After a very recent tour of the Troegs Brewery, I decided to age the Mad Elf and enjoy a 22oz Troegenator tonight, served in my trusty "Samuel Adams" glass.
Appearance: Pours a light ruby color (when held to the light). Two fingers of a cream-colored head with small, tight CO2 bubbles.
Smell: Strong malty/bready scent with some hint of sweetness.
Taste: A Toasty/nutty flavor to start, with some spice to follow. I can taste the alcohol in the finish, but it certainly doesn't dominate the flavor (Labeled 8.2% ABV).
Mouthfeel: Medium-to-Full bodied and pretty damn smooth.
Drinkability: This is quite drinkable considering the strength. This is an easy drinking 22oz-er, but I wouldn't order too many of these in one sitting.
Overall: You can tell that the Bros at Troegs brew the beers that they enjoy - to the benefit of their customers! If you are fortunate to be able to venture to Harrisburg, you should definitely stop in for a Saturday tour. I also recommend picking up the locally, hand-crafted Trogenator ceramic drinking horns. It holds the full 22oz and the only downside is that you can't put it down once it's filled! :-D

Poured aggressively into a .5l glass.
A- Beautiful dark reddish brown with a rich off-white head, that slowly dissipates, and laces well.
S- This beer needs time to open up!
It's strong, give it time. Over time more ripe fruit, including banana as another reviewer wrote, along with caramel, malt, cinnamon, nuts, spice cupboard.
T- dark fruits & malt pre-dominate. cinnamon, and cupboard, mahogany, wet wood tones... like the smell, the taste blooms if you give it time. needs to warm & breathe.
M- Medium-heavy body, low carbonation. satisfying weight.
O- Very flavorful and complex beer. It's also a very drinkable doppelbock. Being in center of Pennsy German region, it makes sense that Troegs would trump this style!
The key is let it breathe, give it time. More and more complexity, ester, sweet flowers, with mahogany and pleasant alcohol emerges over time.
Would definitely recommend for winter sessions.

Appearence: clear brown, thick off shore head with nice retention.
Smell: refined yeast, a bit of sweetness. Not unpleasant but lacking.
Taste: some deep malt notes and a bit of hops and hints of fruit but the taste was heavily overpowered by alchohal.
Mouthfeel: medium carbonation, full body, not dry. Very filling.
Overall: for me the flavors were lacking, do that the most discernable tadte was alchohal, which isnt too pleasant, I cant see myself buying this again and I had higher hopes from this brewery.
