12 oz bottle courtesy of cmurren25, thanks Chad! Pours a hazed orange color with a very large, cream-colored head. Retention is excellent, so is the lace.

Nose is toasty and hoppy with a decent amount of sweetness detectable. Hop varietals seem to be similar to those used in Hopback and NN. Smells more like a maibock with the toast and bright hops.

Taste leans toward a maibock as well, with a biting hop presence and moderate fruitiness. Toastiness is there, not much for caramel or a deep, richly sweet body. Still has some sweetness, but it is more candyish, like a Bit-O-Honey. Mouthfeel is welcomingly creamy, carbonation soft. If it is a maibock/blonde bock, it is one of the better ones I have had, although I will never be a huge fan of the style. This one strikes a nice balance and is full of flavor...what one would expect from Troegs!

Why can't they make more beers like this?
Oh yeah, lagers take up time and space.
Oh well.

Another beer from the cellar, this time a Scratch Beer from last year. Poured into a polka at 45 degree.

Appearance: A monster three finger head that has good retention. The head on the beer is foamy and cream with an ivory color. The head left some lacing on the glass. The color of the bee is a medium gold color with some medium copper hues. The clarity of the beer is cloudy with little yeast particles floating. Effervescence surrounds the beer with nice little bubbles. The color and head of the beer is very good for this style.

Nose: A very malty nose with toasty and bready notes. A mild hop aroma with some fruity esters. A subtle solvent aroma from the alcohol. It is similar to a pils except more character in the nose.

Taste: A very malty caramel, toasty, bready and yeast note are more pronoun on the palate. A moderate amount of floral character with some fruity esters. The alcohol spiciness is tamed by the time in the cellar.

The mouth feel of the beer is dry carbonated and coating.

Overall: The body of the beer is medium, with a medium finish. This beer is just okay, nothing about it really stands out nor is it the best of this style. On the other hand it is not a bad beer either.

Served in a flared pokal.

Thanks to the Central PA group from the Gang Bang BIF for this bottle!

The Scratch Beer Dash rounds another turn. This leg pours a hazy pale amber topped by a finger of dirty white foam. The nose comprises light buttery biscuits, caramel, and light banana. The taste holds notes of caramel, buttery biscuits, and light mandarin orange. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda grainy feel. Overall, a decent bock, nothing special, nothing offensive, but generally good.

Poured into a Town Hall Brewery globe on August 11th 2011.

Pours a very beautiful honey color with hues of amber and red. Head is huge and then leaves no lacing. I wish this had more lacing but other then that its spot on.

Smell is of sweet malts of course and then a lot of lemon peel. Smells great.

Taste is... Wow so sweet! Tons of honey sweetness and then some hop citrus but holy crap is that sweet. Great taste even after several months of being sent to me the citrus balances. I wish I had it fresh.

Mouthfeel is medium. The tangy taste is present on the end of the pallet but its a great weight.

Overall this is an excellent. Oh so sweet and tasty for the style. Great job.

Poured into a pokal. Thanks to Deuane for sending Tröegs goodness my way. It's been a while since this came out, but the bottle has been in my fridge since I got it. Unfortunately, I'm trying this much later than I would have liked to.

The pour is a golden orange. A little more than a finger of dense white foam retains well and sticks very nicely.

The smell is mostly sweet, like honey and oranges. There's some bready malt. I imagine the sweet orange scent is what remains of a former citric hop aroma. At this point, it's a lot of bread and fruit.

The flavor follows, although there is a very light, soft hop bitterness that survived that does a little to balance out the sweetness. There's also a spicy, peppery kind of flavor.

Medium body. It's certainly bubbly, but not too much. Noticeable alcohol in the finish, but that's to be expected. Not the easiest drinker, but there are some nice flavors. I wish I could have tried this fresh, but I don't think time ruined it. It's still tasty, which I've come to expect from Tröegs.

Poured into a snifter. Pours a hazy orange/deep golden with a fizzy white head of about two fingers. Head drops very quickly. Leaves a mere wisp of foam and spotty lacing.

Aromas of sweet malt and citrus hops.

First sip is caramel malt sweetness with just enough citrus hop bitterness for balance, with a lean toward the malt. Some apple hard candy sweetness lingers.

Mouthfeel is slightly astringent, medium bodied, fizzy carbonation.

Overall a decent effort. But this may be past its prime, feels a little overcarbonated, but still very tasty.

Thanks to Bobby for another Scratch tick.

A: The pour is a clear golden color with a big white head to go with it.

S: Quite sweet with lots of bread and fruit. I get quite a bit of white grape out of the nose, and maybe some plums, too. A light bit of citrus and floral hop notes are present as well.

