.

And here ends the 15-part celebration of the brewery's fifteenth anniversary, complete with no obvious mention of the fact. Nice. Anyway, this stuff pours a clear blood-garnet topped by a finger of glowing off-white foam. The nose comprises grapefruit zest, toasted biscuit, light rye bread, mandarin orange, and a touch of leek in the background. The taste brings in more of the same, along with a healthy dose of fruit rind and a decent addition of pine resin. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, a very nice imperial red, one gushing with hops without burning the tongue, and one brimming with booze without forcing a cringe or grimace. Not a bad capstone, really.

Somehow put off reviewing this beer until the last one in the fridge is staring me down.
Here goes... poured a 12 oz. into a tulip glass.

Deep saturated amber color with auburn crimson highlights. A dense head of foam that rises above the rim in a convex dome, sturdy and not wavering. As it settles, there's a copious amount of lace in the glass. Bright clarity, not much carbonation to see.

Earthy vegetal hop aroma, some sweet crystal malt and marmalade sweetness.

Floral bitter piney notes, light apricot sweetness, lingering earthy hop bitterness. Fairly dry with a noticeable abv. Not as smooth or flavorful as Cane & Ebel. Its sort of easy to get distracted from, a good beer but ultimately not all that compelling in the end.

A - Poured out a clear, burgundy color with a one-finger, off white head of bubbly foam. It left thin rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled strongly of pine. Some citrus notes, too.

T - It tasted piney and resiny with a burnt toast maltiness. Bitter and tasty.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium to full bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is a really good imperial amber ale. Two Brothers continues to impress.

I am a big fan of Two Brothers and their beers and I just wish that they would begin CANning as so many are already doing. I spied this in the cooler at The Fridge recently and put it in my shopping basket, a.k. a. a six-pack carrier.

From the bottle: "This resiny imperial red ale is loaded with citrus and pine aromas that dominate the complex toasty malt character. Revel in the hops."; "Two Brothers is a craft brewery on the outskirts of Chicago that specializes in rare and seldom-brewed beer styles. The two of us - Jason and Jim Ebel - strive to produce the very best beers available anywhere."; "We hope that you enjoy them as much as we do!"

My aggro pour created a faux-cascade which settled into two dense, tawny fingers of head with great retention. Color was a deep copper with NE-quality clarity and while I would have liked to take it over to Full Circle Recycling, I have been advised that color does NOT equate to metallic value and if I attempt same again, the authorities will be brought in. Whoops! Maybe I'll try it in Lincoln, NE and they can put me in the can alongside Val Midwest. Speaking of NE, the clarity was of NE-quality standards. Nose smelled of pine resin! How do I know? I started out in Deck Department on the USS Fulton (AS-11) in the US Navy and pine resin acts as a good preservative on non-synthetic line. Speaking of sticky resin, I may just scrape the lacing out of my glass and put it into a bowl, if you catch my drift. Mouthfeel was medium, but who cares? It was the resinous, hoppy flavor that was the main attraction and it did not disappoint. This is what passes for an Amber these days?!? Gimme more. Ho! 9.5% ABV and 124 IBUs?!? No wonder I feel like I just went several rounds with a gorilla. My idea of revelry is now to get naked and make snow angels. Finish was slightly hot with a blast of hops like a flamethrower going down my gullet. All beers should be like this.

I picked this up at Brass Rail, enjoyed in a willybecker poured from the 12oz brown bottle lot 3183.

The color is dark crimson with great clarity and pale tan cream with fine bead lace clings in a film. The smell is very good with a hop aroma similar to ruby red grapefruit with a mild caramal odor from the malt with slight mix of tropical fruit -papaya and fruity yeast esters in general. The feel is great a very good balance of malt with low sweetness more toast and citrus influence with mild acidity/bitterness in the middle and there is a mild alcohol presence in the finish which is semi-dry.

The taste is very good, nicely hopped with some pacific northwest flavor coming through that creates the flavor of ruby red just as the nose promised, very light bitterness, however that builds into a more imperial red taste as it warms with the malt flavor supporting in a nice fresh toasted but lightly caramel influence. The hop taste becomes more tropical and the element of alcohol detracts slightly however, a mild hint of berry emerges with it. Overall I would recommend this as it exceeded my expectations, very good red from a brewer I have a lot of respect for ever since my first taste of their beer at Dark Lord day in '08

A: Pours a crystal clear deep garnet red in color with some amber highlights and light amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall dense creamy light beige head that slowly reduces to a very thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer with a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of citrus/grapefruit peel hops along with some lighter notes of pine hops. Very light notes of caramel malts and some hints of alcohol as the beer warms up.

T: Upfront there are light to moderate flavors of caramel malt sweetness underneath the moderate to strong flavors of pine hops and citrus/grapefruit peel hops. There are moderate amounts of bitterness and light notes of alcohol in the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Relatively smooth with a small amount of alcohol warming as the beer warms.

