Went to the store to stock up on a few new things after a good day of work. Spotted this bottle and decided it would be good to drink tonight with dinner. I love hitachino nest beers, but don't get to try new ones (to me at least) very often.

Bought in the large bottle - biggest I've ever seen from this brewery.

Appearance is somewhere between a nice pilsner, sparkling cider, and champagne in color - a light crisp light golden hue. Pours with a pillowy white head, and plenty of tiny bubbles ascending to the surface in the glass, even several minutes after pouring.

The nose is really nice, although it smells more like cider than a wheat beer, I'm intrigued.

The taste... wow! Wheat, green apples, and a more belgiany yeast presence than I would have expected from the name. Sweet and light up front, spicy in the middle like cinnamon and cloves (but NOT too spicy), and the finish is a bit tart like green apples. It's like an apple pie in a glass, but in a good way. The spice and sugars aren't cloying in the least. This is the most unique beer I've had in this style.

Mouthfeel is really nice, although I wouldn't mind it being a little chewier. This is a light, easy drinking beer, not a meal. Despite the thinner feel of the beer, the mouthfeel is rounded out nicely by the higher carbonation. The carbonation works to emphasize the tartness in the finish as well.

Drinkability is super high. This beer is delicious, with no noticeable alcohol presence, cloying sweetness, or anything else to detract from its enjoyment.

I was a bit skeptical when I bought this. I love the brewery, but my tastes tend to lie in sour beers, and big heavy stouts and barley wines; but this was a delicious and enjoyable break from my normal routine.

12oz bottle into a tulip glass, some HOTD after a long night of drinking.

Into the Tulip glass, weizen comes out honey orange with some bronze highlights. A spritzy flimsy weak cap of popping bubbles comes up and then down.

This is a step away from your regular hefe and I'm down for the change. Instead of big banana, I get big apple. Some tart lemons and wheat, with a small malt backing. Not overrun with spice, I dig.

A step in a new direction, this is more a str8 weizen than a hefe and darker. Apple and lemon pair nice with somewhat of a twang. Not sour, just tangy. A small amount of sweet malt and no bubblegum that I get in some hefe's.

A pretty much medium bodied beer that is nicely carbed even though it does not look that way in appearance. This wont burn out your palate, I could drink alot.

This is what I like about Hitachino beer, you never know what you are going to get. Im sure I'll find a loser in the lineup down the line, but i've enjoyed what I had thus far, this being no exception.

I've been scoping this one out for several weeks. At $4 per 12 oz bottle, it took me a while to commit the cash. What an experience. This was unlike any hefeweizen I've had before, and certainly not what I was expecting.

The brew poured with a short head, 1.5 to 2 fingers of white foamy head that quickly dissipated. Color was slightly amber yellow in appearance.

The taste here is what was so unusual. Lemon undertones beneath a sour taste. Sour is not what I expected here. There was a tartness suggesting under ripe berries. Within a couple of sips, I knew this was not a beer I would feel the need to try again.

Mouthfeel was reasonable with good carbonation, but the mask of tart green berries lingered, outstaying it's welcome and sullying the potentially crisp nature. I'm not entirely opposed to sour. It just seemed out of place with this brew.

1pt 5oz bottle to Weizen Glass
Cool logo but no freshness date.

A: Pours straw yellow with a 3.5-finger bubbly white head. This quickly reduced to a small white crown in the first part of the session. Some yeasty haze and patchy lace initially.

S: Sweet and spicy phenolic character. Orange and lemon honey. A lot of what I expect to smell in a German Weizen..not a Japanese Weizen ha.

T: A lemony sweetness that was at times cloying. Wheaty with clove and hop spice on the finish.

M: A chewy beer that is well-carbed. Creamy and crisp finish that is semi-dry.

D: Low body but the sweetness could limit the session length...at least for me.

No banana character that traditionally have been present in a German Weissbier. A similar yeast character to the German style but different enough that you know its not from Germany. Not bad.

A Weizen from Japan? Cool! The names sounds like a bad translation but, hey, it's kinda funny.

This hefe pours a hazy orange, yellow with a bubbly white head that dissipates almost completely and leaves some patchy traces of lace.

Smell is full of yeasty, banana fruit esters and a ton of Belgian-esque sour cherry and, like a well-aged burgundy, even some leather in there too. Very interesting for a hefe.

Taste is mostly sweet and sour candied fruit (cherries predominantly with a good amount of lemon) with definite leathery undertones. There is some classic yeasty banana notes in there as well but not as pronounced as I would expect from a hefe. Finish is puckeringly sour with a touch of spice with a long, lingering earthy, leathery presence that lingers on and on and on . . . Very odd but actually quite impressive and an interesting factor interesting to ponder over.

