Black Belle™ is a limited special release Imperial Stout; it’s collaboration between Blackstone Brewing Company® and Nelson’s Green Brier™ Distillery, makers of Belle Meade Bourbon™. Infused with cacao nibs and aged for more than seven months in bourbon barrels, the beer is smooth and sweet, with definite notes of bourbon, oak, and dark chocolate.

No bottling date that I can see.

A: Pours pitch-black with a small and very loud fizzy medium-brown head. Head dissipates quickly with no lacing at all.

S: Big sharp bourbon notes. Heavy on the caramel and oak. Lots of chocolate and vanilla, kinda fudgey in fact. Little bit of toasted marshmallow when swirled.

T: Similar to the aroma. Sharp bourbon up front with caramel and strong oak. Light on the dark fruits, just a hint of raisin. Really nice bittersweet chocolate in the middle. Like a stoneground chocolate bar. Toffee from the bourbon in the finish with some caramel to keep it sweet. Hint of vanilla and then some oak in the finish. Some sharp alcohol in the finish but nothing overpowering, cuts the beer pretty well. Lingering toasted oak and toffee in the aftertaste.

M: Lower carbonation and heavy bodied.

O: Big, sharp barrel-aged imperial stout. Strong, fresh bourbon flavors. Very strong in fact, the strength of the beer and the bourbon reminds me of BCBS quite a bit. I think a little age might do this one a favor, the barrel presence is very strong and might be overpowering a bit of the base beer. Still an excellent stout that focuses on the bourbon presence with a really nice chocolate element.

Tasted On: 04-17-2014
Freshness: 2014 Vintage
Packaging: 22 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap, boxed
Glassware: Snifter
Purchased: Single from Craft Brewed

Appearance: Color is jet black and opaque, topped by a small head of tan. The head retention is low and lacing is just fair; pretty typical for a beer of this ABV, however.

Smell: Very aromatic -- chocolate, dark cherries, oak wood, figs and other dark fruits, plus coffee notes. The kind of beer you want to smell over and over

Taste: Powerful flavors of sweet malts, ripened fruits and dark chocolates; this brew is quite rich. The whiskey aspects add a noticeable warming from the alcohol.

Mouthfeel: The thick body is also quite creamy and smooth. Carbonation is low. It finishes with aftertastes of mild coffee, bourbon and chocolate malts.

Overall: An exceptional stout from Blackstone -- quite delightful and recommended!
