Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Francepants06 on 01-20-2012

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

On 11th March 2011, a huge earthquake struck Japan and with it our brewery. Some parts of the brew house were damaged, and the brewing tanks were left leaning at an angle. Completion of the typical mashing period had to be extended to three days until electricity to the brewery was restored. Natural fermentation had already started in the mash tank during these three days with a lactic acid cultured in our brewery. This "3 Days" beer is limited to only 8,000 bottles.

Interesting beer, thanks to rudzud.

Light fizzy head, murky auburn reddish color.

Nose is weird, lots of cherry like sour fruit, sour lacto and phenolic aromas, little green apple sweet candy malts caramel like with plenty of golden raisin and little fig, molasses.

Taste is more sweet and sour, sweet malts, brown sugar like, with more mild phenols, some esters, plenty of dark fruits, fig, raisin, little apple, nice spices like a cinnamon raisin thing, nutty spice. Mild sour lacto thing, with faint sour cherry, etc. Finish sticky and syrupy, more sour lacto and dark fruits, cherry, etc.

Mouth is med bod, light syrupy, decent carb.

Overall decent.

Pours a muddy, cloudy brown color. Little head and no lace. Aroma of barley malt and musty sweet lemon. In the taste, brown sugar like caramelization, burnt toast, and small acidity. Sweet, caramelized wheat with a warming alcohol glow. Full bodied, smooth and rich. Drinks easily, an amazing beer. This beer was fermenting when Japan suffered the severe flooding from an earthquake that hit Japan in 2011, fermenting an additional 3 days and gaining strength and complexity.

Pours out a rich amber with a thin head. Smell is malty, caramel, a little oxidized (in a good way), nutty and bready. Flavor is caramel, bread, pear, cherry, mild hops in the finish. Finishes pretty dry. Reminds me of a really good amber biere de garde. Light acidity on the tongue. Carbonation pops and works with the light acid. Fairly light bodies, considering the rich taste. Overall this is a really solid, rare offering, and a little bit of history.

A - Pours with one finger of off white foam on top of a somewhat hazy, amber-brown body. The head fades quickly and leaves little lace on the glass.

S - Bready malt, red apple, and a bit of caramel and cinnamon.

T - Rich, toffee malt and licorice up front. Some red apple in the middle with caramel and more licorice in the finish.

M - Medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a slightly sweet finish.

D - Very interesting, this is not at all what I expected. I don't get the tartness I though would be here, but there is definitely some funk. Overall, it comes off something like an English Old ale of winter warmer with spices and complex fruity and toffee flavors.

Big thanks to newbrewbb for sharing this. Served in a tulip taster. Pours a beautiful amber hue with a translucent clarity and a dense, 3/4 inch, cream-colored head. Nose is a bit muddled - citrusy, grassy, fermented grains, some sweet notes and tart cherries. The flavor profile has a lot going on and makes it difficult to really nail down everything - sweet, tart, peppery, grassy and malty/caramely. Mouthfeel is medium-light in body with an even, lively carbonation, some astringency and a slightly oily texture. I can't really rate this to style because this beer tastes nothing like any witbier I've ever had. That said, a pretty interesting experiment due to happenstance. Not something I would seek out, but it might be interesting to see how it continues to develop with time.

Thanks to queens1130 for sharing this one at drewone's place.

Bottled 11/2011.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is sour and tart with some fruity and honey aromas. Taste is much the same with a tart apple and sake-like flavor on the finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with an interesting story behind it.

With this lactic acid, I thought it would be more of a wild ale, and why not. A constant lactic sourness that grows on me. In fact, nicely drinkable, also a little woody (I would like more of that) and a little spice (I would like more of that). Drunk fairly soon after arriving in the U.S. Premiere Gourmet.

This beer poured out as a reddish colored brew, definitely not something a Witbier typically looks like. The head was white with a good retention to and a light lacing. The smell of the beer is unique, I was picking up some kind of cinnamon notes in there as well as the sweet malts and maybe a few other subtle herbal notes. The taste was on the sweeter side, It has some light spice there as well with a dry finish to it. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, very smooth and gently carbonated. Overall it was a really good brew, probably one of my favorites from this brewery so far. I felt this was more like a Winter Warmer than a Wit though. I would drink this beer again if the price was right. It was pretty pricey for what you get I think but still worth a try at least once.