Mouthfeel is light and very crisp with an oily, acidic finish that leaves the mouth watering and the palate tingling.

This beer loses a bit on drinkaility since it's sour nature makes it more of a sipper. Still, at 5%, I could see myself having a couple of these over a long period of time.

This is really unlike any other hefe I've ever tried. To me this beer seems closer in style to a lambic - crossed with a fine pinot noir :-)

This is the best and most unique beer from Japan I've ever had. I'd really like to try more from this brewery!

smell is of wheat, spice, pepper, grain, some slight orange peel, and some malt.

taste is of lemon, wheat, orange peel, and some spice, ends a little tart and somewhat dry.

Enjoyed in a pilsner glass.
Accidentally shook glass prior to opening, so some notes are likely exaggerated.

Head was lacking, even with aggressive pouring.

Dominating tart yeast flavor that stays on the palette for short sips, no real finishing flavor-shallow in depth of flavor for a hefeweizen.

Enjoyed for being unique (tartness) without being offensively so. Unlikely to try again unless found on tap.

1 pt. 5 oz. bottle poured into a weizen glass.

A: Poured a cloudy lemony-golden with 1-inch head. Lacing all around the glass. Awesome carbonation. No complaints here.

S: Tons of yeast. Some crazy sweet/sour clove thing going on with some mild funky citrus. Could have sworn this was a Saison by the smell instead of a Hefeweizen.

T: Huge wave of tartness followed by yeast and lemon-citrus notes. Semi-dry finish.

M: Great carbonation. Tartness does some crazy stuff to your tongue.

D: Had this one a long time ago. Tastes a lot different than I remember. I've had a bunch of different kinds of Hitachino Nests and they always seem to push the boundaries of the beer category listed on the bottle. Either that means they're that good, or they need to re-label their beers, but regardless I find myself picking up more bottles for a second-try.

I drank this from the bottle into a chalice.

It pours a medium cloudy gold with a small white head, not much lacing or any disthinguishable color from any wheat.

It smells very sour with a hint of lemon and wheat.

The taste is average light notes of hops with honey, but nothing special here.

Mouthfeel is watery, pretty drinkable.

Pours a hazy golden with a 2-finger fluffy white head. Lots of carbonation rising. Lacing is OK.

Aroma of banana, clove, citrus and somewhat grassy.

Taste is of light banana, light clove, light lemons and some wheat. Nothing really clear. Rather muddled.

Mouthfeel is medium-light, cleansing.

Overall, not too good for the style. The taste just didn't match up.

330ml bottle, purchased at the Tobu department store in Ikebukuro.

First off all, I have to give big props to this bottle, which combines the Japanese obsession with cuteness with an excellent design. After popping the cap and pouring, a light orange, cloudy body is revealed to sit under a couple fingers of bone white head. Sadly, the head fades to a thin cap quite rapidly, and the lacing is too fluid and heavy to grasp the sides of the glass. While the colouration is excellent, the head retention and lacing is certainly below par for the style. The aroma is also quite interesting, notably for its lack of banana esters, and its emphasis on a nose full of yeast, wheat and clove. The crispness, and slight herbal quality, almost recalls a Belgian wit more than a hefe. Again, there is a marked absence of banana when the beer is tasted. Faint hints linger at the back, but the dominant feature here is a bullish wheat body and a yeast spiciness, with pronounced clove notes. While its interesting, and the mix of slightly sour and sharp wheat with some sweetness is great, I do look for a lot more banana in a hefe. Fortunately, the body helps pick up the rest of the drink, with its ethereal lightness elevated to a smooth creaminess by a pillowy carbonation. Its refreshing and full at the same time.

My thoughts on this beer are mixed. Its a decent sessionable brew, but no better than any number of other hefes, and I regret not picking something else to bring back from Japan. After tasting some great Japanese hefeweizen, and then greatly enjoying Hitachino's Espresso beer I had high hopes that this would combine to form a great beer. I need to tone down my expectations.

Sparkly yellow with clouds and heavy carbonation very visible with a bit off-white head that held and laced sporadically down the glass. Light yeasty bread with some candy apple or something similar on the nose. Light but very good smell. Wheat, yeast, strong clove, and kinda crunchy toward the end. Thin like this brewer seems to prefer and heavily carbonated.

Appearance: Pours a hazed, dull orange body with a thin, wispy, white head.

Smell: Tangy wafts of malted wheat with lesser notes of toasted grain, lemons, and earthy, spicy cloves.

