Pour- A Semi Transparent deep mahogany brown with a handsome tan froth of about 2 fingers. Rather pretty but the transparency suggests it won't be a heavyweight contender.
Aroma - Mostly dark malty thing. Not much scent of hops but some coffess and dark fruit hints.
Flavor - Relative to Black Butte or Ed Fitz,a bit less robust. A pleasent coffee with a subtle hopped aftertaste to carry the dark coffee to a mildly bitter roast finish, all in all the sweet and bitter, neither goes very far. Generally tasty though much less complex + intense than an Ed Fitz.
Mouth A bit thin. Not a shock as it's not a full opaque black and in no other way is of average "heft" for a Porter. Interesting...yesterday I had a Boffo Brown and Boffo could better pass as a Porter while this more is the texture and tastes of a Brown, with a more coffee-ish flavor. Despite making a fine head, carbonation is fine and barely adequate.
Drinkability? The tradeoff in this being a Porter-Lite is that it goes down easy. I'd say it's not as wet as some Doppelbocks but it's not far from a few of them. Tough to rate this as it is such a tweener, and is tasty and easy to finish, yet it really lacks the beef, the balls, the second sip details of a Ed Fitzgerald,Black Butte,Fade To Black or Smuttynose.
