Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Rustic and unpretentious, Scratch #118 is our interpretation of the Grisette, a low-alcohol blonde ale that originated in the Hainaut province of southern Belgium. Light-bodied and refreshing, the Grisette is a dependable thirst quencher that recently has resonated with “session beer” drinkers, as its flavor profile shares some key attributes with its cousin, the Saison. Historically, Saisons were brewed in farmhouses to serve to the working farmers. On the other hand, Grisettes (which loosely translates to "little gray" in French) were served to miners. Although the Grisette would eventually experience a long period of dormancy, the craft beer industry has slowly breathed new life into this simple, easy-to-drink style. French Saison yeast adds a slight earthy, spicy quality, while the use of spelt (an ancient type of wheat) tips its hat to the Grisette’s past heritage and adds a bit of old world charm to this long-forgotten beer style.

A sessionable saison, it pours a super clear light yellow. Smell is of phenolic yeast and not much else.

Taste is very light, almost bland. This was the first beer of the night, and I didn’t want to drink heavier beers then attempt to taste this. I think it’s just a bit too light in flavor. The body is light and crisp, but it’s almost as if you’re drinking water. Perhaps refreshing after a hot day in the sun, but otherwise it lacks any real flavor to keep me coming back.

Served on-tap at the brewery. This is a Grisette.

A - Pours golden orange with a nice half finger tall white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving spotty trails of lace down the glass.

S - Smells of mild fruitiness, some nice spice from the saison yeast, very light funk and some lightly toasted grain. Took a little while to get going, good enough once it does.

T - Starts off with a bit of chewy grain quickly giving way to some spicy saison yeast, light funk and some nice fruitiness. Finish is mostly clean with a bit of chewy grain and some light dryness, doesn't linger for very long.

M - Light body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, light feel with some dryness at the end of each sip.

O - A nice enough grisette. It has some nice flavor and it is easy to drink. Nothing world class here but it wasn't really trying to be. Worth a shot if you are into the style.

Troegs attempting a Grisette is awesome news, nice to see their experimentation leading down a somewhat unique path. On tap at the Troegs taproom, the brew appears a clear golden copper color with a thin tan head. Some patchy lace sticks to the glass.

The aroma contains a faint amount of clove and some pink bubblegum-like spice. A little spicy faintly like pepper mixes with herbal hops and a grassy inclusion.

The taste is dry and grassy with a faint clove spice addition with the previously mentioned pink bubblegum aspect. Slight hints of pear or apple skin with a fruity appeal. It has a grassy hop character into the finish that is almost vegetative and phenolic with hints of plastic.

This is a light bodied brew that is modestly carbonated. It is very watery by even Grisette and other mild ale standards. The feel on this is pretty terrible almost like it was watered down post fermentation or just really really over-attenuated. I had big hopes for this and it was pretty much a flop.

I had this on tap at the brewery tasting room served in a pokal.

The color is a light golden with good clarity and thick white cap that settles fast with visible carbonation and no lace to speak of. The smell is very mild perhaps subtle herbal notes but yeast is faint in the aroma. The feel is okay, but mostly spritzy and light bodied with very dry finish.

The taste is as light as the scent lets on, very mild yeast presence with perhaps a light spice tinge but all in all it is pretty simple and very dry without much in the way of malt or yeast flavor it has no real hop in the taste either. Overall it is dry and light so it might be good for a palate cleanser but I would not say this really worth having again.
