The aroma gives off slightly sour bread crust, molasses, and dark roast coffee beans. The tan head is large and frothy; the body is black and opaque. The flavor is predominantly characterized by espresso and alcohol; the overall effect is strangely but distinctly reminiscent of the aged pepper quality of hot sauce. There is an undertone of dark fruit/molasses. Bread crust malt lingers in the finish. The body is medium-full with restrained carbonation.

The espresso, which was actually used, is quite apparent. I love coffee about as much as I love beer, but it's hard to say how well it works in this case. There doesn't seem to be much to taste besides the espresso and the alcohol, the latter of which verges on solventy. I won't say it's overall bad—far from it—but the alcohol and weird hot sauce flavor are a bit too distracting to enjoy the other aspects fully.

Pours black with a deep mocha head, big and fluffy, going down really slow to a small cap and thick messy lace. Looks really nice.
Rich smell of dark chocolate with a bit of cream, Italian espresso, a bit of sweet nut, molasses, soy sauce, vanilla, cinnamon, faint prune and dried fig.
Surprising taste, really strong clear espresso character. Starts with some light dark fruit and coffee acidity, easing into chocolate and rich espresso, robust, sweetened by a just bit of caramel and with a very faint milky note. Light dark spices, the dusty woody kind. A "green" hoppy crispness in the finish, just in time to balance out the dark bready malt that brings more and more roast.
Medium body and carbonation, close to being smooth but not quite there. Aftertaste of coffee, a bit of roast and cocoa powder, and even a bit of lingering fruity hop. Bit of booze.
Big points for the nice espresso notes, but in the end there's something holding it back. Not sure what, but it's not that serious. It's a sure shot for anybody in need of an espresso stout fix, and a really good one at that.

It pours black with a 2 finger head of tannish foam. I get roasted malt, milk chocolate, and some coffee. Very roasty to my palate, coffee grounds are strongish, dark chocolate bitterness, hops bring a hint of fruit. Nice. Nice body and mouth feel. This is very good and not over the top with the abv. Geez, look at that lacing!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle from 2009 into a snifter.

Appearance is deep brown nearly black body with a huge mocha colored head that reduces slowly and leaves thick lacing. Looks beautiful.
Smell is heavy coffee, chocolate covered espresso beans, toffee and pale malt. Not overly aromatic.
Taste redeems the aroma with huge espresso, dark chocolate, roast coffee, big chocolate and deep roasted coffee aftertaste. Very tasty and charred coffee forward.
Mouthfeel is light carbonation and medium body, but very easy to drink.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much taste and espresso flavor this beer expressed. One of the best coffee + espresso forward beers I've tried .
