Poured 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

A - Jet black in color with nearly no head present. Settles very quickly with no lacing. This one is a very tame pour.

S – Dark roasted malts and coffee are most abundant in the aroma. However, there is a bit of a floral sweetness that comes though as well.

T – Nutty dark roasted malts hit you up front along with an abundance of coffee flavoring. I did not taste any of the subtle floral notes that I had picked up in the nose. The bitterness from coffee lingers on your palate for a bit before completely fading. A nice balance between the sweetness from roasted malts and the coffee bitterness.

M – Very light in body. Borderline watery. IMHO, a heavier mouthfeel would be more desirable in this offering. Only a small amount of carbonation.

O – Overall, I liked the coffee flavor in this brew and that it was not cloyingly sweet. On the downside, it was a bit watery in mouthfeel. Just above a middle of the road rating on this offering for me. Glad I had the opportunity to try, but would not make this a regular.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #34 (Nov 2009):

Oats and coffee--breakfast beer?

Menacing darkness, though with a very inviting head on top. Ripe strawberry, fruity aroma clashes with fresh-ground coffee and some burnt grain. Modest level of carbonation provides ample smoothness; medium bodied. Chocolate and burnt sugar from the malt pair up nicely with the coffee influence. Juicy in the middle, and the hop bitterness comes in with a semi-harsh sting. Ghostlike, smoky char character from the malt in the drying finish.

Coffee flavors don't come to full fruition as the hops and roasted malt mute most of the coffee out. A decent Stout regardless.

Pours into my glass a nice deep black with a two finger head of creamy tan foam on top. Spotty lacing as it falls. Aromas is surprisingly hoppy upfront. Citric and floral along with a smooth roast from the malt. Caramel, chocolate and a good coffee aroma as well that is more in the background than I would have expected. Bit of creaminess as well.

First sip brings smooth, lightly roasted dark malts upfront with a mix of caramel, chocolate and oats. Hops move in with green herbal citrus and a light floral flavor as well. Brewed coffee is there, but again it is more a background accent. Finishes off with oatmeal smoothness, a bit of bitterness and lingering hops and roast.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth with good carbonation. Malt body is solid without being too heavy, making this one quite easy to put away. Overall, this ends up being more a hopped up oatmeal stout to me than a coffee oatmeal stout. I would have liked a stronger more vibrant coffee presence for a brew named Java Head....maybe Hop Java Head??

Pours an oil slick black with a thick mocha head. Love to see the head coloring with any high ABV coffee/chocolate stout. Ample lacing, disapaiting head to islands of co2.

I didnt believe the citrus hop aroma until I read it on the bottle. Sticky IPA hops, very strange for a stout. Im worried. Not much coffee/choclate, maybe some flake oat. Little ABV ... and to be honest, still getting co2. Wanted to give a 3.5 here, but the smell matches what they are trying to do so I cant fault them too much.

Creamy, medium roasted malt. Little citrus, dry roasted nut, biscuit. Missing any sort of coffee/espresso, maybe its coming out in the nut flavor.

Smooth. Sits really well, ABV is about perfect. Love the oatmeal creaminess. Quite a dry finish.

The citrus is very well balanced. I was really worried with the smell, but its balanace for the beer is great. Pretty amazing brew if you look at all the components that contribyte to its flavor. I can appreciate how folks wont like this interpretation of the style, but on the grounds for what they were shooting for, they have hit the mark.

On tap, served in an imperial pint glass that was chilled.
Dark brown, almost black in color. Cocoa colored head. A little bit of lace.
Roasted malt aroma, a little bit of coffee and a little bit of chocolate.
Pronounced espresso taste, some chocolate.
Medium-bodied.
Very nice.

Bomber, thanks to mntlover, hidden away in a dark and cool closet. Almost forgot I had this one but what better beverage for breakfast can one ask for than a coffee oatmeal stout. Pours dark, ebony, and opaque with a tall tan head that is sturdy and lasting. Thick patchy lace clings to the glass.

Aroma is freshly roasted Kenyan coffee beans, cocoa, and a hint of grassy hops.

Lovely mouthfeel, befitting of a quality oatmeal stout, is smooth and silky with a restrained moderate carbonation.

Taste has plenty of roasty notes of dark chocolate, some nuttiness, and a sharpness from the coffee beans. The oatmeal deftly smooths out the rough edges and some citrusy and grassy hops serve up a nice bitter component. Alcohol is tucked away nicely, but you notice it a few minutes after the finsih.

Ideal marriage of a coffee and oatmeal stout. Another solid offering from a brewery that has never disappointed me.

Very well constructed.

Bomber bottle, w/o freshness info. Pours quite near black, the head is dark khaki, slow to receede and then leaves copious lace. Dark malt and just a slight sniff of coffee/java in the nose. More dark malts, chalky chocolate and some grainy hops. Stale dark coffee note becomes more present as it warms. Not all that pleasant stuff, didn't really come together for me.

Bottled on 3/2010
Pours one finger's worth of tan fairly creamy head. Body is dark brown with some deep red around the edges. Lacing is good with a nice thick ring remaining for a while.

Smell is of sweet dark chocolate, some roasted barley, the coffee is there but faintly. Carmel and other sweet sticky malts. Some dark juicy, plum and rasins.

Tastes like chocolate and rum raisins. Some coffee at mid palate. Some floral tastes. Roasted barley, some sticky sweetness and a slight lingering hop bitterness on the finish.

Mouth feel is medium full, low carbonation. The finish is quite coating but not too much.

Overall this is very balanced and flavorful.
I'd get this again. $2.10 a single.

Appearance: black in color, 1/4 inch head

Smell: toasted malt, molasses, and a touch of cream

Taste: burnt malt, towards the end there is a taste of coffee, a small taste of cream at the finish. minimal hops

Mouthfeel: minimal carbonation, smooth sweet start followed by a bitter touch towards the end, with a sweet ending. Light for the style.

Drinkability: Very pleasant for a stout, but I did not get an overwhelming taste of coffee or oats. Both flavors are very subtle. This one was more refreshing than I have had in this style. I will have it again, but will not rush to do so.