O: This beer is a big beer and is enjoyable but is not the easiest to drink (especially as it warms up and the alcohol becomes more pronounced). There is an aggressive bitterness combined with the high ABV that makes this one have to be sipped rather slowly.

I apparently paid $3.50 for this single. Hope it's worth it.

A - Color itself is a deep amber brown, clear with bubbles throughout (lively) and a 1/2 inch of sticky opaque colored head. Lacing is stellar.

S - Simone hops and caramel malts lead with bready base and some gram cracker.

T - Starts off with a citrus hop zest then caramel and gram cracker malts, sweet. Then comes the Simone which are somewhat harsh. clinging to the palate the seem to hide the ABV well which is appreciated in any DIPA or Imperial. Taste is balanced.

M - Medium to heavy you can feel the ABV but don't taste it.

Overall one of the better Imperial Amber Ales I have tried (obviously with the highest ABV) but with limited release I don't see a $3.50 charge to try it again.

This big beer is on the darkest side of the spectrum, well beyond amber at a dark brownish red, bright despite its darkness but only transparent because of its complete clarity. The chunky tan head manages a full finger and settles there, and patching sticks to the glass as it follows the fluid down.
This is an aromatic red, and it makes one wonder why it has to be such a middle-of-the-road style. This beer has far more character than its many pedestrian counterparts; not only is it hoppier, it also has a stronger malts presence and just a big bouquet overall. Pine gives way to orange peel and lots of it, bitter and zesty. Heady and resinous, it achieves balance in a big caramel sweetness, lots of toast and bread crust that follow alongside it almost from the beginning.
The taste continues exactly the same pattern but switching the order, malts hitting the tongue first and hops coming alongside. It's just as big but balanced, so much flavor in this beer. Pine, orange zest, some grapefruit, and a bit more from leaf and lemon notes hit the tongue. The same balance is kept as lots of caramel and toffee add sweetness, toasted breads and crust adding depth. Every single sip gives a big dose of both hops and malt.
Big crispness hits the medium-full body up front and continues through as it goes creamy smooth on the tongue.

Appearance - cherry hues amber, nice top of manila foam, laces well.

Aroma - caramel and orange, reminds me of an aged dipa.

Taste - sweet up front, followed by a very harsh bitterness. Kind of makes me think this is infected, but there is still plenty of sweetness here. Very strange. Swallow is very bitter, dry, harsh, but with a backdrop of sweetness. Finishes warm with alcohol.

Mouthfeel - decent body, crisp.

Overall - bad flavor after the initial sweetness has me considering the drain on this one, a rarity in this house. Maybe a fresher sample would fare better, I'll keep my eyes open and re-evaluate if I get a chance.

Poured into Bruery snifter. Appearance is a clear crimson with 1 finger of tan head, nice retention, and heavy lacing. Nose features heavy caramel malt character up front with toasted bread in the middle. Resinous hops cut through towards the end, but are surprisingly tame for the high IBU content. The taste features assertive hoppy bitterness, now I am getting the 126 IBUs which is not necessarily a good thing. The bitterness remains on the palate as a touch of the caramel malt sneaks through. The 9.5% is very apparent on the end. I was hoping for a beefed up Cane and Ebel, but this one doesn't have the same level of finesse. This is definitely a step in the right direction for Two Bros. Mouthfeel is moderate with moderate to high carbonation. Overall worth a try, but the 15.99 price tag is a bit steep for the sixer.

The revelry imperial red is amazing and is in competition with cane and ebel as my favorite beer from two bros! The beer pours a clear rich amber with a thin frothy head that is lacing like a Vicky secret catalog. The smell is powered with piney citrus hops. The taste is a beautifully balanced beer of caramel malt with California hops. The mouthfeel is full body with smooth carbonation. Overall the beer is awesome...only problem is that I want to drink a ton of it but it is loaded with abv!!!

A- Poured into a pint glass with a dark red body with some nice ruby hues around the edges where light comes through. A creamy, two finger head forms nicely in the glass. Head retention is quite good. Nice rings of lace around the glass.

S- Reminds me of a hoppy Barleywine and less hoppy DIPAs at the same time, it has malty and hoppy characteristics. Pine, orange peel and flowery hints come from the hops. Nutty, caramel, sweet and toasted grain aromas as well.

T- Follows the nose but maybe even more malt comes out here. It has that distinct deep caramel, toasted nutty flavor you find in many 8%+ ABV Amber Ales. A bit of an alcohol edge some Barleywines have but it is nice. Hops are substantial with a pine forward profile with notes of citrus zest as well.

MF- Moderately thick body with a silky overall consistency. Carbonation is at a moderately low level and it helps the flavors this way. Fair amount of bitterness and alcohol warmth in the finish.

