This is the third beer I've picked up from this brewery. They have all been quality products and very enjoyable.

This Stout pours the usual color. It has a small but nice head. The aroma is subtle but just right. The taste similarly is what it should be. It is very reserved. The aftertaste is exceptional. It is coffee flavored but perfectly so.

I doubt that I would ever pick up any of these again, at least not for the price ($4.99).

720 ml bottle

Appearance- Pours a dark chocolate brown/black with two fingers of frothy mocha head.

Smell- Espresso beans, chocolate syrup, cocoa, vanilla.

Taste- Hit right away with strong espresso and coffee bean followed by bittersweet chocolate and cocoa nibs. Roasted flavours linger in the finish. Flavours lean to the bittersweet side of the spectrum.

Mouthfeel- Medium to full bodied with light carbonation.

Overall- A bold and flavourful espresso stout. Definitely delivers on the espresso side of things as I feel like I am getting hit with a jolt of caffeine (in a good way). Sticking with bittersweet flavours makes this stout an enjoyable and unique experience.

Black body capped with a thin tan head; decent lacing along the glass. Coffee, bitter chocolate and cocoa make up the bulk of the aroma. Rich, bittersweet chocolate flavor with a nice bitter undercurrent. Medium-heavy body, velvety smooth feel richly sweet texture.

A very well done stout, full of body and flavor. Rich and nicely complex. The espresso notes were immediately evident in the aroma and taste, yet the chocolate flavors soon came to be the dominant flavor. Lots of good stuff from this Japanese stout.

Poured from 330 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a very dark blackish-brown with 1/2 inch bubbly dark tan head. Good retention. Decent lacing.
S: Nice espresso note, dark sweet chocolate malt, and a hint of cream. Delectible.
T: Wow! The espresso note hits strong. Dark chocolate and hint of cream...follows aroma well, which is a great thing.
M: Light-medium body. Some bitter coffee and chocolate notes. Bitterness is well-balanced by a sweet and creamy feel.
D: One of the best coffee brews I've had. Quite the pleasant surprise from a Japanese brewery. Not complex...but what it does do, it does very well. Seek it out!

Pours straight black with a very thin khaki head. Nice looking beer, exactly what I want from my stout.

Smell is very nice. Tons of roasted coffee up front with some other dark malts behind it.

Taste is also very good. Very roasty up front with just enough bitterness to balance it out. Pretty straightforward in both aroma and taste, not terribly complex but what it does, it does well.

The mouthfeel on this is just about perfect for me. Slightly creamy, full but not filling.

Overall this beer exceeded my expectations, definitely worth picking up if you like coffee stouts.

Poured into a snifter. Nice creamy, bubbly head. Pitch black. Smell and taste of burnt coffee, slight hint of raisin. Maybe a bit too much bitterness for me, but still appealing. Very nice mouthfeel, rich, smooth. Overall, a very tasty and well-done stout. Good value.

Poured into a highball glass

A: Pitch black with a rich, dark gold head that settled at about 1-2mm. Decent lacing.

S: Lots of coffee with some chocolaty sweetness and soya sauce-esque scents.

T: Deep coffee notes with touches of chocolate and a slight maltiness. Slight touch of citrus can be detected. Aftertaste is mostly sweet and chocolaty with hints of citrus.

M: Decent to thick with slight carbonation.

O: A very nice stout. Very mellow and quite balanced without getting boring. Very comforting aftertaste. Definitely a beer I would have more of.

A black/brownish brew, a tan head, little lacing and small curtains.

Smelling coffee and chocolate, soy sauce and licorice.

Sweet brown bread, espresso and chocolate chip cookies.

Medium carbonation, soft, a big body, a smooth dry finish.

A really powerful after dinner stout.

Appearance: Oily, dark black-brown with a thick coffee-crema coloured head. Head lasts for a good amount of time, and leaves sticky lacing down the glass.

Aroma: A shot of coffee straight up, followed by some dark chocolate, vanilla, and burnt caramel.

Taste: The first thing that I could taste was a strong, almost creamy, bitterness that quickly dissipated into smooth burnt-caramel / brown-sugar and roasted malt. A very deep and complex palate, but without any of the usual lingering bitterness that espresso stouts often have. This is potentially the best espresso stout that I have tasted yet!

Mouthfeel: Creamy and balanced, with carbonation that matches the style well. Possibly slightly thinner than an Imperial Stout should be, but only if you are thinking about it.

