The transformation of Scratch #3-2007 to Splinter Gold has been a slow rest in oak wine barrels dosed with brettanomyces. During a two-year aging period the horsey flavors of the brett combined with the Westmalle yeast used during primary fermentation to create a complex blend of flavors. Bone-dry and 12% abv, Splinter Gold is highly carbonated.

Poured from a cork and caged 750ml bottle into a two DFH snifters. Shared with my future father-in-law.

A: Pours a nice light golden, straw color, with a massive near white, frothy head. The head clung to the walls of the glass and is retained throughout the duration of the beer.

S: The nose is full of many different flavors. It starts of with a funky Brett smell. Next a crisp citrus smell, lemons and maybe a bit of oranges, shines through the funk. At the end I can almost faintly detect a flower-like smell. There is also a pungent oak smell.

T: The taste is very similar to the nose. It starts off with a quick hit of Brett, moves to a sweetness (sweet apples and maybe the floweriness I was detecting in the nose), and finally to a citric flavor (lemons and oranges). The oak wine barrels definitely have a say in the flavor as well.

M: The cabonation is high, but works perfectly with all the flavors and higher alcohol content. Just as advertised; this beer is bone dry.

D: I went into this beer assuming that the Brett would dominate, just like most other beers I have had with this strain of yeast. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it balanced out all of the other flavors, especially the sweet ones. This is an impressive beer. Well done Troegs!

Big thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. This is a beer I have wanted to try for a long time.

The beer pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is extremely funky. I get a lot of brett funk as well as some bready malt, oak and orange citrus notes. A very inviting aroma.

The flavor is also very nice. I get a lot of tart lemons and oranges along with some oak and brett funk. The sourness is definitely present but I find it less sour than the Splinter Blue. Overall, I would say the beer is more funky than sour. The beer is very dry and easy to drink.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Not the typical POP! upon opening which has been typical with this beer, if reports do serve correctly. Only a mild "hmph" upon opening, and no gushing here to report.

Hazed dark golden and dark yellow in color with a small near-white head. Leaves the glass lined with stick. Pretty, though unremarkable.

Big notes of Brett funk--apparently this beer has evolved into this Brett monster over the years; it's a good thing I love me some Brett. Huge notes of earth and old, dirty stones (the depths of a well is what I'm picturing in my mind), with some hay and grass, and a bit of lemon, pear, and green apple character. Complex and powerful.

As with the aroma, the flavor is dominated by the delicious, complex, funky, evolving yeast: grass, barnyard, brick, and stones. Along with yeast is some mild lemon and sweet bread, with just a tiny bit of tartness, but this is one funky beer.

Medium in body with moderate carbonation. Perhaps would have been even better with high carbonation.

We want the funk, gotta have that funk, we need the funk, give up the funk!

Pours a hazy light golden color with a half-finger white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of tart lemon rind with good amounts of heavier pears and apricots. Also present are mild hints of vanilla and even lighter hints of funk.

Tastes good but not quite as robust as it smells. Light malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by good amounts of lemon and pear flavors. The fruits aren't nearly as tart as they are in the aroma which allows for the barrel influence to showcase itself more. Light vanilla flavors make their way out midway through the sip before giving way to equally light amounts of funk. The funk and fruit flavors carry through to a crisp ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with active carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have another.

Overall I was a bit let down by the taste after the intoxicating aroma but it's still a very nice beer, even more so as it hides the high ABV so well. Worth a shot.

750ml corked and caged bottle. 4oz. sample poured into a Founders snifter. Reviewed from notes. Shared by hoppymcgee at a tasting on 10/16/10.

A: Pours a 1 finger fine, white, fluffy head with moderate retention. Beer is a slightly cloudy yellowish-orange. Lacing is frothy and thick with appreciable cling.

S: Nose is a pleasantly surprising pineapple and citrus. Tropical fruits. Funk and cane sugar. Very sweet with little to no hint of tartness. Bretty. Complex but not the most aromatic.

T: Brett funkiness upfront with hints of cobweb and booze. Not sour in the least with MAYBE a slight tartness in the background that's barely detectable. Am I missing something? I didn't know this was going to be a Brett bomb. Hoppy and yeasty bitterness in the finish with a slight fruit sweetness before it dries out. Finishes funky with an aftertaste of barnyard and bark.

M: Medium bodied, good amount of carbonation. A bit harsh on the palate and abrasive and grainy going down. Finish is messy with an aftertaste that lingers. I'd rate this lower but given the high ABV, its very well executed.

