Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

For the third scratch beer, we delved into our old Belgian notes and decided to go big for a nice warming feeling when you drink this beer,” says John Trogner. “This unfiltered golden ale is 10.1% abv. It is spicy and quite dry with a hint of noble hops. The yeast is the real flavor in this beer and we used a different yeast strain than we use for The Mad Elf. This yeast creates that drier taste.

Poured a cloudy light amber with minimal head which faded fast. Nice unfiltered look. Specks of goodies throughout.

Smells faintly of banana, not much else.

Smooth, and thick feeling, and the alcohol made my mouth water. Not bad.

Tastes slightly boozy with the banana taste as expected. Strong banana aftertaste.

Left a good alcohol burn in the stomach. Thought it was an average beer. Not really for me.

Had a growler of this later, and the overall experience was much better, so all ratings went up a half point.

Big thanks goes out to t0rin0 for sharing this one upon my arrival into Cali. 2007 Vintage? This should be interesting... Served from bottle into a Firestone Walker sampler shaker. Poured a hazy yellow with a very minimal white head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark fruit, bananas, and alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark fruit, alcohol, bananas. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew for a going on 4 year old Tripel. Still had a pretty nice flavor and good aroma going on here. In my opinion it might be past its prime, but still drinking pretty well right now.

Release #3 in Tröegs Scratch series, celebrating their 10th Anniversary. A fresh growler fill on 8/4/07.

A: The ale has the soft hazy color of a weizen, a bit too cloudy for a tripel. The head never amounted to much in the glass and there is no sign that it existed it all beyond a thin white band.

S: The nose has a strong presence of coriander, some anise and candi sugars. The nose from a fresh growler is much nicer than the sample bottle that I a few weeks back. There the nose if full of the aromas that I'd expect from a tripel.

T: A peppery zest dominates flavor, creating a heat that is augmented by an alcohol warmth that lingers just under the surface of the beer. Candi sugars create a sweetness that sits nicely atop the malt body that is biscuity without getting in the way of things. The finish nicely brings together the candied and coriander flavors.

M: The mouthfeel is full of Belgian flavor, sweet with a pronounced peppery heat.

D: A nice blend of spices, the growler was well worth a second look. The abv seems high (but I can't confirm that), so a glass or two may be more than enough.

I have been waiting to try this beer and the rest of the available Scratch beers for that matter. My new found love for tripels has led me to this limited beer.I like how this was a recipe from before the brewery got its start. This is one of the higher abv. tripels Ive had ever.Poured into a St. Berny chalice.

Cloudy yellow/orange body with alot of yeasties floating around. No head but there is a small white ring and one small patch of head in my beer. The second pour produced a half finger head, not much lacing.

Notes of yeast and orange and some bubble gum.

Taste is lemon, orange, yeast, coriander and pepper and some bubble gum. Some hop flavor in the end of the taste. The flavors in this beer are spread aprt now they need some time to meld together.

The mouthfeel is easy drinking with a creamy body.I would like to see how this will age and see if the flavors tighten up any.

I think this beer is still very young but still good and I will look for a aged bottle.

My last scratch of the evening I figured I would save this one for last. Poured from the bottle at a decent temperature and served in a large wine glass, this one was consumed on 12/21/2008.

The pour was decent enough with a rich yellow color coming forward right away with lots of sediment and haze. Small head of white coming up over the top and settled down way too quickly, the whole while some light side glass lacing was taking place.

The aroma was way too light for me. Light banana and some light fruity yeast, but other then that nothing really here to impress me at all. Some nice grain aromas. The flavor was way too muted, no really character or full profile to it. The alcohol was well hidden, but that was about it, everything else was just kind of a mess. Still it was lightly drinkable and I guess it could have been worse. Overall I am not really sure what to make of this one. It was too light, not enough character and just a bland version of a triple. Needs more flavor.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a brilliant gold color, with lots of sediment. White fluffy head disappears rather quickly.

