Picked up a six pack of Tröegs Perpetual IPA (label says "Imperial Pale Ale", not India Pale Ale...hmmm) this past weekend. Bottled on date says 7/6/12 on it, which makes me very happy; this is some very fresh hoppy ale–are there honestly many things better than that?

Appearance (4.5/5): Perpetual pours a wonderful straw-colored body with orange highlights and is slightly hazy. It is topped by a 2.5 finger, billowy, soft head of white foam. The resinous brew leaves behind plenty of sticky lacing behind as it diminishes. This is an outstanding looking beer; its appearance seems to indicate great things to come. I really like the colorful label on the bottle–very cool-looking.

Smell (4/5): I smell light floral and piney hops in the nose witha good does of bready malt evident as well. You can tell it has some stickiness to it. The nose on this beer is not as aggressively citric as most IPAs of this strength (7.5% ABV), though, and I see why the brewers at Tröegs labeled this an "Imperial Pale Ale" and not an American IPA as per the Beer Advocate classification. Whatever its classification, this is a good smelling hoppy beer for sure, though nothing incredible.

Taste (4.5/5): On first sip, one is hit both by aggressive, piney and citrus hops and bready malt at the same time. The malt really plays much more of a role than in your average West Coast IPA and draws plenty of attention to itself. The hops win out in the end and the grapefruit rind, orange peel, lightly spicy finish is quite bitter and QUITE impressive–perhaps the longest finish I've ever experienced in a hoppy ale. Wow. The nose did not hint at just how bitter this beer would be.This beer's flavor profile is multi-dimensional in such an interesting way. It has some characteristics of a very hoppy pale ale but its bitterness level is all IPA. In the end, who cares? It's good beer. Drink it.

Mouthfeel (4/5): The mouthfeel on Perpetual is dry and slightly prickly and sticky–all things a hophead should love. It has a medium carbonation well-suited to the style and ABV. Mouthfeel is definitely above average, but not out of this world.

Overall (4.5/5): What to say about Perpetual IPA? Well, it's clearly another well-executed, tasty brew by Tröegs that brings something unique to the table as far as hoppy beer is concerned. It takes elements of a traditional pale ale and a West Coast IPA and blends them. The result is an exceptional hoppy beer long on fresh, green, citric, piney flavors that exhibits quite a nice malt backbone. I highly recommend this one. Plus, a six will only run you about $11. In the world of craft beer, that's called a bargain.

Thanks to jlindros for this awesome extra

Pours a clean and crisp golden straw color with a finger of bright white

Tropical fruit on the nose, mainly mangos and pineapple. Very inviting!

The taste follows the nose. Mango and pineapple hop forward with a very faint malt backbone.

Light in body, clean and crisp. The carbonation is in an appropriate range. I might have liked a touch more but it's definitely not taking away from the beer. Easy drinking and goes down smooth.

Overall this is a solid IPA. I wouldn't expect anything less from Troegs after having Nugget Nectar. Solid brew and an even more solid extra in my latest trade. Cheers!

Poured from a bottle into a New Belgium snifter. The beer has a hazy, dark gold color with low carbonation and not much head. What head there is dissipates quickly. The nose has notes of sweet marmalade, green pine trees, and fresh flowers. I don't get much citrus or fruit aroma like I do with Troegs Hopback Amber or Nugget Nectar.

The beer has a medium to full body and a firm, yet slick, mouthfeel. The flavors are syrupy-sweet up front with honey and marmalade notes, then a generous salvo of bittering hops come in to liven things up. The hops tend more towards the piny, sappy, astringent flavors as opposed to tropical fruits, making the flavor of the beer seem much more bitter to my palate than it probably is.

Overall, this is a good IPA, but far from great. I don't think the hoppy flavors complement the sweetness of the malt very well. In my opinion, the best IPAs provide bitterness in the form of tropical fruit flavors such as grapefruit, lemon, and in the most desirable examples, peaches and sweet oranges. This one carries little, if any, fruity bitterness. Anyone who can find this IPA can certainly find others at the same price that are far superior.

A: small head with good retention however on a clear deep golden body. Excellent lacing.

S: very hoppy like a strongly hopped session with earthy hops dominating and citrus and floral hop compliments.

T: lightly malty IPA with a very nice herbal and floral hop character. Light tangerine and orange citrus flavors as well. Perfect degree of bitterness.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: this is an excellent IPA which is flavorful, drinkable and complex.

A - poured with a small head of white foam on top of a clear, golden body. The head settles slowly and leaves nice lace.

S - Pungent, spicy hops with some herbal notes and light malt.

T - Bready malt up front with some pine hops. The hops get s bit stronger in the middle with more pine and some sweaty character. Finishes with strong hop favors, moderate bitterness and lingering grassy notes.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, and a very dry finish.

D - a nicely made ipa that lets the hop character shine through with a minimum emphasis on the hops. Great aroma and a well developed flavor profile.

Bottle dated 6/8/12 and enjoyed on 7/14/12. Poured into a tulip.

Pour: Clear golden orange with a finger and a half white head that recedes to a film.

Smell: Resinous pine with a bit of citrus as well.

Taste: Sticky pine and citrus. Very bitter resinous characteristics. Little bit of light malts. Slight bitter pepper on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Sticky and bitter but crisp.

Overall: Pretty solid. Not the best, but I'm glad this is going year round.

When Perpetual IPA first came out last year it was awesome, a smooth and great tasting beer with an excellent hop flavor. Reminded me of Nugget Nectar when it first came out in 2004. Did a blind taste comparison with Nugget Nectar and Perpetual IPA was so much better.

I anxiously awaited the release of Perpetual IPA this year and was disappointed. Did the blind taste comparison with Nugget Nectar again and Perpetual IPA was just marginally better.
