*Edit: Had it again, this time a little better in the flavor department. Bumped taste from 3.0 to 3.5. All else stands. 1/19/08
My first Troegs beer, this one made the trip back from Wexford PA to my hometown in SC. Quite the trip to wet my whistle -- let's see what she's got...
I decide to use my spif Sam Adams glass for this one, and the resulting fizzy red-caramel beer is quite attractive, sporting a small tight white head that leaves some lacing behind. Active carbonation makes this fun to hold to the light and look at, if you're in to that sort of thing.
This beer smells wonderful. A near perfect blend of sweet toasted malt and citrus hops teases my nose, with a hint of acid hop "heat" in there to keep things interesting. It's bold and fresh. I don't know if I've smelled a better Amber (if that is what this beer really is...). High points here.
The flavor doesn't quite live up to the magnificence promised in the nose. A lightly fizzy, watery mouthfeel offers up a hoppy red (think of Rogue American Amber here) that boasts a nice mildly sweet bready / biscuity taste underneath some well-blended grapefruit and sappy hops. Neither flavor overpowers the other, but there's an odd and unwelcome vague sourness in the finish as well as a hint of vegetables that doesn't go over well for me. It's a pity, because this beer is quite drinkable otherwise.
The finish is fairly dry and bitter, and if I exhale through my mouth I catch a hint of that cooked corn flavor -- just a tad mind you, but I'm sensitive to it, alas.
Overall, Hopback is a pretty solid beer and one that's quite drinkable, but it stumbles in the taste department. I want to try this beer again; perhaps the 12 hour car ride didn't help things...
