It was the scratch beer festival night! i had spent a good deal of time collecting these and finally tracked down the last of what i needed and put them all down in a massive tasting. Split with my brother in law and his buddy on 5/6, these were all split into 6 ounce samplers.
Poured a very clear amber with a decent sized frothy white head on top and a good two inches of lace. There was some nice streams of carbonation coming up from the bottom. Decent retention left behind some nice side glass lace.
Aroma was kinda light. Light floral hops dominating, but nothing really standing out or pungent about it. Seemed to be a bit weak here. Light grapefruit and pineapple with a bit of a grass like thrown in as well. the flavor was decent, nothing really standig out here again. Lots of grapefruit like hop flavors, very sharp and crisp without the really sugary deep resin notes. Light grain and grass like finish to it. Very light bodied with a good amount of carbonation. This was definitly one that was easy to drink and I had no issue really with the feel of it. Very nice session ale, and the profile was light enough that you could easily put down more then a few in a sitting.

On tap @ the Winking Lizard. Mike Watters from Troegs was nice enough to bring us out a few kegs, namely the Scratch IPA series (37-40) for a nice little tasting event. Thanks for hooking this up, and thanks to John and Kev for hosting!
Scratch #38 uses Centennial and Chinook.
All of these beers look damn good, with excellent color, clarity and head retention. They are all a golden caramel color and have great white head and lace.
In the taste and smell, this one stood out with characteristics reminiscent of citrus and flowers.
The mouthfeel is great, with just enough malt to avoid wateriness and excellent carbonation levels.
Comparison to #37-#40: This was a nice step in-between the earthiness of Scratch #37 and the citrus blitz of Scratch #39. Perfectly situated in the lineup, this featured some nice Centennial hop flavors that anyone who likes Bell’s Two Hearted can identify. The flowery and perfume elements were countered by the Chinook’s deeper bitterness. This beer wasn’t my favorite, but the expression of scents and flavors was enjoyable.

Review from notes taken on December 6th, 2010. Pulled into a pint glass for $5.75.
A: An extremely long lasting, bright white sudsy head literally crawls up the side of the glass. The body is pristinely clear and light copper in color. Moderate lacing.
S: Ridiculously fresh smelling with an abundance of hop aromas ranging from citrus to perfume. Grapefruit and orange dominate the hop bill. The malts brings about notes of bread and crackers. The nose is powerful and each aroma is highly concentrated. Somewhat soapy yeast contribution.
T: The orange citrus flavor takes over as the grapefruit recedes on the palate. Long flavor, lightly sweet, with above average bitterness. The alcohol is well concealed but present enough to know that you're drinking a fairly substantial IPA.
M: A gentle carbonation enhances the creamy texture and allows the medium-full body to be appreciated even more.
O: #38 is a solid IPA and marginally better than #37. Still, I'm hoping for better things to come in the remainder of the series. It's interesting to note that the cask ratings are much more consistent (and consistently higher) than the bottle and draft reviews. Regrettably, cask was the only serving type I was able to try, but it seems that a cask serving presented this beer at its best.

Had this beer at a recent tasting, (thanks Skuter) split between he and I.
Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Bruery tulip glass.
A: Super clear at first, initially a straw yellow with a golden hue, but after it settled, had a little haze. Very little head, light lacing, settled to just a ring of bubbles.
S: Citrus, orange peel, a bit of pine.
T: Mirror's the nose, with some light grapefruit notes, orange peel, and sweet malt.
M: Crisp, dry, lightly carbonated.
O: A bit average to be honest, nothing really stood out in the beer, between Troegs IPA, and just the style of an IPA. Forgettable.

Had this along with the #37, as well, thanks to Chaney
This pours a deeper orange amber, fluffy white to off white head. Floral nose with some citrus (lemon and grapefruit). Sticky lacing as well. Taste is sweeter than the 37, perhaps a few too many residual sugars but this beer is at 7.7% so who knows. A little sticky mouthfeel due to the sugars and a touch hot from the alcohol. Just an alright beer, nothing to search out or wish they put into regular production.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip.
Appearance: Out of the bottle, this has a cloudy caramel color with a flash of amber in the center and tangerine on the edges. Particulate yeast particles float throughout. A fluffy off-white head rests gently on top, fading to a ring and a light film.
Smell: Caramelized grapefruit, some herbal hop presence, but the aroma is fairly understated. An unpleasant booziness surrounds the other aromas.
Taste: The toasted caramel malt starts strong but does not last very long, leaving only the caramel sweetness to blend with the citrus hops. A candied citrus taste exists along with a boozy flavor. At 7.7%, I would expect this to be more hidden. This is mostly underwhelming.
Mouthfeel: Soft creaminess, light to medium carbonation, with a medium to full body.
Drinkability: I was not happy with how much booze poked through in an unpleasant way. Lots of alcohol and not much flavor is not a good combination.

