From the little bottle with the owl into a tulip glass

Visual (4): Orangy-red color with almost no clarity and a lot of particulates. Looks almost like a pumpkin spice beer. Head was slightly off white (three-finger down to single finger quickly), with large rolling bubbles. Eventually settles into a thin white film across the top of the beer.

Aroma (4): Mainly the crisp, but light, smell of ginger. Makes me think of eating sushi. Malty scent is weakly present, enough to make sure you remember that's a beer you're smelling.

Taste (3.5): Ginger is dominant, but not in the way I was expecting. Other ginger beers tend to be overly sweet with the ginger flavour, while Real Ginger Brew showcases the 'real ginger' as almost an undertone. Sweetness is present, but not overstated. The tiniest hint of bitterness at the end with almost no taste indication of the higher 7% ABV. Like the initial taste, any lasting ginger flavour is almost non-existent.

Mouthfeel (3): Thin and watery, emphasizing the lively carbonation. Leaves a chalky coating and an alcoholic numbness on the tounge

Overall (4): The smell and look are great for a ginger beer and the taste is bang-on the goal. Couple this with some sushi and you have the perfect match. I'm struggling to place this as a "refreshing" or "savory" beer, likely because its a bit of both depending on when you're drinking it.

24.3 oz bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 3/2012. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy reddish copper color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of ginger root, caramel, pear, apple, citrus zest, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, toffee, herbal, floral, grass, light clove, and herbal earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of ginger, malt, hop, and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, ginger, toast, brown sugar, pear, apple, light citrus zest, brown bread, toffee, herbal, floral, grass, light clove, and herbal/toasted earthiness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, ginger, toast, brown sugar, pear, apple, brown bread, toffee, herbal, floral, light clove, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt, ginger, and moderate yeast fruitiness; with a good malt/spice balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and slightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice spiced amber ale. All around good balance, complexity, and robustness of malt, ginger, and moderate yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured out of a 330 ml bottle into a tulip glass. Bottle date seems to be July 2013.

A - dark reddish-brown color, somewhat cloudy with visible particles of ginger throughout. Thin head and minimal lacing.

S - Earthy malty tones and sweet ginger tea dominate the initial smell. Another description would be "gingerbready". Slight hoppiness when swirled in tulip glass.

T - First thing I thought was that this tastes like an alcoholic version of 'salabat' (Filipino sweet ginger tea). I like. Smooth, sweet, bready malt with pronounced sweet ginger. Slight hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Flavors enhance with sitting/warming (like everything else, I guess).

M - Quite spritzy, like a non-alcoholic ginger ale. It feels almost soda-pop-like.

O - Very satisfying beer. I like the scent and flavor profile much more than expected and will probably buy again.

Bottle marked 6.13.10 at 45 degrees into a pint glass
Aroma of ginger and stale beer
Head average (4 cm), off white, frothy, diminishing to a 1 mm layer
No lacing
Body medium orange with very small particulates suspended throughout
Flavor begins with a burst of alcohol which blasts out any subtle flavors. After getting by the initial swallow, there is a slight ginger flavor and aroma remaining, while the stomach burning begins. No hops, no malt, no diacetyl
Palate medium, slightly oily, carbonation soft

A passable beer, with a subtle ginger flavor, certainly less aggressive than Crabbie’s. More of a novelty beer.
