A 500ml bottle with a BB of Feb 2014, so it's just out of date. Purchased a while back from Trembling Madness in York. An RIS brewed by the Ossett-owned Rat Brewery.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A very dark ruby-brown hue that appears black in the glass. Yields a large head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a few minutes before settling as a patchy surface layer. Some lacing. Aroma of dark, fruity malt with hints of roasted grain, coffee, delicate cocoa, faint burnt notes, dried fruit, molasses/caramel, earthy yeast and a twinge of stewed hops. A whiff of warming booze in the background. Excellent; well-rounded and sublime in its subtlety.

Tastes of rich, fruity malt with a complex character and a lingering bitter finish. Notes of roasted malt, burnt grain, coffee, faint cocoa, molasses, caramel, dried fruit, a twinge of brown sugar, earthy yeast and stewed hops. Slightly sweet, followed by a strident, hop-driven bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and mildly tingly, with soft carbonation and good body for the style. Could be a shade thicker for the strength. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of roasted malt, fruitiness and bitter hops.

Very nice - in fact it exceeds my expectations. Looks the part, while the aroma and flavour are redolent with roasted malt, sweet fruity notes and a dry bitterness that packs a punch. Good body - my only (minor) complaint is that it could be a tad creamier. A fantastic brew; finely balanced with superb depth of character. Great to see a local brewery producing beer of this quality. Well worth sampling if you have the chance.
