Notes/Commercial Description:
Brewed with native Pennsylvania neck pumpkins harvested just a few miles from our brewery at Strites’ Orchard, Master of Pumpkins conjures the spirit of autumn by combining roasted pumpkins and traditional pie spices with a French saison yeast. This natural fermentation releases a palate of vanilla, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, and honey. In addition to 750mL bottles, Master of Pumpkins is also currently available on draft and for take-out growler fills in the Tasting Room. Taste it you will see. More is all you need!

Super excited to pull the cork on this and see what Troegs has conjured up. Note, Troegs must still be working out the kinks in their corking machine, cause this thing was damn near impossible to remove. I was actually considering pulling out the wine opener.

Pours a crystal clear deep copper color, with a small thin head. Smells of pumpkin pie spices, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a bit of clove. There is something in there as well that is crust or bread reminiscent.

Taste is pretty dang solid. A blast of spices fades to a bready caramel like sweetness, then the spices come back on the finish. Cinnamon and nutmeg hold the stage for the spices, but I’m almost certain there is some clove and or allspice going on as well. The back and forth between the spice and sweet is quite nice.

Mouthfeel is spot on. I had heard rumors of excessive carbonation and thinness, but I experienced none of that. It doesn’t have the oily slickness that pumking has, but it certainly has a mouthfeel that is on par for the beer.

Another Troegs offering that I think is worth picking up. I wouldn’t buy a case of it, but I would certainly drink a few over the fall season.

Wow. This one tastes like Big Red gum. A huge miscalculation on the part of Troegs here, far too spiced (especially with cinnamon) without the sweet malt backbone that'd be required to provide balance to that level of spice. I get that you might make a small batch of this as an experiment, but how can you possibly brew it twice, and release it in bombers? Oof.

A - Voluminous three plus fingers worth of crisp slightly airy light khaki colored froth comprised of medium and large sized bubbles... Audibly fizzy... Excellent retention... The color is darker than expected in teeters on the fine line between dark amber and light caramel brown... A limited bit of slightly sluggish to moderate paced carbonation... A very nice looking Pumpkin Ale... A moderate bit of lacing clings to the sides of the glass....

S - The gourd presence is at the forefront, but it takes on a fairly timid presence... It's more reminiscent of butternut squash rather than pumpkin puree... A strong malt base comprised of rich dark breads... The spice component is fairly subtle... Cinnamon... Nutmeg... A hint of ginger... Very pleasant and slightly unique for the style...

T - The spice is dialed up a notch or two or three but stops just short of becoming overpowering... All spice... Clove... Nutmeg... Cinnamon... Ginger.. Some light graham cracker crust notes... The pumpkin / gourd is mostly missing on the palate...

M - Medium bodied... Sturdy... Spry carbonation... A touch of dryness throughout...

D Not nearly as bad a beer as some reviews would lead you to believe, but a rather unremarkable pumpkin ale none the less... Very nice appearance and aroma give way to average at flavor and mouthfeel... The overall result is a slightly spicy, somewhat unique pumpkin ale... Enjoyable enough, but not something I would recommend nor seek out again...

Poured from the 750 ml bottle into an SA glass.

The appearance is a nice brown fall beer colour. Lots of carbonation bubbles but minimal head with slight lacing.
Smell is a bit weak for a pumpkin beer, but I think it's intended that way here. Not unpleasant.
I like the choice of saison yeast very much, it's different in a good way. If only the cinnamon was dialed back a bit, this would be a contender.
Too light for the style, but okay.
A worthy brewery that was too free with the cinnamon this time, I think.
This is not a bad beer, worth a try if you want a different take on pumpkin beer.
