Drank in May 2011. Served at 50'F
A- Deep Amber with a tan head that is almost brownish. Not too good of a head retention, it actually dissipated rather quickly.
S- Can't pull too much outta this after the first few seconds of opening the bottle and after the pour. Initially I got a lot of orange zest with some sticky caramel and slight molasses. Seems to have a breadyness to it as well with a tangy tart kinda smell to it as well.
T- Orange, sweet pineapple, and white grapfruit.Really great hop bill with good biterness. Very sweet, candied sugar and caramel are the centerpieces.
It also has a tartness to it that my friends and I describe as "the barleywine funk" some have it, others dont. I think its the molasses and darker fruits like dates and rasins but who knows, it isnt very pleasant bu tits certainly not overwhelming.
M- Awesome, everything a barleywine should be. Its god a light to medium carbonation, sticky and a good hop bitterness. The finish isnt dry at all despite the slight, slight heat and bite from the alcohol.
O- Very drinkable, awesome mouthfeel, and good hop bill but not a hop bomb like bigfoot. Its really balanced. Main complaint is that tart, tangyness that gives you a slightly uncomfortable taste mid sip. Cant wait to see how this develops although my guess would be that the tartness is going to come out a lot more.
