Poured a slight hazed sunshine yellow with a nice tight 1/2 finger head that had some good retention, lemony and clove aromas dominate and are quite boisterous very refreshing in the nose,a big sturdy body for the style I liked the bigger feel to it.Flavors of clove and lemon hit nicely with underlying toasty wheat malt, very quaffable and sturdy a style Iam not a huge fan of but I do enjoy well made examples and this is one of them.

Presentation: 11oz stuby bottle with that trademark owl on the label. No freshness date.

Appearance: Plenty of yeast in the bottle, so I swirl it up to create a cloudy orange-ish beer with a patchy white foam head -- decent retention.

Smell: Musty, clove, caramel and faint, very faint, banana.

Taste: Smooth and very creamy on the palate. Body is more or less light. Faint flavour of pool water, followed by an immediate lemon (touch of lime) tartness that is near puckering, and Sprite-like when combined with the tight carbonation on the palate. Malt flavours kick-in with a mellow sweetness, touch of toasty caramel, banana esters, yeasty must and a rounding dash of clove. Finish is a bit spicy and musty, going dry eventually.

Notes: This is truly a bit of something special, for many reasons. 1) A weizen from Japan? How'd that happen? 2) It's a fine example of the style, and 3) It's darnright tasty as hell!

However, this being said, you can't beat a weizen from the source ...

Tight little bone coloured lace, murky orange colour from the yeast being swirled and poured into the glass. Faint clove and a soft fruitiness in the aroma, fruitiness makes obvious suggestion of banana. Crispness is a somewhat viscous from the flexed medium body and the stiff carbonation. Estery with a palate cleansing spicy clove, nutty with fruity flavours of banana and pear. Big twang from the fermented wheat that leaves a touch of lemon and grain. A good go at the German Hefe-weizen style, perhaps too much body and that takes away from the drinkability other than that this is a really good beer.

Stubby 11 oz bottle with the cute owl on the label and cap. Pours a hazy honey gold body with a one finger vanilla head that lasts a couple of minutes before falling into ring and film lace. Some spotty patch lace is left on the glass, as well. Aroma is spicy pepper and citrusy lemon. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a satiny feel. Taste is slightly above average for a Hefe, yeasty and bready, with white pepper and lemon. Slightly bitter on the finish. Refreshing and nicely drinkable, but not a standout for the style.

330mL squat brown stubbie bottle, past its freshness date of 11/11/2008 by nearly three months, but in a land where cerevisial delights are few and far between, I'll take what I can get. Purchased at Muji, Canal City, Fukuoka (if that's of interest to anyone).

No true Weizengläser handy, just a standard reasonably tall Japanese beer mug. Poured with much less carbonation and head formation than I would have expected; disappointing. Bottle shape isn't appropriate for a Weißbier, especially since this has been sitting undisturbed for a while. When sediment was poured, it was an appropriate cloudy dark gold colour with little carbonation evident. Wonder if there was a slight leak in the cap - probably just the beer.

Smell is pretty authentic: banana more than anything else. It's been a while since I've had a decent Weizen, or indeed a decent beer of any kind, so my senses are rusty, but there was a surfeit of banana in the nose. Other typical Weizen aromas were there though; grainy wheatiness, cloves, bitter hops etc.

Taste is pretty unbalanced: a little sour, not as sweet on the tongue as anticipated and certainly more than a little rough on the palate. Disappointing, but it still resembles the style, it's nice and buttery and is definitely still drinkable, so it doesn't rank below 'average'. Perhaps I am a little overcritical since I am such a fan of this style, but this beer's heart is in the right place and I can't fault that.

Mouthfeel is pretty standard but there is a slight aftereffect in my mouth right now that is making my palate a little dry and unpleasant. Despite that though I'd definitely have a few more of these if I could - only I'm not in Fukuoka any more!

Overall: I'll have it again, preferably fresher, preferably at the brewery, and I'm sure my experience with this beer will improve a lot. Above average, but my tasting of this bottle wasn't anything better than the "average" Weizenbier out there.

Hazy but not chunky greenish yellow appearance, big small-bubbled head with spidery traces of lace. Slightly lemony and estery aroma. Taste is quite sweet and the mouthfeel is quite fizzy with fine sized carbonation. The main ester flavor was a sugary pineapple fountain syrup with a leavening of lemon grass citrus tang. Not as peppery as the Wit, but like the Wit, a slightly unsettling swallow for me. Not bad, Weizens always walk a fine line for me...

(Served in a small weizen glass)

A- This beer has a huge super strong carbonation that pushes a snow white head above the glass rim and still holds its shape. There is a golden yellow body that is hazy with little bits of stringy stuff floating around, which I assume to be trub of some sort.

S- This beer has a yeasty lemon note with a light fresh bread note that comes through when it warms.

T- This beer has a dry carbonic acid bite with a finish of green hops that is pretty soft. As it warms a bit more there are notes of slightly sweet bread and a note of wet basement which actually adds some nice depth to the beer.

M- This beer has a big fizz with a medium mouthfeel.

