Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue X:
Clear, dark and tawny ... inviting if you are into strong dark lagers. Patchy lacing on the glass, a treat to watch it cling after each sip. Very clean malt aroma of lightly toasted Portuguese sweet bread with a ghost of browned apple within. Creaminess is dominant in the mouthfeel with a pinch of crispness, full bodied. The taste buds have a massive, dry malt wall of deep toasted grain to climb with each sip. Hops are on the side with some bitterness to move everything along. Suggestions of peppercorn and dried figs in the backdrop. Maltiness still sticks with the drying finish for the most part, even after the first initial wave of sweetness, which is great to experience compared to some of the other overly sweet bocks brewed in the US.
Believe the hype. This beer has garnered a cult status over the years, and it's a delicious beer that easily ranks within our top Doppelbocks worldwide.

Appearence: clear brown, thick off shore head with nice retention.
Smell: refined yeast, a bit of sweetness. Not unpleasant but lacking.
Taste: some deep malt notes and a bit of hops and hints of fruit but the taste was heavily overpowered by alchohal.
Mouthfeel: medium carbonation, full body, not dry. Very filling.
Overall: for me the flavors were lacking, do that the most discernable tadte was alchohal, which isnt too pleasant, I cant see myself buying this again and I had higher hopes from this brewery.