Now I miss this brewery even more. This is a new one to me but a beer I would drink again for sure. Anytime I have fresh Two Brothers products I am more and more satisfied by the brewery overall.

Advertised as a seasonal, but does not detail which season (although fall is listed on the header for this beer here on BA). Lot # but no dating on the bottle.
Poured into SN IPA glass.
Nice hop aroma, but not overly strong. Some fruit and some more neutral yeast. Malt is faint with slight sweetness and a bit of toast.
Big tan head. Reddish amber and mostly clear.
Flavor is more evident and complex. Good blending of flavors. Nice crispy crunchy toast malt and hop flavors swimming through and laying on the tongue for a lengthy finish. Quick hit in the gut of warmth, but really background alcohol other than that. Greenish hops and some oil resin that avoids excess.
On the lighter side of moderate for a bigger beer. Nicely carbonated.
Flavor is the star for this one. Age may have impacted aroma, but I'm sure is present in a greater degree when new. Nonetheless, an enjoyable slower drinking ale with interesting hop flavors.

A: Poured from the bottle into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is ruby/mahogany-amber with a small off-white head. Some legs of lace on the way down.

S: Very nice - citrus and pine over toffee and caramel malt. Perfect balance for this style - i.e., American Imperial Red Ale.

T: Sweet toasty malt, caramel malt, toffee & brown sugar provide the malty foundation. Follows at the back end with a good amount of grapefruity citrus and resiny pine bitterness. Finishes with lingering pine needle bitterness and a touch of ABV heat. That alcohol (9.5%, so no surprise) is felt down the gulley and as heat in the belly.

M: Call it medium-to-full in heft. Carbonation is fairly light, but enough to keep it from becoming thick or syrupy in feel.

O: Impressed with this one more so than I have been with other Two Brothers releases. Very nice balance of sweet (brown sugar, toffee, caramel malt) and bitter (citrus, pine and resiny pine). Good version of an Imperial Red; I'd have this again.

Poured into an Olde Hickory glass on 1/17/13

Lot 3132

Nice-looking tobacco brown of medium depth. The head has loose bubbles but they hold for a while at the one and a half finger mark before dropping down. Circles of lace remain that make the inside of the glass look like a golf ball.

Hops aplenty come bursting out of the aroma, equally oily and resinous. There is a strong, bright citrus presence: peach, tangerine, grapefruit and such. It smells very juicy at first, bringing to mind marmalade and fruit jam as it opens up. Touches of pine. Biscuit dust hangs in the air as pastry-like malts lay underneath. I'm not getting any caramel.

Breakfast and beer are almost always brought together some combination of coffee, oatmeal, maple and, perhaps, bacon. But this; this, my friends, finds the oft overlook sweet side of breakfast - biscuits lathered in jam and jelly, and fruit pasties to spare.

The flavors develop in a much different manner: Toasted grains and bread come first, though both are soon awash in a swell of hop oils. Here, the hops exhibit much more pine; lots of sticky resin. Citric zest peppers the mid-section. Indeed, the hops are worthy of revelry As the oils carry the beer on, a smooth alcohol heat moves across the palate. More hop flavor than bitterness.

The feel is resinous enough that the body might as well be called full. Carbonation is taxed heavily by the oils which means it falls comfortably within my preferential range. The finish is zesty, dry and the alcohol is less appreciable over time.

I'm a sucker for a good imperial red ale, but have been disappointed many times by Two Brothers. When I came across a chilled single, I had to give it a try. They knocked it outta the park with this one. An easy recommendation.

Based upon the earlier reviews of this beer, I was excited to try this as soon as it was released. After trying half of the six-pack over the past two weeks, my opinion is that those other reviews are substantially unaware or discounting the hot mess of ethanol that this beer has going on. While there are good malt and hop flavors, they are constantly fighting against an overly-aggressive ethanol presence that takes a substantial amount of enjoyment out of the flavor of this beer. The hops also gravitate more towards generic bitterness than specific fruit, herb, flower, or wood smells/tastes (perhaps the alcohol assists in this occurring). In general, this recipe is a mess: it needs to tone down the ethanol in a big way, or otherwise surpass it with malt and hop flavor. This could be interesting to age and see what develops, but is otherwise a very slow sipper, and I will probably age my two remaining bottles.

Pours a tall, 2cm head of beige foam that has above average retention (especially for the ethanol content) and is composed of small and some medium-sized bubbles. The head slowly descends to a thin ring around the glass with some islands of foam atop the body, leaving decent lacing along the sides of the glass, a few large shapes and spiderwebs clinging indefinitely. Body is a deep amber read color, with light bringing out orange and light red hues.

Smells of very deep caramel malts, pine resin and grapefruit rind-like hops, slight smoked or roasted malt character, and substantial ethanol.

