Thanks to mikereaser I have the opportunity to taste a 2008 aside a 2007.
Scores are based on the 2008.
Pours a dark black with ruby highlights. Almost 2 fingers of tan head. It falls pretty quickly, leaving a ring of frilly lacy.
Aroma is roasted malt with strong perfume, floral notes.
Flavor starts with light sweetness, then a good hop bitterness comes forth. Roasted joins in the finish.
Moderate body with a nice level of carbonation, enough to make it lively but not too fizzy.
A few shades lighter, dark brown with burnished copper highlights. No head, no lace.
Aroma has a much lighter floral note, which lets the roast come through more.
Flavor is generally flatter than the fresh. Less bitterness lets the sweetness come out, but it is sort of generic. Roast character is still pretty strong and a little of the perfume note on the finish. A subdued but building bitterness in the finish.
Body is similar to 2008, as well as carbonation.
Well, quite a little experiment. At first I prefer the 2007, but as they warm the hops in the 2008 step down a notch and it becomes more balanced. Still a little heavy in the perfume note for me.
