Troegs Perpetual IPA...is it an Imperial Pale Ale like the label states, or is this an American IPA? Or, perhaps, these one in the same? I don't know, and personally, I don't care. I am usually a stickler for style guidelines, but these 2 "styles" are conceptually the same.
Pouring this into my chalice, we get a solid and creamy white finger of head on top of this clear golden body. The head is really tight and has a great creamy texture I can tell right from the look of it. Lacing coats the glass...geez, talk about hops.
Smells hoppy. Understatement. This beer reeks of ripe tropical fruits and pine sap. I can tell there is a little sweetness behind everything, which is good and helps the fruitiness 'pop' a little more. Also, with all the hops present, we'll need something to back it all up with.
Flavor up front is full of notes of sweet mango and delicious hops. Bitter on the back end, but nothing that is overwhelming. Balanced fairly well, though the alcohol does come through more than I really like. However, the phenolics help with the tropical fruit characteristics. At 7.5%, this is pushing into Imperial IPA territory. There I go with the styles again...
Mouthfeel is super smooth and creamy, not like dry stout smooth, but as about as creamy as it gets for CO2 beers... The carbonation is really fine and leaves this beer feeling very silky and soft. Full bodied beer here for sure!
Overall? Thank you Troegs for making an IPA that stands up to those pesky West Coast IPA's...seriously, this has what every hophead is looking for. Real shame that this is a limited release only. Hopefully it is "limited release" like Flying Mouflan was "Limited Release." Glad I bought a case of these bombers...
