Scratch #57 is brewed with two cocoa powder varieties and two kinds of berries to create a tart twist on a classic German style. Unfiltered and carbonated to a near-champagne finish, the beer is 7.9% ABV. Fermented in our open-top fermentation room, the yeast gives hints of pepper and clove designed to complement the fruit flavors. The cocoa powders add bitterness and some mouthfeel; the boysenberries and raspberries provide a tart, dry finish and the vanilla yields a subtle, sweet finish to the beer.

Served in a tulip at the brewpub for $5. Sampled 3/24/12.
A: Arrives with 1 ½ fingers of barely light brown head. Retention is decent and the thick, crescent shaped collar remains even longer. The body is a medium-dark shade of amber brown. Adequate lacing.
S: The nose strikes a nice balance between cocoa powder and banana esters initially. But as you get deeper into the beer, the weizen yeast takes over, as do the adjuncts, which lead to an assault of berry, chocolate and banana aromas. As the beer warms up, the result is an intense nose that would probably benefit from simplicity - or subtlety at the very least.
T: Much like the nose – perhaps dialed back a tad. As the raspberry works its way onto the palate, it begins to offset the banana esters and meld with the chocolate flavor. The upfront flavor could still benefit from some refinement but it all comes together nicely on the backend.
M: Great mouthfeel. The sustained tingle on the tongue works with the raspberry tartness. Medium body. Crispy finish.
O: Not far from my liking. Just a little too flamboyant in my mind. If the cocoa were more subtly integrated – and the yeast profile less sharp – I would probably be a big fan of this one.

Poured this beer into a pint glass. It has a nice amber color body with a a nice head that disaptes quickly to nothing. The smell has a sweet aroma to it with small hints of chocolate. The taste up front has a tart berry flavor to it, as it warms up the chocolate/cocoa flavor starts to come out. The mouth feel is great and overall a really good beer from Troegs. I also wanted to say that it is a very interesting beer also.

Pours a hazy orange-ish to amber color with a tan head. In the aroma, raspberry fruitiness, with a faint note of chocolate. In the taste, a small dryness of caramel and cocoa, with just a hint of fruit. A small bite and a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry cocoa in the aftertaste. Fruit in mostly all in the nose, and, well, it's interesting for sure, but not my speed.