Tasting opens with a fairly excellent, deep, caramel malt sweetness tempered by pine resin and mild grapefruit rind, all of which occurs on the front of the palate. Mid-palate of high-intensity bitterness that's substantially balanced by the deep caramel malt sweetness and ethanol. Back of palate picks up more modest bitterness and roasted/smoky malt characters, which are quickly subsumed by substantial ethanol flavor. Lingering aftertaste of ethanol (big), hop bitterness, and caramel and minor roasted malt. At 9.5%, this doesn't hide the ethanol very well, as opposed to Oskar Blues' "G'Knight." A bit disappointing in that regard, but the flavors besides the ethanol are still very nice (though the hops come across a bit generic after a time, tasting more "bitter" than anything else).

Beer is medium-heavy to heavy bodied, with fairly minor carbonation for the heaviness, resulting in a slightly turbid feel, though the hop resins and oils present also make this oily and slick. Ethanol is easily felt on tongue, back of throat, within nostrils, and lingers long after each sip: fairly disappointing. Substantial stickiness remains on palate and lips after each sip.

Deep amber/copper in color, with a moderate, off-white head of foam.
Aroma-Big whiff of piney, citrussy hops.
Taste-Toasted malt, caramel, immediatley pushed back by a big wave of piney and citrus hops.
Big, bold hop flavors throughout, and relatively smooth for the high ABV. Very flavorfull and warming. Hop-head recommended.

Bottle into imperial nonic.

Looks ok-- dark reddish brown. Clear. It looks like it *should* be murky but it isn't. One finger of ecru head settled to a nice thin cap of frothy foam.

Smells richly malty-- sweet caramel and toffee. A big hoppiness is present here, and it is extremely bitter. The flavors of the hops don't hold a candle to the bitterness... But there are some floral and citrus notes.

Feels oily and surypy. Big hop oil coating my teeth after each sip, but it's a sugary kind of gritty oiliness/suryp feel.

Overall-- this really isn't a bad beer. It's not the best imperial red I've had, but it's closer to the top than to the bottom.
Totally worth a drink.

This style is always very pretty in the glass and Two Brothers does what it supposed to do - look appealing. It has a little head but nothing major.

The aroma is special. Uniquely slightly over the top, as an American should be. It has hoppy and malty aromas nicely mixed together. It does not smell too boozy.

The taste is a little thick and chewy with loads of malts and a bit of bitterness. Nice and complex. Again, the booze is well hidden (I had no idea it was this high until I saw it here).

The aftertaste is a lingering of the previous niceness with a bit of a booze burn.

Overall, this is a nice, high quality brew.

Two Brothers No. 15 beer of 15 beers for 15 years. Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Half Acre snifter.

A- Pours a clear dark copper with a 2 finger light tan head. Small blotches and bubbles linger on the glass.

S- Caramel, brown sugar, citrus, dark fruits, and pine.

T- Sweet toasted malts, caramel, toffee, pineapple and citrus, brown sugar, with big pungent citrus and pine bitterness.

M- Medium body and carbonation. Has a nice creaminess.

O- 2 Bros. got this one right at least! Very nice balance of sweet and bitter citrus along with some brown sugar. It lists the beer at 24 ibu's, although it has a nice bitter punch it is no palate wrecker (not the beer) by any means.

Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Dark copper tan, ruby red. Nice 1 inch foamy thick head and tons of lacing.

Smell - Rye, wet danky hops, pine, lemon, grapefruit, orange, some hops, added sugars, some spices.

Taste - Huge rye/hop bite. Really nice grapefruit/orange bite with the rye as a backbone. Malts are caramel and toffee flavored and add some bold sweetness to counter the sweet acidic and citric flavors. Alcohol is present and adds warmth to each drink.

Mouthfeel - Huge rye/hop kick nails tounge with citric fruits. ALcohol warms tounge and palate. More hops and some malts coat palate with bold sweetness, and citric fruits. Aftertaste is maly, dry and bittered.

Overall - Awesome, very tasty, tons of flavors, and balanced. Each aspect adds more flavor and works together to give this a mountain of flavor. Its not to sweet, hoppy or bitter, simply balanced perfectly. Excellent beer, another winner from this great brewery. Why aint this brewery more well known? There making craft beers that are better then some of the top brewies out there.

Deep orange red glow with nice clarity and about a finger and a half of off white head. Lots of grapefruit and citrus on the nose along with a good but of caramel, touch of honey, and burnt sugar.

Nice and subtle yet big on flavor. Nice underlying bitterness throughout , sweet dark fruits up front, hippiness is a bit onion yes a bit fruity as well. Sounds like an odd combination but along with some of the caramel malts it actually works kind of nicely. Layered in a strange way but it works, quite resinous with a pretty long bitterness. Overall a pretty good beer. No bottled on date but I'm sure if this were extremely fresh it'd be a totally different beer
