from a pretty recent batch of this stuff from todays date 11-26-11;

A: Pours a sort of wild strawberry muddy brown pale violet color with a distinguished, very thinly cut ginger colored with decent retention and good lacing.

S: subdued ginger notes and cane sugar on the cane.
an afterthought of wintergreen.

T: Almost at the same time, sweet brown sugar cane slowly fills the mouth right next to sliced ginger (the head). A whisper of ripe red fruit over the middle, and finishing with a very clean sort of halfway chewed double mint gum, or a mild citrus/wintergreen if you prefer. Not impressive depth of flavor or boldness.

M: latte froth.

O: very quaffable but not all that outstanding in expression of flavor. Not worth the price, these beers have become very expensive in the last two years.

Served at room temp, it's a clear copper colour with a 2 finger head of foam.

Ginger and honey in the nose. There's another spice here, I reckon it's nutmeg. Nice aromas going on.

Ginger first, honey sweet flavours second, nutmeg brings up the rear. Sight hop bitterness here but that isn't really needed for me to like this brew.

Smooth smooth mouthfeel. Very creamy. Oh and the foam is long lasting and there's awesome lacing.

In plain words, this is very good.

Fiery jack-o'-lantern orange with abundant (stationary) yeast and abundant (rising) bubbles. The beer is pretty impressive in that it looks like it contains its own light source. The head was huge and Belgian-like immediately after the pour and filled almost the entire glass. I'll ignore the fact that there's very little lace because this is one fantastic looking beer.

The nose smells like... wait for it... ginger. I happen to love ginger, so I like the nose just fine. The best part about it is that there's a pale malty sweetness underneath the spice. At least it smells like there is.

Real Ginger Ale is real fabulous beer. I don't need to check my reviews to know that this is the best ginger beer that I've ever had. I'm overjoyed that Kiuchi decided to brew what tastes and feels like a bigger beer rather than a light, refreshing one. I wouldn't want the bold, rich flavor to be scaled back one little bit.

I love the sugar cookie soaked in honey sweetness. It's obvious that there's a fantastic beer beneath the perfectly calibrated, freshly grated ginger. I can also appreciate a tart, apricot and peach fruitiness. The rear label says that Ginger Ale has an 'intriguing balance of ginger-spicy, sweet-malty and hoppy-dry' flavor. Other than the dry part, I couldn't agree more. This is a fascinating, multi-faceted and delightfully delicious ale.

I'm a sucker for lush, silky mouthfeels, so it's no great surprise that I love this one. Who knew that all those bubbles would expend most of their energy in head creation and that the mouthfeel would be so poised? Quality brewers brew beer with quality mouthfeels.

Hitachino Nest Real Ginger Ale (along with Celebration Ale and White Ale) is the cream of the Kiuchi crop. One probably has to like ginger to like it, so it won't appeal to everyone. It sure as hell appeals to me though. I just wish I could remember where I bought the bottle since I'd love to lay my hands on a few more.

Poured into a standard pint glass a dull rust color with a thinner white head, the ginger is light in the nose intermingling with some floral hop and toasted grain.Same as the aromas really on the palate the ginger comes thru late and gives a little edge at about mid swallow up front is a mix of floral citric hop and toasty lightly sweet malt.Hmm not half bad but the ginger could be a bit more pronounced before the lingering finish, glad I tried but not sure I would go back.

Pours into a pilsener glass at Muramoto in Madison, WI a blushing chestnut with a creamy khaki head. The ginger is not overdone, (what a pleasant surprise), it just lingers throughout while still allowing for wonderful fruit notes, mainly strawberries, to shine. Flavor matches with a healthy amount of caramel. Body is light and palatable. Complimented our deserts of strawberry eggrolls, ginger sorbet, and black sesame cream Brule perfectly.

The Real Ginger Ale pours from the 11.2oz stubby bottle a dark amber/orange color with a half inch of small bubbly off white head. I get a hit of sweet carmalized fruits upfront along with an obvious, yet mellow ginger spiciness. A bit bready with some brown sugar and a waft of herbal hops. An interesting aroma.

