My fourth Hitachino beer, and a great one at that. I finally found the hidden gem of their lineup. Here is my review:

A: Pours a dark black. Head was quite large on the pour, but it shrunk quite a bit. Lacing is excellent. Just a very creamy and delightful looking stout.

S/T: Upon the first smell, I am reminded of their Lacto Sweet Stout, which isn't a bad thing. Somewhat sweet with a smokey character. The taste on the other hand, is much more complex and rewarding. This is a very balanced beer. Lots of different flavors, but nothing really stands above the rest. Coffee is the initial flavor, but its not a super rich or strong coffee. Its more of a mellow, less acidic coffee flavor. Chocolate is right there as well. More of a dark chocolate and a little sweet. Also a nice roasted malt and smoke character in there as well. The flavors just mingle well on the palate to create a balanced and enjoyable stout.

M/D: Very creamy and tasty in the mouth. Would be excellent as a breakfast or dessert beer. Drinks pretty typical for a stout. Not over the top, so it could be sessioned if desired. Nothing offputting about the beer at all.

I was more than impressed with this one. Such a complex and balanced flavor profile, its hard not to enjoy this one. I rarely buy import brews, and this is going to make the short list of ones I will revisit often. Not up there with Brunch Weasel or Founders Breakfast, but still an excellent choice. Highly recommended.

Pours black with a small khaki head, which has pretty good retention, and leaves spotty lacing. The Aroma has espresso, cocoa, dark chocolate, and dark roasted malt.

The taste is somewhat charred with dark roasted malt, espresso, dark chocolate, cocoa, and black licorice. There is not much sweetness, and there is a bit more of a charred taste than I would like, but it is still pretty good.

Light to medium bodied with modest carbonation. There is a charred malt aftertaste. Somewhat creamy. Not a bad beer at all. Worth trying if you get the chance.

I love esoresso stouts and this just did not do it for me.

Taste: Comes on nice and smooth with a good espresso taste then turns very bitter for the after taste Its got a very strange middle that is quite unpleasant to me.

Smell: It smells quite nice very strongly of dark coffee and lightly of stout under that.
