The bottle I got has a best before date of 08/13 stamped on it, so I don't think this is retired.
Cracking open this bottle conditioned beer made a noticeably quiet hiss - a prelude to some low carbonation. The pour reveals a hazy cold liquid with the odd meandering bubble trail. Bread dough and caramel mix with an earthy, woody hop profile in the nose. Lots of fruitiness is also evident. The taste malt forward with lots of breadyness and arrowroot biscuit notes. Pithy UK hops (Fuggles?) provides a great balance. A very mild hop citrus flavor develops over time. Jammy yeast notes are prominent throughout. The mouthfeel is delicate and light with a very restrained carbonation level. Very much like a cask. The finish is malty with a berry fruitiness. Hop bitterness is there but shortlived.
This is a great Bitter. Very complex for a beer of this gravity, yet impossibly quaffable. Worth a try if you're in Scotland.
