This beer was not what I was expecting at all when I bought it. It has a suprisingly dark copper color and has suprisingly little hop aroma. Based on the description on the bottle, I expected a light straw colored beer and a sharp piney hop aroma.

Although the beer was very different from expectation, it was also very pleasing for what it delivered. The beer has a very appealing taste and a nice creamy mouthfeel. For what aroma is present there is a mild scent of sweetness.

For those fellow hop heads, this is a bit of a divergence from the norm, but a nice tasty change of pace.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Copper-colored with a one-finger head
S: Malt, citrus and caramel but not bold or distinctive
T: The notes match the nose. Tasty but plain
M: Medium-bodied and crisp
O: No flaws but nothing unique; an average IPA

A: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Body is coppery/orangey-amber with a small khaki-colored head that leaves nice rings of lace.

S: Brown sugar, caramel malt and some piney, grassy hop bitterness.

T: Pretty much follows the nose, with a malty foundation of brown sugar and caramel malt, which is followed by green hops: pine, grass and even a minty or floral taste at times. A bit of woody earthiness lingers on the palate after a surprisingly bitter finish.

M: Medium in heft, decently creamy in feel.

O: Different. Reminds me at times of Smuttynose Durrty (a strong Brown ale) or even Stone Arrogant Bastard (an American Strong Ale) more than your typical IPA. As something different, I like.

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Darker orange/amber color with one finger of off white head, good medium lacing, but the color is more of an amber or red ale.
S - Aroma is quite pleasant. A little pine and grass, big sweet orange juice and citrus, sweet caramel malt, a hint of some tropical fruits in the mix too.
T - Flavor drops off, has some piney bitterness, but a mix of caramel and bread malts are more dominant, there's some dry bitter flavor, even a little bit of spicy hop bite, and after a while i've notice even a little earthy/nutty quality to it.
M - Finishes quite nice though, medium feel that's balanced.
O - This beer has its ups and downs, but overall its a pretty good unique IPA. Nothing in the realm of amazing, but definitely worth having. The aroma rocks, and I really wish the flavor followed up to it, but its got some unique traits that make it good.

Not your prototypical IPA. Generally I like the brewery but not in this instance. In my estimation this is a foul ball. The smell and initial taste remind me of the dundees IPA. The beer is just average but below average IPA.

I also disagree with labeling. Don't catch the piney hops. Has a malty start and alcohol type finish in mg estimation.

Pours a hazy brown-orange, burnt-copper colour that reminds me of an aging penny. Definitely one of the darker IPA's I've tried. The white-brown head didn't stick around long and left little lacing.

Not surprisingly given its hue, the malts dominate right from the nose. It's a basic sweetness, tough to place. There's also a pleasant, earthy musk, along with some pine and a hint of citrus.

I immediately liked the taste of this beer. Brown sugar and caramel malts hit right away. It's substantial, almost chewy, but it goes down quite easily. Piney, woodsy, citrusy, salty, peppery ...and balanced. Piney resin creates a bitterness on the palate. There's no alcohol taste here.

This beer is definitely more than the sum of its parts. The bottle advertises, "High bitterness / mildly malty / piney hops," but this is not a hop-forward brew. It's a unique offering which is complex enough to challenge yet balanced enough to session. It's not only the best beer that I've tried from this brewery but one which I will add to my regular rotation if it sticks around.