Overall: This is probably the best espresso stout that I have tasted. Where most others leave a lingering sharpness or bitterness on the tongue, this one is very smooth and only traces of espresso remain after swallowing. Creamy and rich, like a good espresso should be, it is quite morish and is one that I will definitely repurchase and introduce to others.

11.2oz bottle poured into a Gulden Draak tulip glass.

Appearance- Black in color with a half finger of mocha head that dissipates into a small layer that leaves excellent multi layered sticky lacing.

Smell- Espresso, coffee and a bitter hop

Taste- Black coffee with a middle to backend bitter hop finish.

Mouthfeel- Full body that makes you feel like you are almost chewing.

Overall- This is great if you are a black coffee drinker. I personally would have liked a little bit more sweetness for balance.

Bottle into snifter. No visible date.

A- Oily, inky, opaque black pour. Finger width light tan head. Lacing is chunky in some spots.

S- There is no hiding the strong black coffee in this. There is some dark bitter chocolate, some cinnamon and a touch of vanilla. Very bitter, very little sweetness in the smell.

T- It starts off with a huge wallop of dark roasted coffee than opens up to dark chocolate and creamy milk chocolate. Brown sugar, vanilla and some cinnamon.

M- Medium body, low carbonation, slightly creamy.

Poured from a bottle into a tumbler pint, the beer is a very dark brown coloring with ruby highlights around the edges. A thin, filmy, frothy light brown colored head rests atop the surface. Aromas of bitter dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and some earthy qualities slowly engulf the nose. Very rich and dark smelling. Very inviting. Flavors are rich and darkly sweet on a smooth, creamy body. More chocolate and roast than anything else popping up on my tastebuds, which is kind of misleading given the name of the brew. The aftertaste is rich and roasty, and leans slightly towards bitter. Rich, slightly cloying and slick finish caps off a very tasty beer. As tasty as it was, if you are putting espresso in the title, people are going to expect a more coffee-centric palate. Other than that, it was a very solid stout.

Thanks to jtd1969 for this bottle.

A - pitch black with a soft brown head

S - roasted malts and coffee with a hint of green chillies (there was much conversation about whether we were going crazy or not)

T - roasted malts, coffee, a bit bitter, and green chillies again

M - smooth, well carbonated, medium bodied

This is a nice beer, but the odd pepper aroma and flavors was hard to wrap my head around. It wasn't bad, but it did seem out of place. I'm not sure I would seek this out given the cost per bottle, but I wouldn't turn it down if offered again.

Velvety dark brown color and almost opaque. Thin, tannish head with a few lingering patches and minimal lacing.
Nice roasty, nutty, coffee aroma. Fairly complex yet balanced and inviting.
Lots of malt in the flavor. Cooked corn, coffee, wheat toast, oak and almonds. Also a hint of maple sweetness. Very well balanced.
Smooth texture, solid medium body. Good carbonation.
Solid coffee stout. Not too strong but still complex. Plenty in here to keep my attention.

a deep brown/black pour with 2 fingers of tan head. head stayed throughout the whole glass and gave off excellent head. smells of tobacco, dark roasted coffee, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, sweet molasses. taste is a perfectly bitter sweet chocolate and coffee lover's dream come true. slight backdrop of grassy hops, but mainly roasted grain/coffee flavors and milk chocolate. a medium/full body stout.. thick with a chalky feeling, yet nicely carbonated and thin enough to go down smooth and easy. a great stout, well worth the price tag to at least try once.

A: Extremely dark walnut color with a tan/brown fluffy white head. The head was huge! Three inches at least. Retention is ok and there's some great lacing.

S: Interesting aroma. There's certainly an acidity in the beer, I assume from the coffee? I'll be damned if I don't also smell some pepper in here, but maybe I'm crazy. Definitely some coffee and rich roastiness. Some light chocolate, but actually surprisingly light in that. It's certainly an interesting aroma.

T: I'm definitely getting a lot of rich expresso/coffee bean. Maybe some cocoa as well. Absolutely roasted/smokey on the finish. The first thing I taste is coffee, which leads to a surprisingly thin malt flavor of light cocoa and some caramel. That's followed by some acidity and a rich smokiness that finishes the beer out.

M: A little too light for an Imp. Stout in my opinion. Almost a little watered down. Carbonation is good though.

O: This is a little light for my liking. Had they made this a little richer and fuller we would be having a much different conversation!

This is a re-review. The first one I had tasted of onions and I wrote it off but the one I'm having now is delicious.

A: Lucid black with espresso head, which ain't to bad.

S: Chocolate, bathwater hops, a sense of sweetness, roasted coffee beans. The last half of the glass reeks of fish food pellets.

