A - Poured this into my Mad Elf chalice. Pours 2 fingers of tan head that has a pretty good retention and leaves nice rings of lacing. The beer is a beautiful dark ruby red, almost a purple-ish brown color.
S - Lots of juicy citrus and piny hops combined with dark fruits like plum. The hops dominate definitely dominate the aroma though.
M - A medium bodied beer with an abundant amount of carbonation, although it doesn't spoil the beer.
T - The dark fruits hit first as well as a wood like flavor and make up most of the first half of the beer. Around the middle you get a good blast of hops, both floral and citrus, that linger into the finish mixing with a little bit of alcohol. Overall it does a pretty good job of hiding the alcohol in the finish, and only has a small bitterness to it. The finish is mostly clean.
Usually I'm not a big fan of barley wines, but this is a different beast. It's like a mixed monster 1/2 barley wine 1/2 imperial IPA, which makes a delicious combo. I'm aging another bottle for a year since this beer is supposed to transform as it ages and the hops mellow out. I'll update the review then.
