Scratch #70 - Fancy That Triple IPA, is the creation of our filler operator Joel Bigler. Joel originally brewed this intensely bitter & aromatic brew for the Al’s of Hampton Triple IPA Homebrew Contest finishing in the top three. Hints of alcohol come through on this beer but the playmaker is the bold hop flavor that dominates this beer. At 10.4% ABV Fancy That Triple IPA is nicely drinkable as it bludgeons you with intense hoppy goodness.

Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours slightly hazed golden orange with a nice one and a half finger tall white head leaving small trails of lace down parts of the glass.

S - Smells of lots of citric hops, fresh grass and pine resin initially growing much sweeter as it sits in the glass. The booze is ever present growing stronger and stronger as it sits in the glass, nearly overpowering everything else.

T - Starts off with a big citric hop bite slowly giving way to hints of pine resin, citric fruit rind, fresh cut grass and plenty of sweet caramel malt. The booze is ever present, only growing stronger as it sits in the glass. Finish is quite bitter, combining with the booze to leave the palate dried.

M - This is definitely a big beer. Plenty of hop bitterness and booze in the feel with moderate carbonation and a very dry finish.

O - I have had this beer four times now and each time it has been the same. Good amount of flavor and aroma but plenty of booze as well. I wouldn't turn another down but it wouldn't be my first choice either.

On tap at the brewery. In a snifter with Joe across the table from me.

A: The triple IPA is a tea colored golden ale, a thin head comes along with little to no lacing.

S: Very hoppy, even when cold. Peppery heat, resins and oils, plenty of citrus. Caramel adds some backing flavor but the hops are the dominant aspect of the ale. As it warms, the grapefruit becomes stronger, bringinig with it more boozy alcohol.

T: When cold, non-descript hop bitterness, booziness in tow, controls the ale. As it warms, citrus emerges with grapefruit as the dominant resiny aspect. Tropical flavors follow. The booziness, over 10%, can't hide anywhere. But the peppery oiliness grows on my, it's flavors a twist on the strong citrus. Orange and lemon zest add both sweet and tart flavors. A little much in the end, too strong for my likes.

M: The hoppiness is intense, strong and oily throughout. The alcohol can't hide anywhere in the ale, a burden that gets in the way.

A - Served with a murky, yet glowing, orange body...the head was creamy and stood one finger tall...the white head fell to full ring and left a few patches of lacing

S - This one is juicy and bitter...lots of citrus with a solid piney backbone...some citrus rind and resiny aspects linger

T - The flavors are big in this one...the hops dominate from start to finish with just enough malt in the middle to keep things interesting...the malt really doesn't come through with strong flavors, it just shows a presence...bitter fruit rind plays a nice part...flavors of grapefruit, orange, and lemon are the dominate fruits...piney hops come in at the end to provide another level of bitterness...the alcohol is only brief and does not get in the way

M - Full bodied...thick, nicely carbonation, bitter, no big alcohol presence, extremely dry...gone within seconds of swallowing

O - I enjoyed this Triple IPA much better than the last Triple IPA they brewed (50-something with mangoes)...the alcohol did not get in the way because the bitterness level was so high!

Big thanks to BA smoked for showing up at my house with a growler of this beast. Poured into a standard matching Troegs branded pint glass, the brew appears a clear color of golden orange. More than a finger of off-white froth cascades to the surface from bubbles in solution and maintains across the top with a silky layering. As the cap fades, it leaves patches of lacing on the glass. As the glass is swirled, a layering of yellowish stained froth revives to the surface pretty effortlessly. All around, a solid looking brew.

The aroma of this is strong with a fruity kick that is caught somewhere between a mixture of hoppy goodness and fusel alcohol notes. It boasts almost a fruity rind-like element that blends into herbs and some melon character something to the effect of cantaloupe and a bit of apple/pearish thing sort of but not quite. Nonetheless, the bouquet here is appealing and well rounded between the hops and the alcohol notes emitting from the glass.

The taste is herbal upfront with a solid hop presence that is rindy and oily that gets fruity like the previously mentioned melon character. At times the herbal aspect comes across mildly grassy and almost vegetative but not in an offensive way. The alcohol comes right into play and makes itself known with a fusel burst of alcohol that is reminiscent of a neutral spirit like vodka. It takes a few sips for the palate to become accustomed to just how big this brew is. While the alcohol inclusion is solid and noticeable, it isn't as forceful as you might expect for a brew above 10%. It actually blends in quite nicely with the assertive hop character.

This is a fuller bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. All around a solid brew and nice take on the style. I pretty much tore through the first half of my pint glass quicker than I should have and it pretty much gave me a head-rush. This is a beast of a brew that should be treated with respect. Cheers Joel, nicely done. Hop heads, get yourself down to Troegs and try this before it is gone.

On tap at the tasting room on 6/19

A- nice amber/orange color some mild white lacing

S- not much on aroma but I do get some alcohol and a nice citrus hint

T- mild alcohol burn but very well hidden at 10 plus percent. Pleasant citrus hop with a little piney hop profile as well. The crisp clean finish makes this an outstanding brew

M- medium bodied with a crisp slightly bitter finish

O- my favorite IPA from troegs so far... and yes that means better [to me] than nugget nectar

I had this on tap at the tasting room in Hershey, served in a tulip.

The color is a deep amber with moderately hazed appearance and small white cap of tiny bubbles. The smell is very hop dominant with some pine and citrus elements and a little bit of earthy, not quite catty notes. The feel is great for such a big beer it doesn't really show the alchol that much. The carbonation is moderate and astringency is fairly low with a nicely balanced sweetness level with subtle semi-dry finish.

The taste has what every hop fan wants a nice juicy herbal and lush flavor of citrus and some mild tropical notes, there is some light grapefruit tinges in there, but more of a pine aspect with some tropical fruit in the peripheral flavors. The malt is just enough to anchor the bitterness level and has a nice sweet edge to accent the tangy light acidity level. I was very impressed with what they did with this beer after being lucky enough to try Joel's homebrewed version. I feel it is one of the best IPA's that Troegs has brewed.