I got this beer from my buddy Leon, Basica, when he was in Holland a few weeks ago. Thanks for this bottle Leon. This is my first Japanse beer i guess!

Poured in my Struise glass this beer looks good but it is strange for a witbeer. Fluid like cloudy tea and a lightbrown head with some lacing after a while. No carbonation visible.

Good smell of some koriander. Taste is dito. This is a good brew for a sundayafternoon. Not very much carbonation in the mouth. Thanks again Leon!

Finally broke this out of the beer fridge. Poured into Allagash Coolship glass. Nice head, fades fast. Nice amber hue, not what I expecte from a so called "witbier". Not too sure that label is correct. Drinks like a sweet dubbel of some sort. Lots of caramel and candied sugars flavors. May be just a bit too sweet for my liking, but in no ways a bad beer. Glad I was able to snag a bottle of someone making the best of a shitty situation.

Appearance is reddish-amber. Pours with a nice head. Little lacing left on the glass but 20 minutes later some head lingers on the edge of the beer around the glass. Carbonation is finer bubbles and results in a creamy texture. Smells of blood orange or tangerine and alcohol is present. Taste is a strong candy flavor. Mis-classified and the result is closer to a Belgian style.

Bottle opened on 8.10.12.

A - Pours a dark cloudy orange with a thin light tan head that never really fades.

S - Sweet candy, toast.

T - Sweet carmely, bready-toast, some metallic tastes as well.

D - Decent carbonation with a medium body.

O - Sweet, some metal flavors. Did I just drink a radioactive beer? We will see.

Pours a dark copper color with golden orange edges and a two finger yellowish-beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lace left behind.

Earthy, musty aroma with sweet malts, lactic funk and vinous dark fruit. Smells like a BSDA/barley wine hybrid and nothing about it resembles a witbier. Some grassy hops along with hints of leather, caramel and toffee followed by grape, raisin and dark berries.

Medium bodied with tight carbonation and a very odd combination of flavors. Tart and vinous with some lactic funk, sweet makes, zesty spice and vinous fruit. Faint acetic solvent character butnit doesn't affect th flavor too much. Slightly earthy, leathery with hints of caramel and toffee as well as some peppery spice, raisin, grape, fig and other dark fruits. Slightly medicinal with a lingering syrupy finish but it's still decently drinkable. Very strange tasting beer.

550ml bottle into a Hoegaarden glass.

Appearance: Clear amber color threw me off, was expecting this to be a lot lighter in color. One finger beige head that just never seems to go away. Spotty lacing here and there.

Aroma: Interesting brown sugar, caramel malt. Notes of fruit and
ome musty basement funk.

Taste: Sweet caramel malt. More brown sugar. Yeasty slight spice. Basement funky flavors. Hints of fruits, white grape comes to mind. Definitely some complex and interesting flavors going on here.

Mouthfeel: Medium body and soft, easy carbonation. Somewhat mouth-caoting. Lingering funky lactic thing going on here. Not really what I would expect from a "witbier" More like a dark Belgian strong.

Big thanks goes out to the GBX Crew (beeruser & funkydelic) for sharing this one during a recent tasting! Served from bottle into a Boulevard tulip. Poured yellow-orange with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, nutty, nutmeg, subtle smoke, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, subtle smoke, and nutmeg. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. If I’m honest, not a lot stood out on this one as far as the style goes. However, I did like the smoky note I picked up on in the flavor as it added another nice tone to the brew. I really just wish it would have brought a little more to the table. Worth your time trying it if you get the chance.

Poured into a large tulip glass a medium amber/brown with a nicely formed one finger slightly off white head.Spiced yeasty phenols and vanilla dipped roasted pears really stand out in the nose, note's of brown sugar come into play as well.I really like the play of roasted pears and yeasty spice on the palate, normally not a fan of phenols but it works here, slightly medicinal with the lactic flavors really mild in the finish, the alcohol provides a little zip as it warms. This is a pretty damn good beer,it's different and a nice change of pace.

