-poured a very dark brown with a hue of crimson coming through. head was tan colored and not around for long
-some definite heat coming from the smell. caramel, dark fruit and a hint of roasted malts
-you get that good barley taste up front which then turns into a dark, caramel flavor. the finish is a bit of chocolate with some bitter hop flavor
-thick and smooth. feels very rich on the palate. you are left with a pretty intense bitter burn in the after taste from the hops, almost like a big IPA
-i really enjoyed this beer. i can see it being a good vertical as the hops calms down a bit and the other flavors become more pronounced. a fine, balanced example of an american barleywine
