Notes/Commercial Description:
As we spiral further toward the end of the Mayan calendar, Tröegs is brewing up a special beer to commemorate the expiration of planet Earth. Celebrate the countdown to extinction and raise a goblet of this colossal Russian Imperial Stout as we plummet into oblivion. If your tongue doesn’t disintegrate as a result of the birthday party cheesecake jellybean BOOM, it most certainly will wreak major havoc on your taste buds. ¿Impending Descent? is as enormous, face-melting, and palate-numbing as it sounds. If there ever was a last beer to enjoy before the apocalypse, this is it!

On tap at Frisco's Tap House in Columbia, MD. Poured into a chalice this beer is the deepest brown bordering on black. Mocha Brown cap of head is all that remains when it reaches the table.

Nice smell of bakers chocolate, more subtle dark roast and some anise.

Taste has more of a dark chocolate syrupy taste. Some vanilla in the background. A little bit of hop presence is showing up in the taste where I couldn't find any in the smell. It's giving it a nice bit of balance, whereas I thought this would only be a straight malt bomb.

Good consistency on this stout. Thicker than what you find in their year round JavaHead stout, but not at motor oil consistency. Carbonation is dialed in well, this stuff goes down easily and I'm not really picking up alcohol like I thought I would on a near 11% beer.

Good showing by Troegs. I hope since this has shown up two years in a row as a Brewery release that it might become a distributed seasonal in their lineup.

Available only at the brewery, as one of their scratch beers. This is an excellent example of a Russian imperial stout. It's thick, bitter and finishes slightly sweet, with a hoppy nose throughout. Flavors are of deeply roasted malt, with a hint of coffee. If you're considering a trip to the brewery, don't think twice!

A- Settles into the glass with a pitch black body and a huge, frothy, mocha-colored head. The head dissipates quickly, but leaves a ton of sticky lacing behind.

S- Tons of roasted malts and piney hops. Hints of vanilla and baker's chocolate.

T- Really similar to the aroma. A huge roasted malt RIS with an insane hop presence and hints of chocolate and vanilla. Somewhat sweet, lots of roastiness, tons of bitterness.

M- Full-bodied, palate-numbing bitterness, medium carbonation, but a slight carbonation tingle.

O- Just a massive beer with a huge body and huge bitterness. Troegs wasn't kidding when they came out with a beer for the end of the world.

Bottle purchased at the brewery in Hershey, PA. Pours black with a dark tan foamy head. Aroma of licorice and roasted coffee. Unbelievably the beer tastes of birthday cake... at first. This is soon followed by a deep gradually building bitterness that becomes more "hoppy" as the flavor fades. The 2013 version indicates 9.1% ABV with 140 IBU. Surprisingly drinkable.

Bottle received in a trade with OldBluesNewBrews. Thanks Justin!

Appearance: Pours a luscious looking opaque black with a 2 finger mocha crown that displays good retention and loads of lace. Yum incarnate!

Smell: Loads of chocolate (syrup, cocoa, bakers) with a touch of stale noble hops that almost mimic a lightly barrel aged effect when combined with the roasted malt.

Taste: Mainly chocolate up front with supporting hints of caramel, roast, vanilla, a mild and a smoothed out acrid edge. Little bit of earthy, spicy, and grassy hops come to the party to say hello. Alcohol is well hidden until the beer warms. Then a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol like character appears, but not much for a 11% abv beer.

Mouthfeel: Thin side of thick bodied with a smoothness that just enhances the drinkability. Carbonation is on the light side of medium.

Overall: Wow this is the best scratch beer I've had since triple mango! Highly enjoyable. Wish I had a case of it!

12oz bottle poured into Treehouse tulip.

A- Pours a very dark black with about a half finger of thick fairly dark mocha brown head that has about average retention and recedes to a wispy layer leaving thin lacing along the sides of the glass. Nice carbonation for a stout with decent consistency. This is exactly how an ideal stout should look.

S- Cocoa powder, chocolate cake, subtle fudge mixed with a little bit of tobacco, booze well hidden and decent aroma strength.

T- Cocoa powder, chocolate fudge cake, subtle hints of plums, cherries, and tobacco. Finishes with cocoa, faint coffee, a bit of leather, and little bit more tobacco. Aftertastes of dark vinous fruits and cocoa powder. Nicely balanced and fairly complex, I wouldn't age this too much longer as it seems like it may have picked up just a hint of acidity.

M- Creamy, velvety, very smooth, hardly any alcohol burn, very easy to drink, nice carbonation level for style.

O- This was a fantastic stout that I thoroughly enjoyed drinking. It had an almost perfect feel and appearance and nice complexity for a non-barrel-aged stout in both the aroma and taste. I don't know how much longer I'd age this for but it is still definitely drinking nicely. I wish Troegs would make this in their regular lineup.
