It looks dark with a small head that disappeared quickly. You could smell the coffee in it. But the taste wasn't what I was hoping for.

330ml bottle served into a tulip glass

Look: Dark - pours a deep, deep brown with a couple of fingers of tan/khaki head with considerable staying power. Some lacing left behind. Head diminishes fairly quickly to a thin, tan-coloured foam cap.

Smell: Again, dark - dark roasted malts, dark roasted coffee and deep, dark chocolate. The smell puts me in mind of a really good 90% cacao chocolate. Overall, a mighty fine combination of coffee and imperial stout characteristics. This could be a good one ...

Taste: Oh dear God, this is delicious - I've had a number of coffee/espresso stouts of late and up until now Bad Seed Espresso Stout was pretty much the high water mark. That has just changed - this is an absolutely delicious melange of roasted malts, dark chocolate and coffee flavours with just the right amount of alcoholic burn. Absolutely divine.

Feel: Quite dry, although that's not entirely surprising given the flavour profile. About par for the course as far as stouts are concerned although a bit heavy compared to, say, your typical IPA.

Overall: Well now, this was a surprise - there's more to Japan than sushi, Kirin Ichiban and weapons-grade weirdness. This Japanese take on an Imperial Stout puts me in mind of my first thoughts on Japanese whisky - you think it's going to be a pale imitation of the 'real thing' but in reality it ends up knocking your socks off. Absolutely stunning - I think there's a new favourite in town.

No label information. Espresso Stout is brewed in the style of an American Imperial Stout with coffee beans added. Available as a rotating release in single 12 oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a snifter glass. Served above 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp frothy foam head of a mocha-tan color over a near black body. Retention is above average and lacing is light and patchy. 3.5

(Smell) Aromas of earthy, acidic coffee beans up front with secondary imperial stout characters of medium roasted barley, licorice, molasses and dark fruit notes. Reserved sweetness aromatically. Potency is medium/high. 4

(Taste) The stout flavors are very forward with moderate roasted malt, toasted caramel syrup, earthy licorice and a moderate creamy sweetness. The coffee beans are a touch more reserved in the flavor, with lesser acidity as well as earthy bean character. Altogether enjoyable flavors all around, although slightly thinner in body than the aroma suggested. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) The texture is oily, mildly chewy and moderately dry. Carbonation is low, generating a mild frothiness and a delicate, soft crispness. Body is medium for the style, medium/heavy overall. Balance is nearly even earthy bitter to sweet. Alcohol presence is low and there are no notable off characters. 4

(Overall) Hitachino Nest may be one of the finest Japanese breweries when it comes to crafting traditional American and Belgian styles, and Espresso stout is another excellent addition to the lineup. Aside from the slight lightness of the body, this beer delivers on a solid stout malt profile, integrates the coffee bean for flavor as well as balance and manages high drinkability throughout it all. I wish this was available in bigger packaging, as one beer drives the craving for another. 3.75