D- This beer has a light flavor but it is not that interesting and doesn’t have much depth. There is a hint of a wild ale note it the taste but it doesn't make up for missing flavor. This beer was not as heavy and most weizens and I didn't feel like I was full after I finished the bottle.

330ml bottle, 5.5% ABV. I haven't subjected myself to that Battling Seizure Robots-afflicted owl on Hitachino's labels for a while now, so here goes.

This beer pours a cloudy, bright pale straw colour, with one skinny finger of fizzy, bubbly, and sudsy dirty white head, which settles quite quickly, rendering but a few specks of remote islet lace in spots around the glass.

It smells of sharp pale grain, sweet wheat malt, musty yeast, creamy orange citrus, bruised banana, and clove - all bases duly covered. The taste is semi-sweet wheat malt, somewhat acidic citrus pith, lemon zest, and yeasty white grape lees - which all just seem to add to the overall tartness - ethereal clove/coriander spice, and a proclaimed banana simulacrum flavour that is more or less AWOL.

The carbonation is average, though a bit airy in its hollow frothiness, the body compensating somewhat with its fruity medium weight bravado, which includes an understated creaminess. It finishes fairly dry, the acidic fruitiness tugging things in that direction, away from the lingering, and now kind of spicy wheatiness.

While this has a few nice Deutschlander on vacation in Nippon nuances, replete with the expected complexity and thoroughness, the overwrought bitter (dry, acidic, sour) edge detracts from an otherwise enjoyable Hefe. Good, sure, but that sentiment must be taken with more than an ounce of suspicion and Lost in Translation acceptance.

Is the same golden-straw color of a typical weizen, but a little bit darker. The head doesn't have much retention, but has a nice, white apperance while it lasts.

Smells odd for a weizen - the smells are more similar to a Belgian white, with hints of orange - very citrus filled.

This beer has a lot of carbonation, and has a great taste. Very smooth start, with a finish that reminds me of zested orange. Leaves me feeling refreshed.

The more often that I have this beer, the more that I find I enjoy it.

Another great beer from the wrong direction. These guys make some funky stuff....I am digging it.
This one pours a solid golden-orange with alot of haze. Not sure if those are yeast particles or fish swimming around in there. Either way, they are trophy size...had to make sure I didn't choke on any. Wierd looking, but kind of cool.
Smells yeasty and spicy (clove) with some faint fruitiness (tropical rather than banana...well, maybe banana too).
Taste starts of grassy, then comes a citric blast of sweet and sourness. The malts kick in and add body, but stay in the wake of the sweet/tart burst. Yeasty flavors and grass dominate the finish, with some lingering sweetness as well.
Bold in body, but with enough carbonation to make it work.
Nice attempt at a hefe, with enough uniqueness to make it memorable.

The fact I managed to score this for next to nothing (see my Hitachino Nest White comments) thrills me. Talk about good fortune.

Cloudy, light brown without much of a head. This Japanese weizen had a very light flavor that lacked strong wheat tones, but had an indeterminable Sprite-like citrus sweetness (lemon? lime? somewhere in between?) and aftertaste. Ridiculously drinkable, this beer is mild and smooth. Would be great on a hot summer day. We accidently left a lot of yeast on the bottom, so that could have affected our review ("us" being TheJoj and me).

Part #1 of the Z-Test Adventure.

Pours a large initial head of soap bubbles. Under average aroma. Pale colour. Spicey taste, a bit of wheat and yeast, easy quaffable. Medium to slightly thin mouthfeel. Drying banana creamy finish. Clove and vinegary tart and malt aftertaste. Nice overall.

Cloudy, deep orange-amber with a good size off-white head that holds well but leaves only limited lace. Soft aroma of sweet citrus (somewhat orange) with some mild candyish notes, light clove, very subtle banana and a light tart note. The body is light but it has a really nice, super-soft creaminess in the mouthfeel. The flavor is gently fruity at the outset, coat-tailed by a tart and citrus character, then mellowing into soft grainy malt at the middle of the tongue. The finish really stands out though. Wonderfully refreshing; expressing some bubblegum and soft, light banana - then a lightly lingering yeasty mustiness that is just enough to make you want another sip. Incredibly well balanced. A really unique weizen. So full, and yet so delicately handled. There is something really special about this brewery!

T: watery. not a very full flavor, okay but a bit sour. unimpressive but okay.
M: sharp numbing, but otherwise flat.

pours out a clear golden orange with an enormous frothy white head. whoa. smells fruity (think strong citrus) with a light dose of wheat. heavier bodied than most weizens but crisp and bubbly none the less. tangy on in the mouth with huge lemon/orange flavors, light wheat and a slight clove like spice finish things off. a bit one dimensional, but good. highly drinkable and refreshing...a good beer, but not in the same league as the true greats (weheinstephaner, paulaner, hacker etc.)

Clear golden lively body. The head is a fomay white pillow. The aroma is wheat with hints of esthers. The flavor contains much more esthery banana then the aroma, in fact this is the dominant flavor with wheat playing second fiddle with some other floral flavors in the backup band. The body is nice and very drinkable. Better than I had expected.