A bit of tartness in the nose, some spices and a bit yeasty. Soft floral notes seem to finish things off.

Pale malt, with some spicy and yeasty notes going on. Lots of solvent-like warming alcohol. A good deal of residual sweetness.

Full body, lower carbonation. I would like this a bit drier. Not bad, particularly from a US brewer.

Pours a nice looking golden colour with a slight haze to it and a big frothy sticky head that has good retention time and also leaves a nice amount of residue on the glass.

The aroma is sweet and candy-like, with some banana notes and a nice floral hop kick to it as well. Hops are not overbearing but are definitely more noticeable here than in your typical tripel. There's a bit of general yeast in the mix here as well.

The flavour is more of the same. Sweetness is a bit tones down here for more of a crisp, pilsner-like flavour in it's stead, but the fruit notes are still present as is the yeast flavour that helps to push a bit of spiciness in to the mix as well. Mouthfeel is light bodied with a bold crispness to it and a good amount of carbonation.

I liked this one and how it has been hopped up a bit but not so much that it's offensive. Overall, it's very true to the style but with a bit of a twist. No complaints for this tasty brew.

Pours a very hazy gold with minimal white head that dies quickly. Very little lacing. Smell is of yeast, sweet malt, clove, pepper and some vanilla. Tastes as it smells. Bready with yeast, clove and lots of dried fruit and fig with a little hops. Medium body with nice carbonation. A curveball from Troegs and I like it. Overall a delicious brew.

I have had this beer several time but I have yet to sit down alone with a bottle and contemplate it. I had it at fests twice and a tasting twice. Thanks Risser09 for sharing a growler at my place. I have yet to be extremely impressed with the Scratch three triple. It is sweet and to still seems young. I know Tröegs already waited to release this one. It was brewed before the scratch 2 but released after. It still needs time. I think the sweetness that comes off now as sugary will mellow into a more pleasant less cloying attribute in a year but the fact of the matter is there is not a whole lot of depth to the beer. The coriander is obvious along with vanilla and a gentle pepper nibble in the finish. And the alcohol makes itself known. It is a decent beer; but each time I just hope to find there was more to it than I happened to take notes on. I haven't found that yet. I hope to sit with a bottle and a an hour and report on a closer inspection.

Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!

had this at a tasting a little while back. To me, it was rancid, but noone else seemed to get that.

a - lemon yellow color, white head

s - malts, yeast, faint sweetness

t - YUCK! smooth at first, but then a harsh moldy hay flavor dominates. I can't drink this.

m - syrupy feel

overall - Obviously this has some age on it, and IMO its gone bad or at least way past its prime. Again, others at the tasting didn't thing it was bad.

12oz. bottle

Pours a hazy golden straw color with a small white head that disappears. Mild lacing on the glass.

Aroma is very bready and yeasty with corriander, a hint of vanilla and a slight peppery spiciness.

Tastes just like it smells. Malty sweet with big bready and yeasty flavors upfront followed by a fruitiness with plenty of corriander and mild vanilla tones. Mild pepper spiciness and hop bitterness just before the finish as a slight sweetness lingers. Gets a little boozy as it warms.

Big body. Decent carbonation.

Overall, another tasty brew in the scratch beer series. Not exactly to style, but that wasn't the point of these beers. If the sweetness was toned down, it would be even better.

12oz bottle obtained via Local BIF from RThomas436. Thanks for the opportunity. <Jeremy2002 = bad trader>

Poured into a Chimay chalice, formed a 1/4" off-white head above the slightly cloudy golden brew. Head is promptly down to a swirl, with average lacing. Aroma is earthy and tart. Taste starts sweet, spicy and lemony in the middle, earthy at the close. Mouthfeel and drinkability are both okay, but not real exciting. I don't think age done this one much good.

While not a classic tripel, this beer is superb. The aroma is wonderful - slightly funky with some tropical fruit notes and interesting spices.

Appearance - a beautiful beer, cloudy straw color, with lots of clusters of small bubbles.