Bottle courtesy of Chaney, another from DavoleBomb. Thanks guys!
A: This beer pours a crystal clear golden hue, with a half inch off off-white, foamy head that leaves some decent lacing upon the pint glass.
S: Hop and floral notes, subtle citrus.
T: Again, mostly floral with some citrus notes. Although the beer has a strong floral presence, it's not overdone to the point of astringency, as was the case with Scratch 37.
M: Medium-bodied with a slightly soapy feel. Alcohol presence is there, with a bit of a sharp bite, notably in the finish.
D: I enjoyed this much more than Scratch 37, though this beer still has considerable room for improvement.

Pours a orange non-hazy body with a moderate head with decent lacing.
damp earth, citrus, and fruity gum on the nose.
The flavors come through in that artificial orange starburst flavor that i don't enjoy that happens now and then. tastes like there is quite a bit of unfermented sugars in here.
I swear if i lick my lips i'm pulling sugar off them.
Sugary and sticky mouthfeel, i want my IPAs dry.

12oz bottle also provided by Sean so we could tick 36-38, poured into a perfect pint glass... Similar to the 37 this is an ugly ipa, light watery straw without good carbonation... The aroma is better, perhaps fresher, some light pine throughout, but not much beyond that. The taste is similar, light hops, ok, nothing to write home about. Skip this one as well.

IPA hopped with Centennial and Chinook
Appearance -- Pours a hazy orange hue with a slim sudsy white head. Wide bands of lacing. Nice.
Smell -- Very unique: lots of juicy fruits, biscuity malt, caramel, leafy hops, and a hint of peppery spice.
Taste -- Juicy fruit, leafy hops, and lots of spiciness. Malting conjures up biscuits and caramel. I am also picking up bubblegum - strange, I know. Malting is slightly sweet and gently caramelized. Hop bitterness is firm and resinous. Black pepper is perceptible toward the back end. Lingering flavors of juicy fruits, leafy hops, and pepper.
Mouthfeel -- Medium-bodied with moderate prickly carbonation. Feels crisp, but not sharp on the tongue. I don't know what Tröegs does, but they have the mouthfeel for these Scratch IPA's dialed in.
Drinkability -- Not too shabby. Somehow I don't like this one as much as I did Scratch 37, perhaps because the hop character in this is so much more...eclectic. Sort of all over the place, but not too bad.

Pours rich yellow with lasting three-fifths of an inch head. Carbonation bubbles were obvious and this was a highly carbonated beer. Floral hop aromas. Understated bitterness, pleasant, mild grapefruit. Lots of lace was noted later. Was worth trying once, drinkable, but a below average IPA with way above average alcohol.Smooth mouthfeel, other than the carbonation.

Thanks to Chaney for sending this in a monster box!
Poured to NB globe.
A: Good golden amber ale with beautiful white fluffy head (single finger) that dies out early on. Good scattered spots of laced foam.
S: Initially quite resiny. Bits of bubble gum, spice, grassy, very faint fine. Pretty decent balance, but a touch sweet.
T: Bitter-sweet. Plenty of hop flavor in here, a bit too much malt for a standard IPA. I can drink this, but I wouldn't pay more than $2 for it. I guessing it cost more being a brewery release...
M: Medium body with matching carb. Dry finish.
D: I have had this twice now, both times I have been left unmoved.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.
Pours a hazy light amber with a small white head. Nose is similar to #37 but a bit less sweet and malty, more balanced.
Taste is quite grainy and a bit harsh, much less smooth than 37, there is a hop flavor but it's more bitter than flavorful. Mouthfeel is decent, thick and creamy. Overall, much weaker than the previous scratch ipa.
