Manayunk Brewing Company "India-style Pale Ale"
12 oz. can, no freshness dating

It's nice to review a beer once in a while that's simple and straightforward. It makes the review easy to write, and this is one of them. It's a classic American pale ale amped up to IPA strength. As long as it's clean and properly balanced you can't go wrong with doing that.

The body is a mainly clear golden-orange beneath a creamy head of off-white. The head retention is good, and the lacing is even better.

In the nose it offers citrusy Pacific northwest hops. I'm not sure what's in there exactly, but it comes across as Cascade with some Centennial. I'm not finding anything unusual, not even Amarillo. It's pungent, citrusy (orange, lemon, grapefruit), delicately piney, and slightly pineapple-like. A little bit of straight-forward golden and biscuity malt slips through as well.

In the mouth it's medium-light in body with a very nice, tiny-bubbled moderate carbonation that delicately bristles the sides of your tongue.

The flavor? Well it's as the nose suggests, naturally. There's more malt depth to it, of course, offering hints of bread dough and sugar cookies, all the while lending a perfect support to the hop bitterness and flavor. It's rounded, balanced, and quite drinkable; finishing quite dry with a lingering, solid bitterness and plenty of residual, piney hops. Perfect.

If there's an argument against this beer it would be that perhaps it might have better head retention and lacing; and that it only hits the low-end of the stylistic guidelines for alcohol. So, yes, thank you, I'll have another!

Another can courtesy of the legendary woodychandler. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a rich golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is heavy with caramel malts, just a bit of hops. Taste is well balanced malts and hops, some bitterness, smooth and easy drinking. Feels muedium bodied in the mouth and overall, if you are looking for a hop bomb, this ain't it, but I found this beer to be balanced and tasty.

Once again, the now-lifted curse of The CANQuest (tm) rears its ugly head. One of the tenets of the program dictates that an approved picture must be in place before a review CAN take place. The problems occurred when there was an interminable delay in getting pics approved, relegating beers to standby. Since then, someone else has taken over the approval duties and things are moving much more quickly, but now I am playing catch-up.

From the CAN: "Manayunk IPA was created to showcase the bright citrus and pine flavors from the Ameri[CAN] hops. A touch of crystal malt imparts a sweetness to balance the bitterness provided by the hops. Our IPA has more than 50 IBUs to satisfy all you hop heads out there. This medium body beer is crisp but goes down smooth, leaving your taste buds screaming for more."

It was a nicely chilled CAN, so I Crack!ed it open, but the Glug was about as gentle as I have employed in some time. I did not initially get much in the way of head, but an employment of the servers' trick and voila! - just better than a finger of tawny head that quickly fell, leaving behind some nice lacing. Color was Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a solid minty, evergreen quality and I was anxious for a taste. Mouthfeel was medium. The hoppy bitterness was prickly on the tongue, very much of a minty, evergreen quality, which in the face of all of the citrusy AIPAs of late, seemed like a nice change of pace. Finish was dry, bitter and just what this hophead was hoping for.

12oz can poured into a shaker pint.

Golden-amber with 2 fingers of fizzy, loose head. Good clarity and low-moderate carbonation.

Honey, navel orange, grapefruit, honeydew and sugar cookies.

Well malted with sugar cookies and honey. Honeydew melon, grapefruit juice and hints of navel orange. Finishes moderately bitter with pine needles and grapefruit zest.

Medium bodied, crisp and dry.

A good IPA that can be quite sessionable at only 5.5%.
