This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a glossy rounded out looking orange color with a slim finger’s white foamy head that dissipated within less than about forty seconds. The smell had a semi-crisp sweet orange; semi-sweet to sharp lemon melding into each other nicely and carrying over a fairly decent super light spice underneath. The taste takes the sweet orange and lemon to balance and bring in a crisp fresh sweet citrus to light spice aftertaste. There’s no finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation seems a bit under but that doesn’t bother me as it plays off "the session" part Manayunk says is on the can. Overall, as a Belgian pale ale it works. As a session, I think Manayunk pulled it off. Definitely would love to have again on a hot Summer’s day, maybe alongside while fishing too.

Appearance: Pours a hazy honey color with a frothy cap that fades rather quickly though it leaves a few squiggles here and there

Smell: Sugar cookie with a hint of lemon and pepper

Taste: Sugar cookie forward, with the lemon and pepper tones building into the middle; a little honey appears in the finish, with the other elements nicely blended

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation; slightly creamy

Overall: I wasn't expecting much given the previous reviews and the overall score but I found that I really liked this beer; a nice bit of flavor in a session ale

Spiffy can purchased at Hawthorne's; no date found on the packaging.

A- Fairly-hazy, apricot orange bodied from the can into a whiskey glass (hotel). A frothy white cap has decent retention falling out to a ring at the edges and a few large islands. Several webs of lace stick to the glass.

S- Zesty from the yeast with prevalent notes of lemon peel, peppercorn (as listed on the can, good job), inevitable coriander, pale Pils barley and fresh yeasty bread.

T- Peppery spice takes a slight priority over the zesty, semi-bitter citrus peel hinting at both orange and lemon rinds while the rest of the flavor comes from hints of raw Pils barley, apple esters, white grape, crusty bread and touch of toast. Slight spicy, grassy hop hints.

MF- Very much on the light-body side of the overall beer spectrum but does not totally come off as thin thanks to a fairly frothy, smooth texture and a crisp, zesty super high carbonation. Peppery, herbal bitterness in the finish.

Mostly peppery with a secondary hit of zesty citrus rinds building some complexity. A very light end body makes it a very easy drinker but the texture makes it not feel thin or watery.

Once again, the now-lifted curse of The CANQuest (tm) rears its ugly head. One of the tenets of the program dictates that an approved picture must be in place before a review CAN take place. The problems occurred when there was an interminable delay in getting pics approved, relegating beers to standby. Since then, someone else has taken over the approval duties and things are moving much more quickly, but now I am playing catch-up.

From the CAN: "Manayunk Session is a light-bodied Belgian-Style blonde ale that is refreshing and approachable. Aromas of lemon zest and black pepper artfully complement the simple grain bill. Take Session with you to the beach, ballpark, hiking or knock a few back with some freinds at your next cookout."

The Crack! was successful, but I still wanted to employ a gentle Glug. Naturally, this did not create any head, but an employment of the servers' trick got me a finger of fizzy, bone-white head with limited retention. Color was Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with NE-quality clarity and my Gelt Guys (Mammon, Croesus and Midas) stopped by for a look, but it was not golden enough for their taste. Sheesh! I fully agree with their claim of "lemon zest and black pepper" on the nose. It put me in mind of the jar of McCormick's Seasoning Salt that I (especially like to) use on fish. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was kind of light and unobtrusive on the tongue. It was unquestionably a Blonde Ale, but it seemed kind of ethereal. The finish was semi-dry, thanks to the yeast strain that they had employed. It would be a nice place to start for the Belgian-curious or for the situations listed on the CAN, but for me, it was kind of ho-hum. Sorry.