Taste: Sweet, tangy wheat malt, everso slightly toasted, and with a little pop of table sugar sweetness. A flavor of tart lemons and a pinch of clove enters the taste, but no real banana esters. Light, very brief hop bitterness. The lemony tartness outshine the other tastes in the latter half. Finishes dry and lightly crisp.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus, crisp carbonation.

Drinkability: A pleasant, refreshing wheat ale, but comes up well short of being an ideal hefeweizen.

Had to give another shot to the land of the Rising Sun, and I am quite happy that I did.

The beer pours a crystal clear (at first) pale gold. A little swirling of the bottle and the signature cloud of beauty rears it's lovely head. Speaking of head, it was large and quite fine.

The smell and taste are both dominated by clove. There is some bannana and a little maltage going on in the back, but the clove is sitting in front bullying the others around. Nice, but in need of a bit of balance.

The mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing, high carbonation, and some carryover astringency.

I could drink quite a few of these. Thank you Kiuchi Brewery for redeeming the commonly seen Japanese Macros...this pairs better with sushi anyday.

Appearance - The beer is a a mustard yellow and very cloudy in color. The head is lack luster at best and quickly dissipates. Seems to be a severe lack of carbonation after the pour.

Smell - The smell is very dull and missing many notes. A mild smell of orange and banana, but not much of either.

Taste - Not bad through and through. Seems to be slightly heavier taste at the end. Progresses from a wheat taste to a citrus taste. Oddly, taste is highly carbonated, but no head or consistency of bubbles.

Mouthfeel - Light body, more carbonated feel then it looks. Very citrus after taste.

Drinkability - Overall, this beer was poor, but not bad. I do not think i will buy this beer again, but enjoyed drinking it.

Appearance: Poured a honey color, slightly cloudy. Half-finger foamy white head, reducing slowly to a thin covering layer. Decent lacing.

Smell: Smells of wheat, banana, and cloves. A nice "spiced" nose, though pretty mild. Definitely a hefe, if a unique one. When first poured, though, it had a slight grassy off smell. Very nice in the glass, though.

Taste: More malty than I'd expect from a hefe and a little bitter on the front end, but still decent wheaty. The banana and spices come through, as well as some lemon, but not nearly as good as in the nose. Better than average, but not as complex as a good German hefe.

Mouthfeel: Kind of thin-bodied, but smooth enough to make up for that. Smooth and easy to drink.

Drinkability: A nice hefe, definitely unique (coming from Japan and all). Not nearly as nuanced or complex as a good German hefeweizen, but very good in its own right. Very refreshing and easy to drink. A good beer to try; while there may be better hefes, this one is will not disappoint.

330mL squat brown stubbie bottle, past its freshness date of 11/11/2008 by nearly three months, but in a land where cerevisial delights are few and far between, I'll take what I can get. Purchased at Muji, Canal City, Fukuoka (if that's of interest to anyone).

No true Weizengläser handy, just a standard reasonably tall Japanese beer mug. Poured with much less carbonation and head formation than I would have expected; disappointing. Bottle shape isn't appropriate for a Weißbier, especially since this has been sitting undisturbed for a while. When sediment was poured, it was an appropriate cloudy dark gold colour with little carbonation evident. Wonder if there was a slight leak in the cap - probably just the beer.

Smell is pretty authentic: banana more than anything else. It's been a while since I've had a decent Weizen, or indeed a decent beer of any kind, so my senses are rusty, but there was a surfeit of banana in the nose. Other typical Weizen aromas were there though; grainy wheatiness, cloves, bitter hops etc.

Taste is pretty unbalanced: a little sour, not as sweet on the tongue as anticipated and certainly more than a little rough on the palate. Disappointing, but it still resembles the style, it's nice and buttery and is definitely still drinkable, so it doesn't rank below 'average'. Perhaps I am a little overcritical since I am such a fan of this style, but this beer's heart is in the right place and I can't fault that.

Mouthfeel is pretty standard but there is a slight aftereffect in my mouth right now that is making my palate a little dry and unpleasant. Despite that though I'd definitely have a few more of these if I could - only I'm not in Fukuoka any more!

Overall: I'll have it again, preferably fresher, preferably at the brewery, and I'm sure my experience with this beer will improve a lot. Above average, but my tasting of this bottle wasn't anything better than the "average" Weizenbier out there.

11.2 floz brown owl bottle poured into Weihenstephan weizbier glass.

A - a hazy mild straw yellow, very light and delicate. looks better when held up to a light, becomes slightly more golden then. the head is big and white, slowly dissipates and leaves a nice one finger layer on the top.

