Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Followers of our Scratch Beer series may remember last year’s Cocoa Porter, Scratch #54. It was a rousing success, so we decided to return to the original recipe but give it a bit of a tweak. When we brewed it last year, we utilized approximately one pound of cocoa powder per barrel. This time around, we amped up the recipe to include a whopping THREE POUNDS per barrel! Now I don’t claim to be a mathematician, but I think that works out to be three times the cocoa powder we used last time. So if you like your beer with some intense chocolately goodness, then Scratch #54 was brewed especially for you.

I had this on tap in Hershey, served in a pint chilled, allowed to gradually increase in temp.

The color is practically black with a dark brown accent at the base of the glass. The cream is light beige and is thick and holds well with fine bead. The smell is very cocoa influenced with slight brownie batter type sweet aroma. The feel is very good, semi-dry and lightly bitter but moderately carbonated and balanced with sweetness and roastiness.

The flavor is very good a nice blend of the cocoa and dark malt with some light caramel in the body and subtle bitter elements of dark cocoa with a mild sweetness and perhaps a slight hop spice in the background with mild alcohol which keeps things interesting and the cocoa dryness in the finish is pleasant. Overall a very solid beer with the augmentation of cocoa only making it seem slightly fuller and adds a nice complimentary taste to the dark porter's maltiness.

Playing a bit of catch up on this one. Reviewed from notes.
Was lucky to get a pour from a growler of this one, it was gone crazy fast!

A - Pours deep brown, bordering on black with a small half finger tall off white head leaving spotty trails of lace down parts of the glass.

S - Smells of straight up cocoa powder and very little else. Maybe a touch of vanilla? Thats about it really.

T - Starts off with a HUGE cocoa powder taste / feel that is strong from start to finish. The chocolatey sweetness can only do so much, the powdery feel leaves the palate dry after each sip.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. The powdery feel is just so over the top, it really makes it hard to consume a lot of this in one sitting.

O - I liked this one, it is just a little too heavy on the cocoa powder. Maybe twice as much would have worked just as well. Oh well, better luck next year for this one.

Draft offering at the source. Served in a shaped pint glass. This brew is scratch 54 revisted with 3x the cocoa powder. I appears a hazy brown with a yellowish tan cap. Webby strings of lace stick to the glass. Not much head retention which is understandable, the cocoa murdered that. A swirl revives a half finger to the surface.

The aroma of this brew is straight cocoa. Rich chocolate sweetness with a bit of herbal and fruity hop inclusion. More smells reveal a faint citrus hop aspect trying to poke through but this is all cocoa powder in the nose.

A flavor of cocoa powder is all through the profile. Bitter like baker's chocolate contrasted mildly by herbal hops and some dark fruity alcohol. As it warms up, a bit of earth and roast emerge showing the first signs of the underlying base beer.

This is a medium bodied brew with a light amount of carbonation. It is a decent brew with lots of cocoa and worth checking out. It displays almost a chalky bitter feel from all the cocoa. It is nice if you are a huge fan of bitter chocolate. I know, I know, the brewery is located in Chocolate town and they need to produce a chocolate beer. I appreciate the efforts but scrap the porter recipe and start with a fresh idea.

Catching up on my reviews.

A - Served with a cola colored body that had some reddish hues towards the bottom of the glass...the head was white in color and stood two fingers tall...it dissipated quickly to just a wispy cap...some light lacing was left behind

S - Cocoa powder galore! Straight baker's dark chocolate cocoa powder...pretty one dimensional but I kept going back to the nose for more

T - Well the addition of the cocoa powder can not be missed...it's all over the palate, which for some might not be a problem...it reminds me of the baker's dark chocolate cocoa powder, just in liquid form...towards the finish, and as the beer warms, there's an earthy presence...I'm guessing it's coming from the malt and the hop addition

M - Medium bodied...great flavors, just lacking some punch

O - For all the people who say Troegs needs to do a chocolate beer now that they are in Hershey...here it is...the tripled cocoa powder really stands out and made this one better than Scratch 54...I just wish for some more body (I know it's just a porter)