D: Reading the other reviews of this beer, I can't help but wonder... is everyone else having the same thing I'm having? Splinter Gold is just... plain... its Bretty... its slightly sour... good balance... and somewhat unique...but its plain. Nothing that stands out and nothing that warrants praise. If you're looking for this one and haven't had the chance yet... don't bother. Totally not worth the trouble.

Pours a nice hazy golden-straw color with a huge white head that takes a dog's age to settle down.

Very nice bretty aroma, subtly funky with everyone's favorite smell, horseblanket, as well as a nice sweet malt background. Some light fruits as well.

Flavor is amazing and complex, yet light. Sweet pale malt, oak, Belgian yeast, brett, horseblanket/barnyard, green apple, lemon, and some other unripe fruits. I really like what they did here.

Medium-bodied with high carbonation. I can't believe this is 12%, as it has no real booziness at all.

Goes down incredibly easily for the ABV (if the 12% is real). A real joy to drink, and I kept going back for more. I'm really proud of my old hometown boys for coming out with a beer like this and mastering the great art of -bal aging.

Appearance - Hazy deep orange. Nice off white head.

Smell - Very malty. Minimal acetic acid. Stone fruits. Nice acidity to the nose.

Taste - Stone fruit. A little peachy. Sour. Lots of oak. Caramel. Estery.

Mouthful - Medium heavy for a sour. Moderate sourness.

Overall - Reminds me of a Cascade sour. Oaky with a nice stone fruit complexity.

750 ml corked and caged bottle into a couple of snifters. I had heard some stories about gushing with this one but I had it sufficiently chilled down enough so as not to produce any problems.

The beer pours a deep, hazy, golden orange, with a couple fingers of foamy bright-white colored head. Retention is fantastic here, pretty much holding at a sturdy ½ finger of froth that doesn't budge, throwing a huge creamy cascade of lacing that settles into thick swathes of foam. Just a great all around flare-up and look to this. The Brett in the aroma adds crispness to the nose that intermingles effortlessly with tart citrus flavors and spice. Sugary breads sit underneath with vinous notes and some earthy smelling tannic wood character. Man, this just overall has a fresh and crisp feel from the Brett that really is reminiscent of some of the best out there. I could have just stuck my nose in this all night.

The flow and balance of the flavors is somehow even better in the taste. The Brett flavor really isn't coming off as funky to me in the least, instead being much tarter and biting, blending in with zesty fruity notes of orange, lemon and green apples, as well as sugary tasting doughy bread. There is a touch of a vinous presence here but most of the barrel feel is coming out more as woody character that hangs in the back of the throat after each sip, lovingly lingering with leftover spicy notes in a dry feel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with an EXTREMELY smooth and easy carbonation in the mouth. This just has a tremendous feel from all of that tannic slickness, with this literally feeling like it slithers down the throat at times. And there is no way that this beer is 12%. There is just no way. I'm not getting one iota of heat or alcohol from this in any way, shape, or form. There is just some subtle warmth that starts to creep over my face as I work through the glass. Fantastic is all I have to say.

Fresh, tart, tangy, and oaky tasting, with a tremendous drinkibility, pretty much sums up this Splinter Series creation to a tee. The Brett addition and barrel-aging here had a delicate and deft touch to it that I was totally caught off guard by and I have to say that this honestly could easily hang with some of the better Barrel-Aged Wild Ales out there right now. If you have multiple bottles of this, I would definitely drink one now while the Brett is still fresh and then cellar one to see how the funk develops. I was very impressed by this effort and can't wait to see how Tröegs takes things from here.

A corked and caged 750 mL bottle from the December 16 release. Shared with Mike, Jen and ksak on Christmas.

A: The tripel is straw-colored, golden and radiant. It retains its clarity, even cold. The bottle opened with a pop and slowly overflowed, requiring fast action to save the precious liguid. That head was craggy, clinging in spades to my glass.

S: The nose is great, bretty and wild with a strong vinous presence. Citrusy lemon is the result of the brett. Even the strength of the tripel manages to come through, with sweet sharpness.

T: The wood stands out from the first sip, adding both strength and heft to the ale. The barrels have imparted a mild red wine intensity that sings with the tripel. Brett is omnipresent, adding a touch of funkiness with an excess of citric sharpness. The wine-like presence returns at the end of each sip, a nice going away present.

M: A barrel, some funk and a solid tripel, what else do you need? The wine barrel is prominent in the flavor with the brettanomyces adding a lively sharpness.

D: At 12%, this is not a beer to take lightly. Shared between 3-4 people, it was damned near perfect.

