Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Pours a dark brown almost black hue with amber highlights. Has a thick, tan, 3-finger head that slowly dissipates leaving a nice trail down glass and ending in a persistent lace.

S: Strong coffee and malt aroma with an alcoholic background.

T: Dark rich ale that is a little more sweet than bitter. Has a solid coffee and malt background hints of hops.

M: Very strong and boozy. Medium body and medium carbonation

O: Delicious coffee stout. Huge coffee flavors and very boozy!

A: opaque, jet black, as it should be. The nice part is the reddish hue of the head, which yields a decent cap and leaves a sticky lace as it settles.

S: coffee aromas are subdued, too much so given what this is supposed to be. That said, smell of chocolate, candied sugar, and hints of vine fruit and booze, makes for a nice combo. Appetizing, but not what I was hoping for.

T: no mistaking the coffee here, though. Strong, earthy espresso flavor with chicory, smoke, and chocolatey sweetness. Nice.

M: solid. Bubbly enough to refresh, and quite creamy.

O: there's a spot in town that makes a New Orleans-style coffee, and the chicory notes I get here make this the beer version of that for me. Nothing's blowing my mind; just a strong interpretation of the style, which is what I expect from Kiuchi.

Pours deep dark reddish brown to black, but looks opaque black once it's in the glass. One-finger light brown head with moderate lacing.

This beer does smell like espresso as you would expect. Heavy roastiness with a coffee grounds aroma. Also some well-toasted bread aroma. None of the anise or licorice aroma you so often get in a big stout.

Taste and feels a bit like a cappucino. Very roasty! Very little hop bitterness. The sweetness and alcohol are balanced primarily by the espresso roast flavors. Milk chocolate flavor too. Earthiness could be hops, but it could be the coffee too. One interesting flavor is a grainy wheat or rice like flavor mixed in that I didn't expect. Not sure what to make of it. For me this flavor detracted a bit from the experience at first, but as I got to the end of the beer I started to see it as a flavor that distinguished this stout from others and I enjoyed it.

Creamy mouthfeel, like a cappucino. Pleasant roast aftertaste. The alcohol is fairly well hidden.

Interesting coffee stout that substitutes for actual coffee nicely for someone like me who no longer drinks coffee but loves coffee aroma and beer.

I poured this espresso stout into a glass stein.

Appearance- Body appears a very dark brown, with no notibeable highlights. The head is a dark, sappy brown that has a viscous, milky look to it. It builds to about a finger before thinning out, leaving barely enough substance to cover the top of the beer.

Smell- Uhh...I guess that has some coffee in there. It imitates a cold latte drink you would get packed with sugar. It also has a really strong chocolate note which is very surprising.

There is also something slightly off about this. Like a boozy smell is mixed in that is certainly not appetizing. Almost smells like vodka or a sake after it gets through the sugary latte and chocolate. Thankfully, that scent is really buried.

Taste- That iced mocha latte is the lead flavor. I think I would appreciate it much more if it smelled more like coffee than a sugary sweet mixed coffee drink.

The chocolate flavor has degraded a bit and is barely perceptible in the finish, and is already a shadow of what it once was on the nose, too bad.

There is also a slight grassy, wheaty expression picked up that may be the base of the off vodka smell from the nose. It still does the same thing here of making the end drink less enjoyable.

Mouth feel- This beer is relatively chewy and has a solid medium body. It also finishes rather easily despite that off flavor. Could be a little more smooth over the tongue, but otherwise good.

Overall- Hitachino Nest's espresso stout was an okay stout. The espresso had some disjointed flavors accompanying it that really affects the overall experience of the beer negatively. It needs more coffee and less whatever that off wheaty, grassy flavor is.

Oh, and if the espresso actually tasted more like espresso, that would certainly help matters. I cannot see myself ever returning to this one...
