Hitachino Nest Commemorative Ale 2011
11.2oz bottle served in a snifter 8%

Very nice orange/amber color...white head that disappeared pretty quickly.

Decent malt smell and faint spices (hint of licorice and some orange and I guess the other is coriander)...wouldn't hurt to have a little more but this is 2 years old.

Its a solid beer. I would purchase it again. Really nice malt character but not overboard. Little caramel with light spices. I bet if this were a newer vintage it would have more spice flavor to it but I was expecting a little more spice but i am very okay with the lighter spice flavor.

Mouth feel is good. Well balanced and no heat from the alcohol.

Over all I think its a solid ale. I have had quite a few better...but have had a ton alot worse.

Cheers

Pours a nice orange amber color with minimal head. Smell is very sweet and fresh. Taste is pretty good. One can taste the coriander and orange peel along with faint vanilla bean and nutmeg and cinnamon. Slight spiciness at the finish and the 8% AB hits you pretty good. A very good refreshing beer. Hitachino hits the nail on the head on delivering taste on this one.

Beutifully capturing the best of what the holiday season has to offer, Hitachino's Commemoration Ale gives a taste of bready and spiced desserts, a hint of citrus and the warmth of muddled spiced rum. Its culmination is quite suitable for present opening and feast eating.

As the ale opens, its rich honey-amber hue is copper, brown and red in all equal parts. A creamy and fluid head climbs from the ale and hugs the rim firmly with a hard clinging attitude as the ale recedes. Its a very convincing appearance!

Aromas of honey, caramel and something of a sorghum frames the beer's hearty-sweet upstart. Couple that with the spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and a hint of clove allows a distinctive "ginger snap" aroma to arise. Hints of citurs waft about and bring in a bring and zesty note heading into taste.

Its creamy-sweet flavors are pronounced with caramel, toffee and that bit of sorghum. Hearty in that the malts are a little over caramelized, a toasty and crusty taste accompanies the sweeter taste. But its middle is sprinkled with that cinnamon, nutmeg and citrus peel character for the spicy breadiness that reinforces the ginger-snap flavor that was detected in the nose. As the ale trails, the fleeing sweetness allows for a glimpse into the citrusy and spicy hops and moderate alcohol.

Creamy and lightly bready early on, the texture of gingerbread milkshakes seem to draw favorable comparisons. But as the ale slowly releases its carbonation, the spicier, drier and more resinous textures prevail. This leads to a warm and peppery finish that soothes the stomach, palate, and more so- the mind.

Without saying on the label exactly what "Commemorative Ale" is commemorating, the ale really tries hard to capture the taste of Christmas desserts with gingersnap cookies and they do that to perfection. If this is not their intent, then they are way off target.

A: This poured a nearly opaque copper with moderate light tan head.
S: It smelled like sweet biscuit and earthy toffee, with some copper hops and oak and vanilla and cinnamon.
T: It tasted like copper hops and earthy caramel and roasted barley, with some vanilla and cinnamon. It had a clean bittersweet and spiced aftertaste.
M: It was thick with moderate carbonation. Nice big body.
D: This was a nice winter warmer with delicate and complex scent and taste. Can't be too cold or you'll miss all the subtleties. The body was great, and the finish was smooth. Well hidden alcohol too, so it was easy to drink. Would be really interesting to age, but still nice fresh. Solid brew.
