One of the first "big beers" I ever tried years ago, I finally re-visited this one for the first time in a while.
Pours dark ruby red with a creamy tan head. Decent retention and clumps of lacing on the glass.
A little bit of citrus hop character in the nose and an onslaught of caramel/toffee flavors along with dark fruits and a bit of vanilla. Almost liquer like with the sweetness and candied hop aroma.
Taste is not quite up to par with the nose as the sweetness dominates a bit too much. Citrus hops especially grapefruit are present up front along with a syrupy caramel presence. I get a lot of brown sugar, vanilla and raisin/fig character as well as this definitely leans more toward English barleywine than American. Hops are present, but malts shine. A little booze is evident on the back end. Again almost like a brandy with the fruity sweetness.
Thick and syrupy mouthfeel. Fruity sweet booze finish, but not over alcoholic. A bit on the sweet side overall, but there is some bitterness.
A tasty beer although one I'd recommend splitting as it's too overly sweet to take down a whole bottle myself. Even splitting it, 11 oz was more than enough. I've had this at various stages of its life and feel it's definitely best fresh as the sweetness/bitterness are the best ratio then.