Poured from a tall slim bottle that I'm guessing is a 22oz? No real indication. Awesome concept...

A harsh pour shows a amber gold body with little beading other than what is forced from the etching. Healthy, slightly off white head that leaves a good trail.

Grapes, wheat, some kinda weirdness... something spicy. I'm struggling to pin this one down.

Maltier than I had expected... great light grain presence, some grape bits, very mellow and approachable. Nice beer.

The pour is almost copper in color with a white head (maybe a little off-white). A really interesting aroma. Strong banana with a fair amount of spices to it as well. Lots of sweet bread and maybe a light ester quality (apple?). The flavor does have a light tartness to it, but it’s really just more of a typical Belgian style flavor. Banana and spices are prominent, as is the bread and maybe some yeast flavor, too.

Hitachino Nest 3 Days

Appearance: cloudy caramel, medium head, and a little lacing.

Smell: yeasty pear and other fruits.

Taste: yeast, wheat, and a faint citrus sweetness.

Mouthfeel: medium and smooth.

This is a good accidental brew. It has almost a milky texture while being smooth. It is very interesting.

A: Pours a hazy caramel to dark amber in color. The beer has a half finger tall creamy tan head that reduces to a thick film, a thicker patch, and an even thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant lacing is observed.

S: Slightly sweet smelling with hints of citrus and coriander. Malty with light amounts of dark fruit.

T: Light notes of citrus, some spices, and just a hint of sourness. The beer has a solid malt body with some sweetness including a light presence of dark fruits. Additionally there are hints of banana (esters) and some light caramel notes along with wheat.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Creamy but it also really coats the inside of your mouth + tongue.

O: This beer is extremely unique in style, likely due to the story behind why/how it was made - this is an interesting result to the experiment forced upon the brewery. I enjoyed this beer quite a bit and would recommend others to try it. There is a slight presence of alcohol in this beer.

A: The beer is dark hazy amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter-finger high off white head that has good retention properties and consistently left a thin head covering the surface.
S: The smell is somewhat malty and has notes of citrus and hints of spices.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and is a bit sour with complex flavors of dark fruits, orange citrus, spices and wheat.
M: It feels a medium-bodied and a bit tart on the palate and coats your mouth. There is a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an unusual variation of the Nest Beer that is quite malty for the style and has some interesting bits of sourness. The alcohol is very well hidden.

Disaster beer, pretty good actually. Beer is amber / red and clear with a nice white head, some lacing, decent retention.

Aroma is interesting, mostly lactic and some malt.

Beer is pretty tart and sour, it is very lactic and succinic. It is nice and odd at the same time, definitely a happy accident. I do enjoy it and might even have it again. The sourness wins overall.

Sample: 1 bottle 2011

A: Reddish orange in color, moderate internal carbonation, pours decent lacing, only the slightest bit cloudy

S: Quite fragrant, dried fruit, some lemon zest and coriander, nice citrus, some herbal elements, touch of alcohol, very pleasant

T: Very flavorful, identical to the nose, fruity, heavy citrus, coriander, herbal notes, some mint, light alcohol to finish, nice balance

M: Incredibly smooth, very refreshing, light fruit/citrus aftertaste, not drying or overpowering

O: A unique and delicious wit, smooth, fragrant, and flavorful; great marketing but with the beer to back it up

A: 3 finger frothy head with decent retention for its size on a murky amber body.

S: nice malt profile with some fruitness and even an herbal and corriander note.

T: caramel malts up front transitions to a dark fruit, spicey flavor with a tart, funky finish. Relatively yeasty throughout.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: Interesting story and beer. The lingering funky aftertaste is its greatest shortcoming otherwise its almost like a very malty belgian dark strong. A must try.

Pours a very nice clear bronze, beautiful color. The head is very thin but lingers for a while.

Smells like a good dunkel weisse with the addition of a tart nose.

The taste is light and very much like a sour wheat beer. There is a bit of banana yeast flavor, a touch of sour, and some light or faded hop character.

Mouth feel is very smooth, it feels like a cask ale. Slight tingle and a pillowey texture.