First sip brings a sweet, pale caramelized maltiness upfront that's a bit toasty. Fruity as it makes its way down along with a nice integration of spicy ginger. Almost woody in flavor, this one finishes quite dry. An interesting brew with a nice sweet/spicy aspect. A faint herbal hop at the end as well..but it's the ginger that really leaves its mark.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, rather dry with well placed carbonation. Goes down smooth, but the finish gets to be a bit much after each sip. Not a brew I'd drink regularly, however it's quite intriguing and definetly brings the ginger flavor. Worth trying if you enjoy Kiuchi's brews or if you like ginger.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 11.2oz bottle into a smooth mug.

Appearance: It has a dark amber brown body with orange highlights. On top sits tall foamy off white head with very good retention and makes good lacing on the glass.

Smell: The aroma has heavy hit of ginger in sweet fruity and bready malt with some funky yeast and spices.

Taste/Mouth Feel: The flavor is true to its aroma. It has a solid medium body with a strong spicy ginger presence with a touch of allspice. This is layered over a sweet bready and fruity malt with a note of apple juice, citrus and a touch of funky yeast. The spice and mild alcohol presence warms the palate and the finish shows a light touch of hops. The texture is slick and lively with nice active carbonation.

Notes: Overall this beer is very interesting with many layers of complexity. This is not a beer you can drink a lot of but I did enjoy it and would highly recommend this beer to someone who is looking for something different maybe odd and defiantly special.

Tried this rarity on tap at the Lazy Boy in White Plains NY. I sampled it before I went for a pint, it tasted pretty good, sort of "interesting" after a few sips I knew I had made a mistake. This is heavy very flavorful brew, usually not a bad thing, but here were talking lots of ginger, lots of mint, clove, spruce, pine etc. This stuf was just plain nasty IMHO. To much personality, here equals tough to drink. Over the top in the "herbed/spiced" department for my palate.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this beer.

The beer gushes out the top when opened and then pours a murky orange color with a white head. The aroma is tart lemon with some nice malt and brett character. The flavor is very tart with some brett funk as well as some lemons and oranges. Tart, funky finish. High carbonation and medium mouthfeel.

Opened 11.2 oz bottle and poured into Nonic glass.

Nice but low bubbly head that dies down quickly atop a mostly translucent amber brown brew.

Surprisingly, Smell is of ginger.

Taste is of ginger. Nice flavor sort of expands on the palate with sweet hints of brown sugar. Not overwhelming. Also faint hops. A really nice beer. I like the occasional ginger brew, and this one is well worth looking for.

Hitachino Ginger Brew pours an orange-amber color with a medium-dense head. The head quickly dissipated, with no lacing (although I suspect there may have been some soap on the inside of the glass). Initial note of ginger predominates and lasts throughout the drinking. Tastes initially of ginger, with a malt undertone, and finishes with a nice ginger-malt combination. Mouthfeel is nice, light to medium. Overall a refreshing summer beer, with a very good drinkability. My only qualm was a weird aftertaste at the bottom of the glass, but I suspect that there was some soap residue (which also may have caused the head to disappear so fast).

ST: 12oz poured into a pint glass. The bottle does not have a freshness date.

A: Dark reddish brown (almost rust) with a fingernail deep head that is slightly brown. It really has a striking color; though, it does not leave much lacing.

S: Nice scents of malt and bread, but, and to no surprise, sweet ginger dominates the aroma.

T: Malt quickly changes into sweet and spicy ginger (it reminds me of ginger dressing that always comes on salads at a sushi or hibachi place). The finish has more spice, warming alcohol, and some bread.

M: Medium bodied and smooth.

O: Herbed or spiced beers are frequently considered novelty beers. It is true that this beer has a very unique flavor (and color), but it is not brewed for kicks and giggles. The sweetness and spice of the ginger work together to create a beer that has balance. The beer can feel a little heavy (slight syrup); I wish it has higher carbonation.

(Served in an American pint glass)

A- This beer has a dark brown clear body with a reddish hue to it. There is a thin tan creamy head that sits on top for a bit and a strong carbonation.

S- This beer has a spicy dry ginger note with a light caramel malt note in the background. The ginger was the main aroma.

T- This beer has a spicy and slightly sweet ginger bite to it that controls most of the flavor. The ginger heat hangs on your breath after each sip. There are some very light notes of malt in the background when it warms but they are pretty faint.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a slight ginger heat but not alcohol heat in the finish.

D- This beer has to much ginger and not enough supporting flavors. I like ginger but I just couldn't find the beer in this glass.