Taste - I found the alcohol and candi sugar a little too prominent but still really enjoyed the flavor. Again, some fruit, coriander, and other spices present.

Mouthfeel - those little bubbles sure felt good. Great mouthfeel.

Drinkability - I wish that it had a little less alcohol, but this went down very easy. For me, two 12 ounce bottles of this would make a nice evening.

Overall, a really nice beer. I plan to get more.

Served in a flared pokal.

Thanks to the Central PA group from the Gang Bang BIF for this bottle!

And here beginneth the Troegs Scratch dash... This leg pours a cloudy straw topped by a half-finger of light off-white foam. The nose comprises wheat, honey, and butter. Hm... The taste holds notes of clove, black pepper, bad banana, light vanilla, something akin to grapefruit rind. The body is a light medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a finish that comes pretty close to being dry. Overall, it's pretty clear this beer has not aged very gracefully. I'm sure it was pretty good back in its day, but right now it's a shadow of its former self.

Thanks to Bobby for sharing this ancient Tripel.

A: The pour is a very turbid golden orange color with a thin white head forming a ring around the glass.

S: Lots of spice to it and intensely sweet. There's an almost meaty character to it, too. Fairly decent floral with lots of sugary notes and sort of oxidized.

T: This beer is pretty sweet. Caramel sauce, sugar, brown sugar, and fairly oxidized. There's some floral and maybe honey notes. Definitely old, but not bad.

M: The body is medium with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: Surprisingly decent for a three year old tripel. I probably wouldn't want to have this again, but good enough for the tick.

Also from a fresh growler shared At Phatz's Tasting - Poured Into A Pint Glass.

The beer pours a light yellow gold color, with minimal head retention and lacing. I don't get a lot on the nose, just a wisp of sweet malt. No off aromas. On the palate the beer is sweet with some noticeable heat from the alcohol in the finish. The beer is a bit one dimenional, with pleasant flavors of melon and cherry. The alcohol is pretty noticeable in the finish, and a number of folks at the tasting commented that it seemed as if this beer was a bit young.

This was an interesting beer, but it was a bit simple and not all that drinkable at the present time. I just think Troegs needs to tweak the recipe a bit, and perhaps give it a bit more aging before release. Nice effort.

Picked this bottle up at Capone's.

Scratch 3 pours a cloudy, light straw color with a small white head. Lacing is light.

The aroma is sweet and spicy...but mostly spicy. Pepper, coriander, cloves, yeast, vanilla, and a bit of fruit. I think the smell will improve with age,

The taste...that should improve with a bit more aging, also. Pepper, cloves, coriander, yeast, vanilla extract, fruity, and sugary. It's a little too sweet for a triple, imo.

Mouthfeel is nice and crisp with active carbonation. I didn't have any problem finishing this bottle, but I think I would hold onto the rest for a while if I had any more of them. I am glad to Troegs trying these new, different brews. I really think this Scratch beer series is a great idea.

A-Golden yellow with a this white head. Leaves a lot of lacing behind.

S-Belgian yeast with the typical clove, banana and spice. A slight waft of pepper?

T-Banana and clove with a hoppy bite in the back. Malt sweetness overtakes in the end.

M-Smooth and somewhat creamy. The alcohol beocmes present as the brew warms. Sweet sugary taste in the background.

D- A nice American interpretation of this style but a bit too sweet for my liking. Not that the beer is out of character it just doesnt fit into my style profile.

A: Looks like a slightly cloudy pilsner, a little more straw color than other trips. Very little head recedes quickly into a weak ring. No lacing at all.

S: Peppery and some yeast, as expected. Slightly stronger than others.

T: Same as smell. Slightly more boozy than other trips, also. I think I can also pick up some unexpected hops also. Slightly dry.

M: Zesty, peppery, good amount of carbonation. Slightly more crisp than typical tripels.

D: More of a sipping beer than other Troegs beers. Definately can feel the 10% abv. Another interesting take on a classic style.
