This is the third Hitachino beer I have had. Their beers have been decent, but definetly nothing noteworthy. Here is my review of the Real Ginger Brew.
A: Pours a lot darker than I thought it would. Is a murky brownish amber color. Very cloudy. Head is tan and it leaves light lacing on the glass.
S/T: Ginger heavy in the aroma. Not much else is detectable except for the ginger. Taste is also ginger heavy, which is to be expected. I get hints of a Brown Ale in the distant back. Maybe some brown sugar and caramel. Very earthy as well. Overall, a very unique and different beer. Not excellent, but quite different.
M/D: Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Somewhat syrupy. Finish is a little sweet, almost Barley Wine-like. Drinks okay. The sweetness is more prevelant as it goes. Probably not something I could drink more than one of without getting sick.
I haven't had very many ginger brews, but this is probably the best of the ones I have had. I have had Left Hand Juju Ginger, and Dogfish Head Pangaea, both of which were rather disappointing. This has a more full and complex flavor to it. Definetly worth checking out.

(bottle code RG.13.12 - poured into a tall Unibroue tulip)
A: tall, gooey-spongy foam to start... somewhat cloudy, dark caramel color - looks like liquified caramel in the process of cooling off dry...
S: browned, dry caramel overtone... old, candied ginger
T: heavy malt foundation, malty ginger beer, herbal bitterness in the finish... powdered ginger and grain-husky bitterness lingers... tiny hint of spicy alcohol
M: fatty-round... thinnish, chewy-gooey viscosity... booze enhances the notably dry finish
O: caramel-y malt and powdered ginger are core to the taste here... it appears that it could be a goopy mess, however, the flavors seem to have decent balance and it thankfully ends up surprisingly dry... if you dig malt and ginger anything, this is a good one