T: Very, very sweet, almost like a Belgian beer with the sugary nature of it. Bread and honey are there, too. Some floral hops are present and the white grape character is there again, particularly on the finish.

M: The body is medium with a moderate to high level of carbonation.

D: Quite sweet, but pretty decent overall.

12 ounce bottle I found in my refrigerator from a recent trip to PA. Poured into a standard pint glass.

A: Medium to deep amber color, with a thick creamy white head that leaves lots of lacing.

S: Picked up some grassy hop aromas along with some honey and bread flavors. Also picking up some earthy tobacco smells as well.

T: A little sweet and peppery notes up front before some bitter hops takes over in the middle. Lots of bready malt flavors throughout to balance things up. Very nice.

M: Medium bodied, well carbonated.

D: This beer has done well sitting for 6 months -- I don't recall enjoying it as much as I when I first got it. Nice sipping beer on a cold winter night (like tonight) or would go well with a hearty stew.

12oz bottle poured into a standard pint.

A - Pours deep copper orange with a one finger light tan head leaving webs of light lacing down the glass.

S - Fairly heavy, bready, biscuit malts dominate with some nice floral citrus hops and some herbal spices offering a balance of sorts. A touch of caramel sweetness is a nice addition as it helps break up some of the other, heavier, aroma's.

T - Some sweetness up front is blended well into the doughy feel. The bright citric hops from the nose seem to be fading a bit but are still very much present, albeit in a more earthy tone. Malt is over the top chewy. Spices are prominent but not overpowering. Very nicely balanced.

M - Heavy body and medium flavor with moderate carbonation. Feel is very chewy and it tires the mouth over the course of the glass.

D - Very high. I really liked this one, altho is was even better on-tap. Troegs really seems to have a firm grasp on how to make excellent bock beers.

Thanks to gamanley for this one! Review from notes (12/5)

A: Pours hazy golden color with a large head which dissipated slowly to a small layer of foam on top. Nice lacing.

S: Upfront I got a really nice apple aroma and then a lot biscuity malts. A slight hop kick as well.

T: Hoppier than expected based on the aroma. Similar to the nose with the apple and biscuity malts. Has a nice sweet finish.

M/D: Medium bodied, very crisp. Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. Would love for Troegs to make this one full time.

Chilled bottle into a glass, courtesy of dabecassis, who left it at largadeer's place (it was then re-gifted to me). Thanks Dabe.

A: Pours a turbid, glowing burnt orange body. Quite beautiful. The head is magnificent, rising to three fingers in height, retaining well, and leaving tons of sticky lace down the sides of the tulip. I normally like my beers clear and filtered, but this is just beautiful.

S: Honey, raisin, multi-grain bread (well, toast really). It has an earthy, citrusy hop profile with a mild spice note. Seems good for the style, if a tad sweet.

T: Definitely on the sweet side; it's not cloying, but I'm just remarking on it. I can't shake the honey comparison; the combination of sweetness and spice reminds me of the organic stuff I put in my oatmeal. Raisins and toasted multi-grain bread are also found here. The hops are less citrusy than the nose implied, with more traditional Noble flavors of earth and grass, with a light pepper taste.

M: Maltier and heavier than I expected for the style, but it's also hoppier to make up for it. It has some lingering earthiness that rounds out the beer nicely.

D: This was a total pleasure to drink, and I'd love to get more of it. For the style I'd argue it's a little underattenuated, but as a beer, it's delicious.

12 oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass. No date or info on the bottle.

Thanks to Chaney for this awesome beer!

A - Floaties are visible through the bottle and make this beer incredibly cloudy when poured. It's a beautiful tangerine orange color with yellow highlights though. Topped by a brilliant bone-colored head that sparkles like a fresh snow fall, it's everlasting and lace-giving as well. Beautiful.

S - A drizzle of honey and caramel dresses up the lightly toasted malts. Biscuity in the nose, there is a lightly hoppy aroma on the finish. Subtle floral notes add to the mild raisin bread I get from this.

T - Hints of mandarin orange citrus and lemon drop give the bready malt flavor a great distinctive and complex profile. The honey returns for an encore with the caramel but is much stronger in the flavor. Lightly hoppy finish with very subdued resin notes.

M - Medium-bodied and soft with a smooth texture and semi-crisp finish. There is a suggestion of higher-than-usual alcohol with a light warmth and solvent presence through retro nasal breathing.

D - That mandarin orange is totally in there (not saying it's actually used) and I love it. The light citrus hint really spices up the malty beer nicely. I wasn't sure what to expect with this one but I think it really turned out nice!