P-Troegs Brewery--Thanks to my wife for standing in line for 2 hours to get me this.


A- A nice pop of the cork and hiss of the beer and the beer starts to overflow. As i pour the head is huge and i have to stop and start. Very mountainous and fluffy. A hazy cloudy goldenrod yellow according to the wife. Maybe an apple juice like color.

S- wow the pungent aromas of fruity esters slaps you in the face. You have banana, apple and pear. The brett is pronounced as well. a nice oak wood smell rounds off the nose.

T- wow the flavor is out of this world. The pear and apple hits you right up front and then the brett and alcohol cover it up nicely. This is a perfect combination. A nice granny apple smith on the back end with wood oak taint as well. amazing!

M-highly carbonated like and sparkling apple cider. Smooth and bubbly and fruity in the mouth. every flavor is present and compliments each other so well.

D- somewhat dry but it has some wetness toit if that makes sense. Its a high abv beer but you couldnt tell from the initial downfall. I almost put 2/3rds of it down before i remembered the abv. it hits you all at once too.

Great beer one of the best i have ever had!

750 ml bottle split and poured into a Duvel tulip. 12% ABV, "Pour slow to not rouse the yeast and serve at 55°F in a chalice".

Huge thanks to alcstradamus for sharing this rare brew I didn't even know about until the tasting. Fantastic though!

A - Hazy goldenrod color with a dense off-white head. Decent retention but low lace left over on the glass. Good looking but definitely could be a little better. Acidity probably has a lot to do with it.

S - Very sour, tart aroma with tons of Brett barnyard funk and horseblanket. Some Belgian yeast pokes through in the back with light candi sugar. Very complex and inviting! A bit of lemon citrus comes through too.

T - In the flavor the tripel in this beer comes through more than the wild that the nose displays. Lots of crystal malt and candi sugar sweetness, Belgian yeast, and low spiciness. Wild Brett funk is secondary to the tripel flavor. Light woodiness on the finish.

M - Sweet and smooth medium-full body with a light, crisp carbonation crisp finish. Sour and tart as well but not over-the-top.

D - Good wild that blends the styles very nicely. The balance between the two was fantastic. I like this one a lot; it's smooth and tasty. Too bad it's so damn rare.

I was finally able to acquire a bottle of this. Had not had a drink all week so I cracked this one open tonight, cause well to be honest, it was a hell of a day and I needed to make a nice night. Served at cellar temp I poured it multiple times into a six ounce snifter, thought after the second pour my wife knocked over the bottle making me lose about 6-7 ounces, which fit with the rest of the day quite nicely. Enough rant more beer, as I finished the last glass on 04/08/2010.

The pour was huge, big and better then I ever could have hoped for with a big golden amber color and a huge head of white that reached a height of nearly three inches before settling down and coating the entire inside of the glass with sticky white lacing and a thick covering of white that remained on top all the way through. Got much cloudier the further into the bottle you went.

Aroma is loaded with fruit, pears are dominant, as much as you would say blueberries are in blabaer, this has the most pronounced pear aroma and flavor I have ever come across. Light tartness builds as it comes up to room temperature giving you that horse funk you are looking for but keeping it light with tons of light grain and bready notes back building the pear and now light sour apple. Each sip seems to get even more complex then the one before. Rich pear and apple flavors, light sour notes, hints of grass and liht bready malts, complex as hell. Perfect carbonation, light, bubbly, full enough to coat the tonue, perfectly done with the abv so well hidden I thought it was 8 percent.

Overall damn near perfect. I expected great things but not this great. Seriously one of the best best things i have had in a while. Near perfection for the style.

Cloudy gold, highly carbonated with a big rocky white cap. The head retains very well, making for a pretty swanky looking beer.

The aroma is rich with barnyard-like must, hay, pears, green apples and a bit of tropical fruit. The brettanomyces aroma is outstanding, rife with funk, mustiness and fruit. Pear-like esters become especially prominent as it warms.

Light fruity sweetness coats the palate first, but it's quickly overcome by strong bretty funk and complex fruit character. Flavors of pear, apple, pineapple and lemon peel segue into a peppery, tannic, faintly boozy finish. The mouthfeel is crisp and dry, carbonation is at an upper level and there's little indication that this is 12%. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and it's pretty unique to boot. Hope to try this again.

Thanks to treyrab for bringing this bottle to kick off the tasting. This was a big want of mine, and I am happy I got to try it.

The pour produces a hazy dirty straw colored liquid with a thick creamy head. This, like all of the Splinter series, is very carbonated. Thick and sticky bands of lace stick to the sides of the glass. This looks like part tripel and part saison...

