Just wrote a really intricate beer review for this beer but it got erased due to some sort of site problem but heres the quick re-write version:
Had this beer a while ago and remember it having insane hoppiness. As of write now, the beer is a few months old but not a full year yet and in some awkward stage unfortunately where cloying sweetness is present as well as strange hop bitterness and a ton of warming alcohol. Flavors include dark fruit bowl jam, toffee, caramel, and alcohol. Body seems full but then really thins out letting the alcohol come into play big time.
I obviously caught this beer at a weird moment in its ageing process and it will get a second chance, but for now...
Re-reviewing this beer with a fresh bottle. Deep brown color almost mahogany like in the center with auburn high lights. For a barley wine this beer has a pretty big sticky and well retaining off white head.
Subtle nose of roasted malts, caramel, piney, herbal, and earthy hops.
The beer itself comes in one concise sip rather then in layers or waves. Sweet caramel, bready malts, with dark fruits lingering underneath. Touch of licorice. Herbal and spicy hops along with sap covered piney hops. Very big and bitter yet balanced at the same time. Little bit of raisins and figs. Finish displays some alcoholic heat with a touch of bright citrus and grapefruit from the hops.
Much better fresh then with about a year of age on it. Glad I got the chance to revisit this one. Pretty good hopped up barley wine.
Oddly for a barley wine though I dont recommend cellaring it.