S - a slight caramel buzz and some light fruity sweetness lingers int the background.

T - initial taste is of something a slightly bit bitter on the back of the tongue, maybe a bit spicy or as people have suggested that of cloves. the finish has some definite wheaty notes come through and the clove. the after taste is most certainly sweet and grainy, a pleasant finish to an odd little beer.

MF&D - the feel is good, great amount of carbonation, but this is only here to make up for the lack of thickness, the body is quite light in my opinion. but this does let one drink quite unencumbered, and despite not really liking the beer all to much, I can see myself having another.

Hitachino has been impressing at a fast rate, with few misses and some unique hits. This one pours a cloudy, murky, orangey light lemon with a thin head that dissapates and a light lacing ring. Sure looks like a heffe. Aroma of citrus and brett. Am I the only one that picks up Hitachino's resident funk...found in several across the board including the reining champ, XH?The body is spritzy, carrying a lemon zest, light citrus peel and the barnyard I love. Horse hair and confectionary sugar take this one above the rest. The sweet, powdered sugar is light and rides the palate to a soft end. I have been consistently grinning after my lips retreat from the nest. Kumpei!

A: Poured from a bottle to a weizen glass. Had a brownish-yellow color and a slightly cloudy texture. There was a big, foamy, long-lasting head and solid lacing.

S: Smelled of wheat, bananas and an somewhat off-putting acidic quality.

T: As with the smell, there was an astringency that was very unpleasant in the taste. Had some wheat and bananas, but none of the sweet subtlety of its German cousins.

M: A decently high amount of carbonation and a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

D: This is a disappointing entry from Hitachino. It seems they deviated away from the style a little. It's simply not that tasty.

Poured a hazy golden orange with a nice, off-white head that fell to a thin ring with little islands floating on top.
Aromas of green apple, some cloves, hints of ginger, wheat, and sour lemon.
Wheaty flavors dominate with some lemon coming next. Hints of the spices, not as strong as in the aroma.
Kind of thick mouthfeel. Good carbonation, and the lemon flavor lingers for a bit.
Fairly drinkable. Maybe a little heavy for a hot day, maybe better for early/mid fall before things get too cold outside.
Not bad beer. There are definitely better hefes out there, but this is still a good one to try.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a weizen glass. Beer was a golden straw color with a huge, foamy white head. Heavy lacing around the glass and aggressive carbonation.

Aroma was honey, pears, rice and apples.

Taste was much sweeter than expected. Lots of apple flavor along with some light spices.

Thick, chewy mouthfeel. On the syrpuy side.

Not at all what I expected from this beer. A pretty unique hefeweizen, but I'm not sure it's one I'd work hard to track down again.

Shipped back from my trip to Indiana. I actually got this one by mistake. I meant to grab the White and got the Weizen - damnit really wanted the White.

Poured from a 330ml bottle (no dating info) into a weizen glass. It was a hazy pale yellow/straw color. It had a good fizzy white head that started to quickly evaporate but then it stopped and left a thin layer of foam for rest of drink. Good carb but no lacing.

The aroma was weaker version of standard hefe. Banana, clove and malt. The taste was good except for a tart finish that I found a little annoying. I like my hefes more fruity than spicy. For spicy, I'll drink a saison or a white. The base taste was good but the vinegary tartness was odd. Mouthfeel also hurt by the vinegar bite.

Overall, it was a good but not great beer. Glad I tried it but there are better ones out there. Now I just need to find the White.

Pours a nice cloudy golden color. A good amount of carbonation with a nice white head that has a fairly fast retention.
Smell is very strong of fresh wheat and biscuit. There is a good finish to the wheat with some nice citrus and floral smell to it, especially banana.
Taste is very strong in the wheat department. Very subtle floral and citrus taste, stronger on the floral.
Mouthfeel has a grainy feel to it as well. Never really felt the strainy wheat feel on a weizen before, very interesting.
Drinkability is very refreshing. This is one of those great hefeweizens that refresh your thirst on a warm day, but have enough flavor to not get boring over a long period. It would be more refreshing if the body were thinner and crisper, but overall a good session beer.

Poured a slightly murky gold with a large head which left good lacing. a nice looking brew.

Smelled tart and spicy with a very small hint of banana.

Tasted much as it smelled. Nice citric tartness about it with a hint of banana.

Wonderful mouthfeel. Lots of carbonation present along with a smooth finish. Medium bodied.

This was a very refreshing beer. If it wasn't for the rather steep price ($4 for an 11 oz bottle) I'd rate it higher in this department. Worth a try if you come across it.