The aroma is in line with the prediction from the appearance. Fruity, funky and dry, the nose also brings white vinous notes and grassy bretty characteristics. The flavor also translates similarly, as the grassy funk and white wine are again contributors. Caramel and butterscotch in the mid-palate give way to some sawdusty oxidation and boozy warmth from the 12% alcohol content.

Very highly carbonated with a medium body, the carbonation does lighten it up a bit. It should be interesting to see how this ages, given the hints of oxidation that we noticed in the finish.

Batch #2, 10.8% ABV

A: Hazy golden copper colored beer, certainly along the lines of what you'd expect for a barrel aged Tripel base beer. Moderate head which settled out nicely considering the loud pop from the cork. Minor lacing and a decent retention ring around the outside.

S: Funk, sweet pale malt, citrus, bread, lemon, oak and huge chardonnay characteristics. Lots of white wine notes definitely stuck with the beer.

T: Up front the brett has done some nice things to this beer. Classic Tripel-like alcohol notes are here along with some tartness and funk. Sweet bready malts along with citrus. Well balanced, very crisp and dry -- drinks like a nice oaky white wine.

M: Highly active carbonation but it's good for what I like in the style. Dry, woody and bubbly on the palate. Nice mouth feel.

To be honest, this was awesome. The brett worked wonders on this along with perhaps the Westmalle strain they used for bottle conditioning. I'm eager to see how this one develops over time. Well worth your effort to taste.

I had this at the Troegs brewery. Batch #2 poured from the bottle into a goblet.

The beer pours a cloudy amber color with a golden hue. There is a half finger of fluffy off white head. The smell is tart up front and reminds me a bit of vinegar. I'm also getting a strong sweetness along with some white wine and a lot of woody notes. The taste follows from the smell, but it's a bit more complex. Lots of woody characteristics from the barrel. Funky and tart with a sweetness that balances it out a bit. I'm also getting some spice from the yeast along with white wine and a tropical fruit note. There are a lot of large bubbles and the finish is extremely dry.

Poured a corked and cage wine bottle into two pint glasses. One for me and one for my girlfriend who stood in that cold ass line with me.

Appearance: A bit of a gusher right out of the bottle. Poured with a huge 2+ white foamy head. Head receded just slightly and a 1 - 1.5 finger head lasted the whole time with big time lacing down the sides of the glass. Beer was a light golden sort of straw color. Lots of car bubbles flowing upward from the bottom of the glass.

Smell: Funky. Definitely a wet horse blanket and hay aroma up front. Masked beneath is some citrus mixed with some orange, some white apple, and a little bit of oak which lends some sweetness. The Triple comes through just fine but the funk is definitely there.

Taste: Follows the aroma pretty evenly. Funky up front followed by a lot of citrus, some orange, some floral tones, and an underlying oak sweetness. Has a bit of a wine character to it courtesy of the oak wine barrels. Brett comes back around in the finish for a semi funky, semi sweet finish.

Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated, but it's a welcome thing. Gives the beer a lighter feel to it and cuts through the sweetness a bit. Finish is dry, very dry. Not sure where everybody got that this beer is 12% alcohol content, but it certainly doesn't taste it.

Drinkability: Very high. The brett is not overpowering, the sweetness is the perfect counterbalance, the fruitiness of the triple is still there, the carbonation is perfect and it's light enough in body that finishing the bottle is no problem.

Troegs, you outdid yourself. The only thing that could make this better is if it was sour. But nonetheless, phenomenal beer.

Pours an extremely murky golden orange with two fingers of head and decent lacing.

The aroma is acidic with notes of lemon zest, peach cobbler, sunflower, earth, heavy oak, saran wrap, walnut shell...jesus christ it is insanely complex and amazing to breathe in

The flavor is a bit lighter and less complex than the nose led me to believe. Nonetheless, still tasty. Heavy oak, Belgian spiciness...the base beer Tripel really shows through. Not much sourness or funk at all despite the wild yeast. After swirling the glass a lot and letting this open up, lots of very subtle complexities peek through and keep me reaching for the glass trying to identify them. But I fail.

The body is medium and carbonation is high yet soft...not prickly or sharp which is a positive

Overall this is a very solid wild beer. Oddly, more sourness might have actually increased the drinkability for me since I felt perhaps it was missing one element to be truly great. Definitely one of the best Tripels I've ever had, but not one of the best Wild Ale's.

Split the bottle with stakem on 3/4/10. Thank you for standing in line to buy the bottle while I took my final.