T: Much better than the first one I had. Very chocolately indeed. Not sure where the espresso is though. Very accessible and drinkable for a strong stout, not like engine oil but also not watery. Loads of citrus in the aftertaste.

O: Delicious, and better cold! Of all the Japanese craft beer I've tried, Hitachino seem to be the ones that really know what they're doing. However, 8,900 Korean Won for a pissy 300ml bottle (£5, $7.8)... What the hell!

Poured into a shaker: Three fingers of glistening, souffle-like mocha head over black body with just a few little highlights around the edges. Head drops to one thick, lumpy finger & leaves substantial lacing.

Moderate, nutty coffee aroma, on the sweet side; grape juice; maybe a little musty, oxidized, but not unpleasant. Get an interesting whiff of corn chips after a while, hmm.

Little bit of fruity bite, with some plum skins, figs; roasted coffee & dark chocolate bitterness; hops bring up the rear & give some citrus bitterness, even a little wine-like. Long, dry, bitter aftertaste with little spurts of cocoa sweetness.

Medium-full-bodied, goes down pretty smoothly with a lot of residual feel.

Good, nothing terribly surprising: the espresso was noticeable & not overwhelming, some dark fruits, presumably from age & oxidation, but I don't think it hurt anything. Good stuff, I'd be down for it again.

12oz bottle 'born on' date is 10.11

Pours a black-looking dark brown with a 1-finger head that dissipates quickly. Smell is dark roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and and odd date-like sweetness. Mild, but pleasant. Taste is bitter and crisp at first, and ends with an oddly sweet dark coffee/espresso flavor. In between is deep, malty chocolate and toffee. Mouthfeel is decently creamy and no alcohol shows up. The bitter feeling is just right as well.

At $5 a bottle I can't afford to pick this up all the time, but I would if I could.

EDIT: had a two-year-old bottle recently and it was still excellent

A: Pours an opaque jet black in color. The beer has a two finger tall dark tan head that slowly reduces to a thin layer covering the entire surface of the beer with a thicker patch near the center of the beer and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant lacing is observed.

S: This beer has such a wonderful aroma that really makes me want to have it over and over again. There is a light presence of dark roasted malts and chocolate but the smell is dominated by the intense coffee/espresso notes.

T: Quite delicious with a good amount of complexity. There are light dark roasted malt notes upfront and then there are some milk chocolate flavors. After that the flavor is dominated by the intense coffee/espresso flavors. The beer is sweet but has some lingering light bitterness.

M: Full bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth and lightly dry in the finish.

O: I have been drinking this beer for about 7 years since I picked it up on a whim and still really enjoy it - and I will continue to pick this one up from time to time. This is a wonderfully delicious beer that is best served to be sipped slowly over the course of an hour or two - the flavors are too intense to have more than one of these at a sitting.

Bottle from Beer Deluxe. From notes.

A - Poured black with lot's of carbonation along the sides. Two fingers of khaki head on top. No lace and a film of retention.

S - Tons of coffee. Heavy on the coffee. Not much but burnt coffee.

T - Less coffee. Chocolate, roastiness. Less coffee than the aroma but still lot's there.

M - Good carbonation, full body, bitter coffee finish.

O/D - Couldn't have another. One dimensional for sure. A good effort for the coffee fiend. Too much for me, though I didn't particularly hate it.

12 oz bottle was poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: The beer poured a minimal mocha head. It is a pitch black color with some signs of carbonation at the top of the glass. There
is nice lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: super roasted coffee, mocha, and toasted and roasted malts too.

Taste: the espresso up front is not that bad at all. There are mocha and bready notes too. Bitterness from the coffee lingers for a bit also.

Mouthfeel: smooth, full bodied, medium carbonation, and easy to drink.

Overall: A nice mix on the stout style. Espresso beans added or the coffee itself was pulled off well. This was a hard find down in Brooklyn, but well worth it. Not sure about the bottle cost, but a good introduction into the breweries beers.

Pours rich dark chocolate brown, nearly black, in the oversized wine glass. There is surprisingly little head and no lacing to mention, however, each swirl deposits a film on the glass.

Equal parts strong espresso, dark chocolate, and bourbon with cashews and amaretto in the background. Warmth allows the nuances to be amplified.

Black coffee dominates; however, some cigarette smoke invades. Bitterness carries throughout and into the lingering finish as baker’s chocolate.
This stout is full body with a smooth texture and prickly carbonation. Astringency is too high while alcohol is as expected.

Astringency and cigarette flavors hold this one back. Strong flavored foods such as beef or pungent cheese will help.
