On tap at Troegs on 8/15/11.
A - Slightly hazy golden honey liquid with about half a finger of bubbly white foam on top that settled into a patchy retention, leaving some stringy lacing around the glass.
S - Bold hop nose with peppery notes, citrus rind, pine sap and leafy attributes, as well as a moderate alcohol fume after the liquid was given ample time to warm up.
T - Initial flavor delivers a pronounced hop character that is ultimately quite complex with dry, leafy bitterness as well as citrus rind and resinous piney notes. The malt backbone provides a hefty dose of sweetness, but doesn't detract from the hops at all and, instead, offers near perfect balance.
M - Medium bodied with a syrupy texture and plenty of hop oils in the mix. Carbonation is moderate yet the mouthfeel ultimately retains a slickness that I enjoy from hoppy ales. Finishes with a touch of lingering bitterness on the palate.
D - Perpetual IPA is easily better than all of the recent Scratch IPA offerings (save for #35, the fresh hop Harvest Ale). For all intents and purposes, this IS an IPA regardless of what they want to call it. I found the hop profile to be quite complex while the brew still retained a balanced flavor. I'm glad they decided to make this a regularly available beer!