Bottle was a pain to open, no pressure and the cork seemed to be longer than normal.

Crystal golden yellow color. Big white to cream colored foam that is composed of many visible bubbles, continuous release of carbonation. Nice thick lacing.

Musty cellar smell w/ noticeable bret scents. Also, crisp belgian yeast notes and subtle wood hints in the nose.

Very complex flavor. It starts out with light citrus hints of a belgian white and base flavors of a triple. Also. plenty of bret funk in the start. Green apple and pear notes are also evident as well as subtle wood notes. The finish shows some alcohol hints and some warming. Very dry from beginning to end.

The mouthfeel was very smooth and round and seems to get rounder as the beer rests. Great bubbly effervescent mouth feel.

Had a second glass 2 hrs after opening at room temp. Becomes even rounder and smoother and the pear flavor becomes more apparent.

Opened at a recent tasting with bmanning.

What a gusher this one was! Over the top foaminess after a lengthy battle to remove the cork. After filling cups with the initial foam burst so as to not waste any, this poured a brilliant gold with a slightly peachy hue alongside a mountainous bone-white head and beautifully-ringed lacing as it went down. The initial aroma was pure Brett goodness with some spice, citrus, oak, and hints of sweetness. Definitely funky.

The taste was very, very nice--initial Brett funk, which eventually melded quite well with all the other flavors, but definitely never subsided. Other flavors included oak, spice, green apple, citrus, and a bit of dry white wine. This all created a solid mouthfeel, with a spicy bone-dry feeling without too much of an alcohol presence. Drinkability was excellent--this one only got better as it warmed a bit, and was just an all-around phenomenal brew. Cheers to Troegs.

pours hazy golden orange with a huge white head. the head drops fairly fast and leaves lots of lace.

aroma is good. smells like a tripel or belgian ipa. corriander and belgian yeasty spice with some light hopping. bit of citrusy american hops.

taste is great. a lot like the aroma. no real sour character here. reminds me of a slightly sweet tripel or belgian ipa. white bread and cracker. bit of biscuit. light herbal character. bit of citrusy american hops.

mouthfeel is good. medium body with a pretty dry hoppy finish. medium carbonation level.

drinkability is great. great balance, hiding most of its alcohol.

A - A very opaque golden color. Poured with a nice big head that dissipated to an uneven ring.

S - Very odd smelling beer, although by odd I don't mean bad. Has some definate sour notes to it, like an American Wild, but a bit more bready. Also smells like someone dumped a bunch of yogurt into it, very unique.

T - A little bit tart, with notes of oak, vanilla, and some sort of fruit, possibly pears, apples, and some peaches. A nice bit of funk, and that yogurt comes through for me, can't tell if it's just an overpowering smell or if it's coming in through the mouth as well. Something new for certain with this beer.

M - A medium bodied beer that goes down very smooth, quite creamy.

D - High marks here, I didn't get any alcohol on this and it is easy to down. A bit dangerous at 12%.

I think this is a good, not great beer, but quite overhyped. Unfortunately my low relative review will probably be seen as trashing the beer, which is not the case. I like it, and would drink it again, but I do not find it world class, even though it is a very interesting beer.

Sampling a cellar temp bottle that is a few years old. Thanks to my brother Brian for getting me this as a Christmas present.
The beer pours a cloudy gold color with some tan sediment suspended in the pour. Bleached white head of .5 cm sticks around to a sturdy surface layer.
Aroma is apricots, musty blankets and dry Brett dominance.
First sip reveals an average to lighter body with fine tingly carbonation.

Flavor is briefly sweet fruitiness with citrus notes and apricot but rolls to musty dry notes and some cracked black pepper notes. I also get warm booze on the finish and amazingly dry palate after each swallow.
Very drinkable enjoyable brew. Glad to have had a the chance to consume.

750mL poured into Chimay chalice.

A- Pours a nice hazy golden with a finger's worth of head. No lacing left behind and just a small amount of light is let through.

S- Super complex. Some nice mild yeast and sour grapes. Just a tad bit of funk on the tail end. Maybe just a little bit of graham cracker rounds it out.

T- Brett, wild yeast and Belgian yeast. A lot of the Belgian tripel characteristics are present. Sour grapes and maybe some sparkling wine. Just a little bit of funk as well. The 12% is nowhere to be found.

M- Medium bodied that has good spritzy carbonation. Just a little dry on the finish.

D- Overall a pretty dang good beer. Dry on the finish and deeply complex. It doesn't get too sweet and there is a good balance between the tripel and the wild. A winner from Troegs for sure.
